Pakistan's Powerful MILGEM Corvette - The Babur Class

  • The Babur class is a serious attempt at designing a multi-purpose corvette. Because of its large size for a corvette, it actually has the space to accommodate a lot of different equipment, to perform a wide range of missions. Most corvettes are not really able to do air defence, apart from self-defence. The Babur class though is designed for area air defence at medium range, using its SAM missile carried in 16 VLS cells and its capable air defence computer. It also packs a punch in anti-surface warfare, with 6 anti-ship cruise missiles.
    The PNS Babur embodies the emerging trend in corvette design, towards a larger hull that is capable of accommodating more equipment, and allowing for more a greater range of combat capabilities, especially in air defence. We will know more about the Babur class as they are steadily delivered to the Pakistan Navy, which is due to be completed by 2025.

    The Babur in my opinion should be reclassified as a frigate because Pakistan’s type 21 frigates are 3,759 tons, but for some reason Pakistan classify them as destroyers

    • @EurasiaNaval
      @EurasiaNaval  2 роки тому +7

      The issue I see with that is the Pakistan Navy wants to classify the MILGEM frigates under development as Jinnah frigates. It would be strange to classify the Babur, the MILGEM corvette (Ada class) as a frigate in that case.

    Truly a multirole corvette. Gökdeniz CIWS shoots slower than most other CIWS but able to use airburst ammo and got long range. I would like to see it in action since it also got rizz 😎
    Coolest looking CIWS imo.

    I did a bit of research on this boat, and man. For what it packs, and where exactly sub systems are sourced from especially how many components will have transfer of technology and diversity of partners, this thing is pretty important. Although the base line tech is great for today's needs relatively speaking in terms of regional context, it's not space age like Burke F3 or Type-055/Type-54AP.
    Saw a picture of another Babur class "PNS Badr" under construction at Karachi, I think it's a pretty big leap. There's also a smaller PNS Haibat launched a few weeks ago, I'd like to see your take on it, even if it's a reply to this comment. It's not particularly spectacular, but pretty important milestone.

      Interesting comment. This is one of my earlier vids so the quality isn't too great.
      Anyway, I think the Babur class is quite heavily armed for a corvette, especially for air defence, although as you point out still no substitute for a modern frigate or DDG.
      Tentatively, if Pakistan is able to finish building the last two ships of that class in the Karachi Shipyard without major issues, including fitting it out (launching is just first step), it will show that its naval shipbuilding industry is up to the task of potentially building bigger ships in the future, e.g. the Jinnah class frigates. The Babur is no small ship for a corvette - 3,000 tons, the size of a small frigate, and armed as such. There might also be a overlap of transferrable skills for building the four Hangor class submarines that will be constructed in Karachi.
