  • We are investigating the Mogami-class frigate of the JMSDF, the warship that tells what is changing in the region. #Mogami #frigate #JMSDF
Why did Japan decide to have a frigate now?
What are the differences between the Mogami-class frigates and other modern counterparts?
Are the Mogami-class vessels, also known as the 30FFM-class, ready for duty?
What capabilities will these frigates gain in the future?

Welcome to our channel. All the weapon systems are like books, and they tell us their stories. The Weapon Detective investigates these books, reads between the lines, analyses them, and tells the untold. At the dawn of the Second Cold War, the fruits of new projects give us clues about the future. But current weapon systems also have their own stories. In our videos, you can find technical information, historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. While the Second Cold War is rising, Let's investigate the weapons together.

The need for FFMs for the Maritime Self-Defence Force is due to a shortage in the number of naval vessels. The reason lies in the rapidly increasing number of Chinese naval vessels. The situation is that old wooden minesweepers are chasing and monitoring the Chinese fleet.
The Maritime Self-Defence Force (MSDF) has no desire to fight a fleet war against the latest Chinese ship, Type 054A, by means of the FFM; the main purpose of the FFM is to rush anywhere in the Indo-Pacific region and bring its influence. It has a long range for a frigate, can berth in relatively small ports thanks to its side thrusters, and can handle any mission with just one ship.
It is unlikely that the MSDF seriously envisages anti-ship missile fire by naval vessels. Rather, anti-ship warfare has historically been the job of the submarine fleet, with the 22 modern submarines being the mainstay of the fleet.

Let me tell you the fact that Japanese people want to know about Japanese missiles as well.
The reason is that the Japanese Ministry of Defense does not publish any accurate figures on the range, which is an important aspect of the missile's performance.
In some cases, the range of the latest missiles is the same as that of missiles that are decades old. (Of course, this cannot be true.
This is not only because of the need to maintain classified information, but also because of the fear that Japan might possess an invasion capability reminiscent of the Imperial Japanese Army that prevailed in the postwar era.
Recently, the public's desire to have a deterrent to the expansion of China's military has gradually, but gradually, become less and less of a traditional political consideration.
However, the trend toward not disclosing much of the performance of sensitive weapons such as anti-ship missiles, or at least understating their performance, has continued.
The fact that Japan has not exported missiles is one of the reasons why it has not been willing to publish figures, as there is no need to advertise their performance.

This Mogami class ship may become the style of new Japanese destroyers in the future by inheriting the armament of the Akizuki, Asahi, and other destroyers and its own features of its stealth capabilities and minimal number of crew members. This ship is a frigate multipurpose/flagship (FFM) planned to commission 22 ships in service, and exported to Indonesian Navy in upcoming years. However, it lacks an anti-aircraft missile armament, (VLS only 16 cells ) which is a concern as a deterrent against the Chinese navy.

However, the JMSDF must consider a successor to the destroyer Murasame class in the each escort fleet. I believe that the Mogami class will replace the Abukuma and Asagiri class destroyers that are comissioned under the District Forces. In the process of creating a new destroyer to replace the Murasame class, I feel that the design of the Mogami class will be taken over and the equipment such as from the Asahi and Akizuki will be inherited as well. Although, this is my speculation so don't mind that much.

JMSDF's 8 Kongo/Maya destroyers along with USN's ill-fated Zumwalts should be called cruisers by their displacement alone, on top of their ability to act as command centers in flotilla operations. I mean, it’s a bit less of a worry there. They’re an island nation, and so the ground forces can take a back seat (relative to air and sea power). Definitely wouldn’t hurt to have it, but they have a budget, and if you can keep enemies from being able to sail over or parachute in, then it’s not as necessary to have that much investment in tanks or whatnot.

Japan has to decide what it's future naval strategy will be. A well armed frigate can be as effective and any destroyer and cost less to operate with todays modern missiles. I would consider a missile drone under it's own power that can be tethered to the frigate for missions designed to thwart the Chinese. Since the Japanese do not have to travel far to see the enemy since it's China, a drone under its own power with the missiles targeted and launched from Frigate instructions would be a formidable duo.
