I think Grace's death was the turning point where the show turns dark and depressing. Tommy could never recover, even the actor Cillina Murphy said so, in the last interview on S6.
It went from a crime drama to horror real quick in season 6 😂

The gangsters story is all in it's rise. When everything begins to fall apart - you see the same traits in the protagonists that the antagonists had.
Ruthlessness. Aggressive. Punishing. Threatening. Etc, etc.

If you are going to continue the PB content - maybe do an antagonist discussion?
You can highlight how in a way Tommy hasn't changed all that much himself - but his opponents have gone from small time & relatively thick - to grandmaster's with way more experience & knowledge than Tommy.
How the higher Tommy climbs - the more the people at the top resemble him, until he's up against a Facist - who's whole shtick is control.
What does that say about his struggle & decision to place control above all else? Is Moseley how someone like Michael views Thomas? Is that who Thomas actually is underneath? And if it is - have been watching a man destroys everything around him just because he could? Is that more inherently evil than even someone like Moseley?
The antagonists represent sides of Tommy more than they are actual characters.

Ideally the real ending & what you think will happen. Personally I don't see a scenario in which Tommy lives & it might be quite a brutal death.
Although, end of the day he's a monster.

A lot of the Family's death are due to them being careless or not listening. The one which is the closest to him was Ada's second husband and maybe Aunt Pol.
However Aunt Pol's was due to Finn being reckless with information

The way I kind of see it is that the tone of season 5 and 6 was already set up in the ending to season 4.
Season 4 ended with Tommys war trauma returning, and his attempts to cope through that ghost from his past. But the question is: what caused that trauma to come back?
I think the answer is that he's now got no more enemies to redirect his own trauma towards. 'Killing' Alfie was the last potential threat to his empire, and so he now has no vessel to redirect his insecurities towards.
As he stands at the end of S4, he has no more external enemies - but he's now left to confront his internal trauma instead.
Yeah, that is also a great point... his line in season 4: "there is no rest for me in this life, perhaps in the next". He always needs a new enemy and/or goal, thus with him becoming a politician etc.
@@PowerHubShorts Exactly! He needs an external enemy as a distraction. In a thematic sense, he's still fighting in the war and the fighting only stops for him in the season 6 finale.
The show's writer said that Tommy's biggest trauma is Grace's death. And that's why in S5 he hallucinates with her and not with the war.

I love Tommy and the Shelbys but in the End , they are still bad Guys and Tommy is the Main Villain in the Show. This is Reason, why PB getting more depressing.

I feel the problem with series 5 and 6 is that it was too big a shift.
We come from this high of finally beating Luca to an immediate change of camerawork, with a lot of anamorphic lens use, and seriously (at least for me) near nauseating colour correction and heavy ND filter use. There was colour correction before, but now half the scenes feel completely black, to the point where it actually starts to hurt my head to watch, and the other scenes just immediately feel like they shouldn't be that colour, even if it does serve the function of displaying the feeling of the series from now on, because those colours in those situations just don't occur in real life.
It had gone from the half dark, half fun gangster show to the typical BBC crime drama and it's filming style, and so it lost it's character.
If there was a slow introduction into the new show it became with series 5, it probably could have worked.
I like and respect your points, but for me personally, season 5 and 6 looks phenomenal... with season 5 being probably my second most favourite season. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts!!
Completely agree with this, I felt like the camerawork and sound effects in season 5 & 6 take away from the show. Seasons 1-4 were a lot more realistic feeling to me.
Only scene I ever cringed watching was when Tommy met Gina in Boston. There’s no way they shot multiple scenes with Gina acting like that. I was taken aback..she completely ruined that for me. It was insane..

After i complete the series, my opinion was that things should have ended at s4, s5 felt like making an unnecessary story with Mosley and just the seasons 5 and 6 were not as fun to watch as seasons 1-4
5 and 6 were not meant to be fun. It's meant to show viewers the price and consequences of leading a life like Tommy's. It was said in this video. I enjoyed both 5 and 6.

What's the main reason of grace death,
Her storyline had run its course. Prior to her death, all she ever did was nag Tommy about going legit and leaving the criminal world behind him. Obviously, that's not gonna happen and it will be very boring, so she had to go. A bullet is just an efficient way of accomplishing that.
After her death, tommy doubled down with his "I have no limitations" era. No delusions of being a quiet, law-abiding family man anymore either. It was all for the best
If you are wondering why she died, it's because John cut Angel Changretta (Luca's Brother) for dating Lizzie, and then Vincente ordered Tommy to be killed, but Grace accidentally got shit!

Drop in "quality" I wouldn't say is the right word, as season 5 and 6 arguably had the best production value of the whole series. It was just a lot darker than usual, focusing on different subject matters.
