It's funny; I've seen them about 50 times. They've dones this maybe five times. Robin really has to work to hit these notes and he's said it's VERY hard for him to sing. I suspect that's why it's only selectively in the setlist. Possibly the best "power ballad" of the 80s.
Sorry, have to say I'll take Cheap Trick over Beatles any day (wot? heresy to some). Beatles, for all their great songs, and artistic breakthroughs for rock music can't hold a candle to Cheap Trick, Rolling Stones, and many other bands for that matter. I have to say a band's legacy should be equally judged by their endurance and touring, as much as their studio work.
@@ErikTJ86u did make very awesome points and I agree to a point. I'll just leave it like this in my humble opinion as a CT fan for life from 7 yrs old 1978 til 2023 52 yrs old. Only the E Street Band have lasted as long for me n that is hugely due to the Springsteen masterpiece 1980's double album The River which was huge on Pop n PowerPop for 1st time in 5 albums for Bruce and due in big part to CT and The Raspberries at the time who inspired him. Ok so yes I feel it's CT and The Beatles but not over The Beatles although ur points on the longevity and touring and live shows period makes a incredible difference and upper hand on CT. I believe the best RnR Band is the Stones live and pure RnR BUT The Beatles were the best Pop band basically invented the formula and CT is equal in being the U.S version. And took the Pop formula to new heights. Yes they can do it all blues folk RnR BUT they mastered the less than 4 mins mid to fast tempo heavy on chorus and hook ez on verse ear candy that never leaves u Bands r lucky for one Pop classic they have too many to count. I want you to want me probably the greatest American Pop song ever written then Surrender, Dream Police, Com On, Com On, She's Tight I mean they craft classics. Covergirl wasn't even a hit n it kills. If u want my love u got it. OMG I can't even keep up. WOW!! But lice wise n time put in they DO kill The Beatles. Thank u for ur time
So? This is a band known for their live music, and a musician known for playing 8 string, 10 string and being the first to play a 12 string, in fact in one interview Nielsen said Petersson invented it - thought he was kidding...check out him playing Within You Without You, captures the sound of the sitar
Well, Tom Petersson rarely used a twelve string bass in the studio. Jon Brant never used one in the studio and hated playing the instrument live. Tom mainly used it live so the band would not have to use another full time guitarist and Robin could concentrate on vocals/occasional rhythm guitar. There are only one or two songs on Cheap Trick albums where there is actually a 12 string bass.
The stuff Jon plays on this is really cool and creative! I once read an interview with Rick where he said what a difference it made to the music when Tom rejoined, and I remember thinking damn, I don't know if Tom's that much better than Jon as Rick says, look how he plays on "Tonight It's You"!
One more thing since you brought up "Gonna Raise Hell," according to the July/August 1994 issue of Bass Player magazine Tom Petersson revealed that he played an Alembic 8-string bass on the studio version of "Gonna Raise Hell."
A comment on dancinggypsee's comment, I've heard many recordings of live Cheap Trick, where Tom was playing a song that was recorded when Brant was in the band.
True. The main difference between Jon and Tom is that Jon was a much more traditional bass player who played fingerstyle and was uncomfortable playing with a pick and hated playing 12 string bass live. Tom is the opposite of this as you already know and yes, they are both great.
Kebo's Bass Guitars has this bass, consigned by Tom' for sale for ~15k if you are interested. You can find them online with full description of this bad boy. I wish I had the money :-)
i've got the "MUSIC FOR HANGOVERS" dvd, and it actually has a commentary track with the guys, and Tom is talking about how he just picked up that gibson bass
12-strings are hard to play, near impossible without a pick, if he didn't like pick playing I totally understand his dislike of them, I wouldn't want to play one of those damn things either!
this is not a damn power ballad...this is a power pop/rock song, like the Who, with some cool tempo changes. Why do people think everything they effing do is a power ballad? The Flame, now that is power ballad, that the band hated and label forced it on them. The Ballad Of TV Violence, even though the word, ballad is used and it is a powerful song...not a power ballad lol...I hate that term
Well, they must've learned to like it, the Flame that is, because its' a staple on their tour setlist. I wish the diehard fans could convince them that they don't HAVE to play all these tired 'hits' at every show (sorry, but I will not be upset if they do not play IWYTWM, ever again) and actually want to hear the many good songs from '97, Special One, Rockford, Bang,Zoom,Crazy,Hello, and the new one..ah not sure how they are doing with that on tour, but I love these guys but actually didn't go see them on their latest dates in my area. They don't need to apologize for their new material (when I say new I mean post-1981), it's mostly great, and I would hope that they would enjoy playing it. Cheap Trick does not need to be a retro-band relying on only their early hits, but I feel they are their own worst enemy, and are making that so.

Robin is the one of the few singers who sounds even better live than in studio.
My favorite Cheap Trick tune
One of mine too!
I wasn't too crazy about the whole '85-'95 period of CT, but this is a truly great song. One of Zander's best vocal performances
Robin God bless you. You have some pipes on you, man
good god what a great song ; and those high notes ? wtf robin ? makes it hell for some of us to cover
One of my favorite Cheap Trick songs. 😀
This NEEDS to be back in the set-list!
Coolest song!
Nice. I was at this show.
Masters of the pre-chorus & hook !
Awesome song. Thank You Two thumbs up one Greatest artist.
Bun E Carlos is the reason I got into drumming. Cheap Trick is the reason I got into Rock and Roll.
@@robertmills6772 Same! Except Rick got me into playing guitar.
I've always liked em. He sings sooo openly and strong. Greetings from Finland! The whole band gives me good space.
Saw them the very next day at Count Basie Theater, in Red Bank, NJ. They rocked this song, and the whole setlist.
I'm lucky, have seen them do this and 'Reach Out' in concert. This, along with Downed, are definitely my two favorites. Cheap Trick are the best!!
Why would somebody downvote this? Jeez
Top Ten Rock Lead Singer's Of All Time Mr.Robin Zander He's Voice Gets Better With Age 🤔😇Amen!👌
This NEEDS to be back in the set-list! TOO GOOD TO PASS UP! HEAR ME CT???
"TIMES NOT SLEEPIN, & TIME WONT LOSE--YOU CANT WIN, CAUSE TIME CANT LOSE"--"YAY, YAY, YAY, YAY, YAY"--good!!

My fav CT song!
This song is not easy to sing! Awesome performance!
how duz zander pull off these vocals year after year
Amazing!!! I thought this song would have been hard live!!! They prove time and time again why only second to the Beatles!!

if I were a rock and roll superhero, this is how I do it
The bass model's called a Thunderbird, and Tom plays 'em a lot (when he's not playing a 12-string).
This particular one is for sale. I was just checking it out on Gbase. It is consigned at a place calle Kebo's Bass Guitars. Wish I could afford it...
"all I need is someone to love and tonight you'll do!" I like that version better.
@hwgatw68 Yeah, me too! Tonight It's You was my first CT song. Still a fave.
Some day it will always be you M.D,M.
that B chord to D is great .........
