    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for writing :-) This mantra, like all Tibetan mantras has many meanings and also no one definite meaning. You can see some thoughts about it at wildmind.org In general, Tibetans think this mantra improves your wisdom. About the repetition, sorry, we don't exactly know. I was taught to say it this way when I was little and everyone does it that way. Some of us were taught that it can help against stuttering, but it also means more than that. Best to you!
