- For the last 2 years or so I have carried a Grayl Filter with me pretty much every day. I carry an EDC backpack from @TheHiddenWoodsmen and a Grayl Filter is always in the side pocket. When I travel, it comes with me as well. Grayl has 3 models to choose from, and today we will take a look mainly at the newest UltraPress and compare it to the other models.

Had all 3 as they each came out. Gave away the ultra light one as prefer the features and easier of use of the new variation. Settled on the newest version and have 3. Old Geos press I kept for emergencies,. Drunk out of rivers I have been swimming in with it. My friends seeing it have bought them mainly for travelling. One thing I would recomend is also purchase a millbank bag for a pre filter. It takes up hardly any room and prolongs the geo press filters in dirtier water.
Most people who get sick of waterborn diseases despite of used a waterfilter, didn't used it correctly. Clogged filter, faild filter and cross-contamination especially are the main results of user errors while using waterfilters.
I bought one about 6 months ago, it works great ! When I’m not using it for camping I keep it in my get home bag that goes with me wherever I go in my tractor trailer.
I’ve used the Geopress for years, in country and traveling abroad. Mexico is a regular trip for me, and I’ve never bought a bottle of water while there. I’ve filtered tap water and even water at one of the cenote I was diving at. Never been sick once. I use it all the time when mountain biking as well, and found an oversized bottle cage to strap it to the bike. It has never been damaged by getting rattled around on the bike. I replace the filter once a year, and always prefilter if the water is chunky.
Good to know! I'm considering buying one for my upcoming backpacking trip to Mexico 👍
I have used my GeoPress for about a year both at home and in the woods, I've replaced the filter once and have never been sick or had any problems with it, now I have to Titanium version and love it to, I also purchased Grayl's new Silicone 'One-Way Valve' which is a great addition, it makes it possible to add drink mix sticks into the opening but it doesn't go through the filter itself, the filtered water comes into its reservoir mixing with the drink mix then I simply shake it to combine the two, it also comes with its included lid for the tall titanium pot which I've placed directly into the fire to boil water for a freeze dried meal and of course I always use long handled titanium spoon because of its height, I highly recommend Grayl Water Filters to everyone and while 'pricy' the Titanium Grayl GeoPress is another great duo-purpose Grayl product.
the grayl is not just a filter but a purifier, the difference is that a purifier does everything a filter does, but more and gets rid of more viruses, protozoa, and bacteria.
Really like your unbiased comprehensive reviews. Keep them coming!
you give great unbiased reviews that i trust like you trust grayl products, keep up the great videos sir
Very helpful! Thanks 😊
Ernie, great review man. I keep an ultrapress in my truck at all times. I also have the original geopress that I carry when I want a higher capacity container. Most of my outdoor activities revolve around fishing so the ultrapress is just fine 99% of the time since I’m in the water and can refill it anytime. But overall, this is my go to filter and I’ve never had any problems either.
I have the original GeoPress and use it motorcycle camping. Really love it and trust the testing results. I wanted more than most of the smaller filters offered. Thanks for the review.
Good review , thanks for sharing , God bless !
I own a Geopress and I just love it! I used it in southern China with my two daughters. Combined with Vapur’s collapsible bottles, it’s a good solution if you wish to avoid buying too many plastic water bottles. I also use it for short hikes.
I bought 4 of them and had problems with very slow shipping. Even though not their fault customer service sent me some freebies. I keep new one in car and use another fairly often. I also use Sawyer water bottle/filter with good success. Thank you for another great video.
I've used the Grayl Geopress as my exclusive water filter since 2020 on all day hikes and backpack trips. It's reliable and gets the job done.
For multi-day hiking , I like a gravity system using CNOC bladders and HydroBlu Versa. But for all other uses, I love the Grayl Ti-Press
Ah man, I am loving my Titanium Ultrapress. I figured out I could pack the Soto Windmaster, with a sponge, igniter and tiny soap bottle in a stuff sack and slide it into the Grayl Ti. That and a can of gas and I am set. By the way, the reason for the Soto is because the Grayl pot is too narrow for the MSR PR. I previously had the 24oz and it was great as well, however I feel the Ti is a dream.
I love my Ti as well.
Good video. I’ve been considering on getting one, but I’m getting arthritis in both of my wrists, so I’m wondering how easy is it to push down on these filters
I carry my Geopress EVERYWHERE. It has forever changed my motorcycle trips and camping. I take it on vacations, airplanes, cruises, work, everywhere! The only time I do not take it is while on my bicycle - wont fit in the holder, and no, not changing that out. I go through plenty of filters during the year, but cheaper than buying bottled water on the go. I have gotten my dad one, and have talked to others who do a lot of camping and road trips and they have all swapped over the the Grayls.
Agree. I have the Grayl Ti and it stays in my backpack and goes edc or when traveling.
Hi. If people who are on months or years long road trips, would using the Grayl to filter jugs of of distilled water or crystal geyser spring water work well? Thank you.
