Great video Neal! I too have been using ponchos since the 70s and added tabs to one for the first time about 5 years ago. Really works well and fixes exactly the problem you point out. I also like that tabs can be put in places where grommet aren't for even more pitch options.

Great tip! I've been thinking the same for thirty years. It seems that if you have to use the poncho as a tent or tarp, you should have a tent like anchorage. It's just more stable and lasts much longer.👍🌟😁

I take e6000 or equal product and an artist brush and apply it around both sides of grommets as much as you like, let dry, then apply baby powder to take away tackiness. Also apply powder to waterproof coating side of tarp or tent flies, wipe off then store. This prevents tarp/tent fly from sticking during storage.👍

Great minds think alike!! I did something similar with my polish lavvu setup only I burned a whole thru the webbing and replaced the grommet so it goes thru the canvas and the webbing with webbing on the back. My cordage the pulls on the back webbing and goes thru the grommet. Works great!! Thanks for all of the great ideas on your channel!!

I think we sometimes forget the British forces mostly used bungees on the bashas so much of the stress is transferred to the elasticated bungee and not the tarp eyelet. It's only when we tie a taut piece of paracord with no give that we rip the eyelets out prematurely. 🤷🏻‍♂️🙄 I'm guilty of this too, so I've recently started using bungees. 👍🏼🙏🏼

Little toggles, can't go wrong with 'em.
I have carried a poncho and a basha because i might use the poncho as a ground sheet or just to sit me bum on. Or for when I need to go out in the rain for any reason. Including setting up or breaking down said basha. Neither weighs much. Plus if needed with a bit of thinking the poncho can be used to extend the basha or block one end if it's a but draughty or the wind changes direction.
Even a toggle through the eyelet helps as it doesn't just pull on the bottom of the eyelet all the time as your guy line just goes through the eyelet. More pressure is transferred to the material. Usually. And of course little wooden toggles are free...I likes free...

Well done, good idea, don't know why anyone still uses metal grommets. Years ago I used to take out the metal and sew a real grommet in, these days I sew in paracord loops.

.... I have the Dutch poncho, and I also have a mil-tec one. .... The mil-tec one is pretty decent, and if it was the only one I had with me, I would have every faith in it. ...... The Dutch one however, is outstanding. .... I normally carry both, but the Dutch one is definitely the one I favour most, not least for its extra width. .... I suspect you will say something similar in your next video about the Dutch/helicontex comparison! .... Top-tip btw. Might prolong the life of my favourite poncho!

I like the idea of a poncho, but have found that (because I’m a sweaty bloke) if I use one as rain gear I still get soaking wet because they aren’t breathable.

    Hi
Seen a lot of your tips. Some that I have tried have not worked for me. As the thread has not been strong enough. Could you tell me please what thread are you using and is your machine an industrial model.
    Thanks Neil
