We heard the Protomolecule speak of "the Work" when Miller was with Julie. The scientist Cortazar said, "It's building something." The scientist Strickland had created hybrids from normal humans (probably children) before, but this was the first hybrid created from the children with that the immune disease. Strickland has said that the immune disease should give the human source beings more control; that's what we're seeing here.
Souther's error was that he was still expecting some measure of honor from a fellow admiral. It hurt my feelings when he got killed.

Watching an IRL navy man react to this was a particular kind of joy 👍 I knew you'd get all the little details so many miss in this episode, and the overwhelming stakes that are involved!
Glad you guys are back. Not sure if your question was answered about the hybrids. Katoa was the first hybrid with genetic deficiency they made. The first generation which are in the pods didn’t have the deficiency which is why they had the bomb in the chest to destroy them if they went rogue. Also, show time wise I don’t think the work was being done when the first generation of hybrids were being made so there would have be nothing to talk to them about if they could talk.

Non spoiler point about the protomolecule, it communicates with itself, not just through space, but also time. Think back to when Miller met Julie, she said "can't stop the work," and when he said that he was set to find her she said "kidnap job," mirror what he said to his boss in the very first episode.