@@sweetbeep You need to follow the guidelines - each filter is good for a certain amount of water. Carry extra filters. I use mine to fill on the side of the road or from gas station faucets so I am not buying bottled water all the time. Without looking it up, I believe they are good for 350 "presses."
@@ADVRaven ok thanks. What do you mean side of the road?
@@sweetbeep Like creeks or streams or in some areas that have wells or any other sketch water sources.
I love my geo press, never had an issue
Had mine for a few months but havent had a chance to use it yet. Ik it should be prefiltered with a cloth to save the filter from particulates and sediment but im extremely excited to put it to the test. Only negative reviews ive heard of is people sayith the filters dont last long before you cant even push them down but im going to chalk that up to user error. Even if i can get 3 gallons out of my geopress filter thats well worth it just in weight savings, ease of use, and the amount of filtration it has. The sawyer filter was runner up for me but it seemed like alot of hassle and time consuming without the quality of filtration
Great review! How would you rate the new Grayl Titanium? Please let us know!
My ONE bad experience with a Grayl was with my Ultralight, and I didn’t pre-filter some very sedimented water. I went from full-flow to no-flow in 2 presses. That was also me breaking my own rules - pre-filter into the CNOC with a bandanna, then through the Sawyer Squeeze for normal use. The Grayl is usually reserved for post-Sawyer water if there is a suspicion of viruses, pesticides, heavy metals, or some other concern.
Unless you use the s3 purifier the swayer do not remove heavy metals or pesticides!
@ Right. Which is why I use the Grayl when those are a possibility.
@@justjonoutdoors but the grail didn't remove those
@ You need to revisit your source(s) of information. Right on the main page of the Grayl site it lists heavy metals and viruses, as well as chemicals (phosphates, chlorine & chloroform), among other things.
@@justjonoutdoors Grayl cartridges are designed to remove low levels of chemicals and heavy metals but are NOT designed to protect against very high lead levels, mercury, high tannin concentration or water that contains toxic blue-green algae
I've had the ultralight for years now, it works great and I've never gotten sick from its filtered water.. I'm sad to see that Grayl has discontinued the filters for the Ultralight. I guess I'll need to upgrade to the Ultrapress, but I'm not stoked about having to throw away a perfectly good filtration system every time Grayl moves to a new model.
Filters for the Ultrapress will still fit onto the Ultralight
@@williamgarrison6060 That's wonderful news, thanks for that!
I'm wondering if the ultrapress cap will fit the ultralight, they appear to be the same size and even use the same filter. I don't have an ultrapress to try it, but I'd love to know for sure lol.
I like the grayl when traveling overseas. I left it with family when I left along with an extra filter
Always carry one whenever I travel for work or vacation overseas
Quality control is pretty bad unfortunately, first one I bought leaked badly. This was replaced, but the new bottle had a faulty filter! They replaced the filter and it’s worked fine. But just don’t expect much from the Ultrapress. Perhaps not as durable as past models. By the way really enjoying your videos 😊
I would get the grayl but here in the US most water is treated and not containing virus’. If I was going overseas to a country that I couldn’t trust the water sources, I may consider it. I use the hiker pro for backpacking, and it filters well, and is easy to use. For the water on trail, I am just looking to filter for giardia and other water bacteria or parasites. I considered the grayl a while back but it was a bit heavier.
pfas
@PaleoHikerMD ive been trying to figure out if the ultrapress lid would work on the ultralight, they seem to be about the same size and since they use the same filter maybe they used the same threads for the lid. 🤔
Biggest issue I had with this filter is speed, after only two litres of very clear (but potentially unsafe) water, the pressure resistance of the brand new filter when I pushed down became very high, so it went from 8-10 seconds to those 20 seconds plus essentially immediately. I suspect a defect, so I'll try get my hands on a new one from the company, but it was a little concerning performance wise if I were to rely on it
Can you use it in a car carry kit?
We have the large one we use in the RV as an extra level of filtering. The water tastes great after filtering through the Grayl, not so good just using the RV filter. One thing we don't like is if it isn't lined perfectly up is the unfiltered water will spray into your face when pushing in the filter. You just need to aline it perfectly and the problem is solved. Looking to the titanium one for backpacking as it is smaller and you have the option to boil in it.
Can I ask if you use the Grayl for all your drinking water and which water you obtain? I'm looking for something to purify water on the road as well, all day every day.
I'm thinking of buying jugs of distilled water and then the Grayl can remove some microplastics (and I can add minerals), or filtering the crystal geyser spring water in the plastic jugs.
Thank you.
@@sweetbeep We pretty much filter the water we drink unless we are boiling it for coffee. We prefilter the water from campgrounds with a hose filter then refilter it in the Grayl. It is a pain, but tastes great.
@@starlingblack814 ok thanks. I'm not familiar with a hose filter. What is that?
@@sweetbeep A hose filter ataches to the end of your RV fresh water hose so that the water from the campground is filtered, but we don't think it does such a good job, at least not as good as the Grayl, but it is ok for showering, etc. We travel a lot and not always so sure about the water source. I have to ask, is your channel "Sweet Beep" because of the hits you get on your metal detector? My wife and I also metal detect.
