This album is 1993.. They were listening to Zappa, Mahavishnu Orchestra, everything Chick Corea and etc. Sean R is unbelievable on this and Sean M's fretless bass is Bliss.. RIP Sean's❤️🙏
So many bands today have so much to owe to Cynic, I mean they are incredibly influential and criminally underrated. Not only are they ahead of there time with music but they don’t have one bad album every album to me is a masterpiece and they are amazing live they should be headlining tours and festivals. Also RIP master Sean Reinert
Thank you soooo much. Can't view it yet, but to anyone who's wondering why i wanted this specific song over some of the other classics like stuff from Deaths Human album or other cynic songs like evolutionary sleeper... Veil of maya was a song that personally reached me on another level. It was so funky and experimental, as well as catchy. Anyone into the scene knows Sean was a beast, but i just think for a prog fan without going too deep this really showed a lot of ambition. Thanks again!
Try Atheist, they were first active in the late 80's, slightly earlier than CYNIC. More thrashy sounding, but in a similar vein. Something from their second album Unquestionable Presence would be good.
Unquestionable Presence was a freaking masterpiece. That whole early 90s era of death/technical/prog metal was amazing. So many bands doing interesting experimental stuff around then (Death, Carcass, Cynic, Atheist, Pestilence, others).
Definitely a case of being ahead of their time...my buddy, Jason, and I couldn't understand (seemingly) everyone's reluctance to embrace Focus as a masterpiece of interwoven musical tapestries...the 3 sisters of fate, themselves, were surely envious 🤘
To think they were basically teens when they wrote that stuff. Legends. Im so sad every time i think of Sean. My favorite band of all time but i cant bare to listen to them now because i get sad.
Love this album. It's from 1993, not 1990, but still very early and extremely influential. I wouldn't say no one was doing progressive death metal at the time, but other bands weren't as influential. For example, check out Pan.Thy.Monium's (featuring the brilliant Dan Swanö) album Dawn of Dreams from 1992. Extremely proggy and experimental death metal. Track 1 (they're all untitled) is a 21 minute masterpiece: ua-cam.com/video/cIClnH7hM_k/v-deo.html If Track 1 is a bit too long, Track 6 is also very good (the whole album is): ua-cam.com/video/XbCALfoAnIA/v-deo.html Definitely among the proggiest metal that existed at the time, but not at all influential as they're criminally unknown underappreciated.

They were nine years ahead actually. Calculating Infinity came out in 1999.

I had always heard that they were very influential. But, after hearing this, I had no idea how ahead of the game they were. R.I.P. Sean!
