  • The Metroliner was built in 1969 by the Budd Company at Red Lion for the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) service between New York Pennsylvania Station and Washington DC Union Station. 61 cars were build by the Budd Company of Philadelphia and came in pairs numbered 800-830, 850-869, and 880-889. The cars were built for 150 mph. The Metroliner service was pass down from PRR to Penn Central in 1969, then to Amtrak in 1971. Metroliner service was served by hauled locomotives in 1990 due to the age and the low reliability of the Metroliners. Some of the trains still see service today on Amtrak. All but one were reconfigured into cab control cars, with the removal of traction motors and pantographs. The Metroliner service was discontinued on October 29th, 2006 and was replaced by the Acela Express. This is the only Metroliner in existence in its original form.

I hope that this will be restored fully. The "Metros", in spite of their problems, were popular back on the day.

They were great looking cars and way ahead of their time in styling 50 years ago.

I totally agree on the styling, definitely ahead of its time and it still looks modern till this day...but then again that could be because the Metroliner lives on in the 500+ Amfleet I and II cars that still are in daily service as well as the few former Metroliner cab cars still in service.

I compared my new WalthersProto HO scale 85' Budd Metroliner EMUs to the PRR 860 prototype in the video, and I am really impressed. Walthers got the body proportions correct and the underbody detail is right on. The detail on the HO scale models looks accurate. Walthers really did a great job getting their models to look realistic like the PRR/Penn Central/Amtrak Metroliner prototypes. They've really nailed it!

I wonder if the R&N can acquire 860 and Lehigh Valley Budd 40?

Weren't the PRR Keystone trainsets kind of a similar design? I know they had a tubular design, but I don't know if its a similar design.
