That first train had to be close to 140 or so! The tradition of speeding to make up time was still very much alive in the 70s, and on Metroliner that could mean as high as 160-165mph (!) as the trains were never physically restricted to max out at their 125mph timetable speed. Kinda nuts, especially over the few grade crossings still on the corridor at the time like this one.

The few crossings on the Acela are only 90 or so.

Several trips peaking over engineer's shoulder never saw egregious speeding. A few mph, tops. GG1 hauled trains were another story - often into the 90s when only allowed 80.

It seems to me like four cars pass in two second, each car is 85 feet long, so its speed is about 170 feet a second, which is 115 MPH.

And on the topic of speeding the speeds are usually ⅓(or pushed up to ½ as to why the limits are given for a reason) of the absolute limit so its gonna feel rough but not immidiate death , tho that still is putting passangers at risk , although the timetable was loose enough no not warrent it anyways

@@kevinwong6588 those grade crossings are between New Haven and Boston, which was not electrified until Amtrak obtained the Acela trainsets. The crossings in this video are on the NYC-DC segment of the NEC, mostly in Maryland, which has since been replaced with bridges (especially when Amtrak switched from the Metroliner electric m.u. coaches to the AEM-7-hauled Amfleet coaches that finally allowed the 125 mph timetable speeds).

Tbh when one doesnt have to carry fuel its possible to just not give a single damn about earodynamics and go 160mph , except if theres a rustbucket called MP54 then that ragile thing will loose its windows at that speed

@@True_NOON by that time, SEPTA was taking the first deliveries for the Penn Central (and the Reading Railroad) of the Silverliner IV electric m.u. coaches; NJ Transit doing the same for Penn Central with the similar Arrow II cars. The GE-built cars would allow the Penn Central to finally retire the old "Red Rattlers" (as the m.p.54u cars were called) and not be worried about windows being blown out by fast-moving Metroliner trains (both the original electric m.u. trains and the later AEM-7-hauled Amfleet sets).

What I wouldn't give to find one Museum metroliner and refurbish it to operating condition. And return it to service back on the Northeast Corridor

I remember my dad took me on an Amtrak Metroliner back in 73 or 74 from Philly to DC. Al I remember was some trains had the Amtrak Phase I scheme, and the others still had the silver with red pinstripe Pennsy colors. I distinctly remember the green-tinted windows.

I've seen plenty of trains at 125 mph through Princeton Junction over the years, and more recently 150 mph Acelas. That Metroliner is doing way over 125 if this film is showing actual speed! If my stopwatch calculation is right, it passed in about 1.53 seconds. 4 85 ft coaches = 340 ft / 1.53 s = 222 ft/sec *3600/5280 = 151 mph