@@starlingblack814 thanks! And yes my channel is named sweet beep due to the metal detector beeping, lol! I don't have my detector with me right now, but I got it when I was all alone and in an extremely difficult spot in life. It helped me. I never found anything of financial value but it got me started on my UA-cam channel and met some cool people thru it. ☺️ Detectorists are usually cool people.
I wish you could still get the Sweetwater Guardian. MSR bought the design and now they no longer make. Best filter I’ve ever used.
No thoughts on the new Titanium version?
How do you think about the katadyne befree."
My only beef with my geopress is that as I’m depressing the inner canister with filter water squirts up and out from between the two.
Please do a review of the Grayl titanium water filter and the Grayl titanium stove!
Ultrapress in Titan ❤
Does it filter fluoride? Can’t find anything
The grayl works perfectly as a filter but the problem is the threads are too flimsy. They need to redesign the threads to be stronger.
What are you doing to strip out the threads hulk
Question. Let's say I buy one. Then use it for a day or weekend trip. How do I store it for the next use?
I have the Geopress and use it mostly for camping trips, then i just follow the instructions on the website. Grayl advises that u take it apart, clean the pieces and let it air dry for several days. I have owned the Geopress over a.year now and that process seems to work very well. Hope that helps!
My friends son used my geopress for his show and tell. He took a Mason jar with pond water in and another clean Mason jar to show the difference from before and after filtration
the grayl is overkill in my opinion. i have the original model and store it in my emergency box. for day-to-day use i prefer the katadyn befree. have you demo'd that one?
Berkie claims that their filter will filter the color out of colored water. Maybe you should try this with the Grayl.
Do you have any issues with water shooting up the sides as you press? I do, and I’m not sure how to avoid it or what the issue is.
Yes, it turned out to be a faulty filter. Purchase a replacement filter and you should be fine.
@@OutdoorsIQ Oh, that is good to know because I have several spares and can go ahead and change out the filter. Thanks!!
@@marrty777 Your welcome, let me know how you go :)
I discovered that what leaks is what remains at the bottom, what does not pass through the filter, take it out once more, drain the excess water and press again and it stops flowing
What about the titanium one
I just got one. Just used it once so far and it was 👍🏼. I like having the titanium cup as a bonus!
I want to like my geopress but so far the filters clog MUCH TOO QUICKLY and it becomes near unusable.
THANKS DOC...GREAT REVIEW👍👍👍👍👍ENJOY ARKANSAS🙏
I wished that bottle also worked without the filter for when you want to travel lighter and know you'll have access to drinkable water.
I can only take the top off, so I can't press the purifier into the cup.
Pull on the part you're unscrewing instead of unscrewing, loosen the small lid a little bit then grab the bottle with one hand on the top and one hand on the bottom then pull them apart. They should separate easily but not to easy there is some resistance, the initial separation should be pretty easy tho. I'm no expert or anything but I don't mind to help if I can and feel free to ask if you have any other questions!
I like the design of the new midsized unit but right now I see no use for it. I like a lot of water. I normally have either a 40oz or 32oz Hydroflask on my at all time so I am just going to stick to the orginal larger geopress for my water filter needs. Plus I like the pathfinder boiling cup and lid that you can get for it. With its size and design with the lid it's much more useful than the new titanium geo press.
the smallest bottle from grayl is
My favourite feature of Grayl bottles is when they squirt dirty water into your face as you push the core down. The pink eye it gives you is a nice bonus.
Sawyer filters are very much better at removing bacteria and protozoa; by several orders of magnitude.
Is the ease of use of a Grayl THAT much better than a Sawyer?
Grayl filter trace heavy elements. Sawyer does not. Sawyer squeeze is awesome and my go to for back country streams, but Grayl filters out more stuff like pesticides (due to included carbon) if you are around farm fields, et al. Both are great. Sawyer is lighter an smaller. Great for long mile days where pack weight matters. Grayl is better for shorter mile days in more urban environment.
Looks hard to press. Can women do this?
Easy❤ Titan Version gos easyer
For the gazillion people in other countrues...Can you list the volume in millilitres please? Inches is easy, ounces not so easy
if you can afford $$$ for a water filter
I'll stick with my $20 Sawyer
I have both. Grayl is better in urban environments or ag areas due to included carbon filter and smaller particle filtration.. Sawyer is better for high mile days when weight really matters when you are getting water from clean streams.. $$$ to avoid getting water born illness is cheaper than $$$$$ missing work. Where I go depends on which one I take. Sawyers are awesome and I use it the most when backpacking but it isn't the end all be all filter.
Argument "it works because X said it works" is simply ridiculous. So is analogy with crashing a car. You don't need to destroy anything to test water filter.
I didn't get sick is not a proof either. It's just your words. They may be true, which doesn't prove filter works exactly the way it's advertised.
Useless video. Why? There are no tests and there's no useful info. Everything said/shown could be taken from manufacturer website or from any of countless other similarly useless reviews.
Waste of money
Overpriced crap
