The first stitch you've shown is often reffered to as a butt stitch (diagonal holes, edge to edge sewing). The actual box stitch is a bit different - it's shown on 3:15 - incorporates diagonal holes on one piece, and straight holes on other and edge to flesh side sewing.
Butt stitch is often used in shoemaking, when both details should stay flat (look for norwegian split toe shoes) and also while leather-covering something more or less symmetrical (flasks, gun stocks, tool handles)
Box stitch is primary used when leather-covering different box-type constructions (boxes, trunks, attache cases) and sometimes in production of large bags. In this case details should form a right angle
Quite a good video, by the way

whats the minimum leather thickness you would use for box stitching?

For me, definitely it has to be more than 1.3t. If the leather i use is soft, it should be at least 1.5t. I think it is good when it is 2.0t.

@@kkomedacolour If it is 2.0t, do you mark your stitch line 2mm away from edge?

Are you asking about the tool that i used to make stitch lines? That was a electric creaser. Thank you for watching my video!
