In our last episode, we had Lanzhou noodles and it was delicious! This weekend, we added a new element to our show-we invited Mel (Kate’s sister) to a Hong Kong restaurant in Chinatown, Toronto, and experienced authentic Yum Cha! At this restaurant, dishes are pushed out in little carts, which is more traditional! Did Mel like Yum Cha? Join us on this food adventure!

I was in Toronto in the 70s and 80s. I studied there and worked there too. I left because I got a better job offer overseas and I never return to Toronto. You bring back all my memories of Toronto. Thank you. How I wish I could be young again and explore again.

Same with me, studied at the U of Waterloo back in the late 70s and left early in 80s. Paid lots of visit to Toronto for the Chinese food. Back then, I believe Toronto's Chinatown was more vibrant because it was the only game in town. Also, the Eaton Center was newly opened and it attracted lots of Torontonians into Chinatown as well. Now the Chinese have moved out to the suburbs and Chinese restaurants are all spread out throughout the city. Haven't been back to Toronto for many years even though I lived south of the border. Need to make a road trip to Canada one of these days.

@@tkam9 Thanks so much for sharing your experience and watching our video!! You're absolutely right, I think so much has changed around Toronto's Chinatown with many of the restaurants moving to the suburbs now. You'll have to come back to Canada sometime soon!! 😄

@@thexucrews Wow! This is awesome. I want to take a trip and visit my alma mater once COVID clear up. The campus and the town I am sure has grown and expanded over the years. Love the library and the campus center.
@@tkam9 There is constant construction going on around the campus!There is now Light Rail Transit along the train tracks and an autonomous shuttle bus around Ring Road.Plus they added a Nobel Prize winner in physics recently.

Cantonese is one of the many dialects in China. Especially used in Guangzhou and Hong Kong, and of course in many parts of Southeast Asia. “Thank you” should literally be “Mm Goy” and not “Mm Kai” which you had pronounced incorrectly.

It's understandable that he pronounces "Kai", rather then "Goy", likely due to his native tongue is Mandarin. "Gai" is Mandarin. "Goy" is Cantonese whereas "Kai" is in between. Nonetheless, kudos to Mengran to be tri-lingual (may be multi-dialects) and being humble. Your kids are so cute...
@@enjoygoodfood5673 There's no equivalent sound of “goy” in Mandarin, so I guess you're right. There's “gai” （该 ）and " kai" （开 ）in Pinyin but none whatsoever of “goy”.

Good to know that you are HKU alumni. My son goes to Western and our last stop was China Town in Toronto after we sent him to college on our way to New York. That was two years ago already. China town didn’t change at all. Seems like life is getting back to normal these days. Yes, the video was fun and interesting. Should do one on 茶餐廳。try 菠蘿油，乾炒牛河 as you must had all these during your days in Hong Kong and there are so many decent authentic 茶餐廰in Toronto.Thanks

當歸鳳爪也很好吃，有湯可以喝，榴槤吃幾口還可以，多了就想嘔吐的感覺，😂。香港這里酒店里的飲茶味道會好很多。比如帝京酒店，麗豪酒店。

@Mel, the durian puffs in dimsum has already been processed with other ingredients and sweetened. Unlike the fruit itself which can be quite challenging for caucasians. I would say Durians to Asian are like how Caucasians would view your cheese or Blue cheese 🤪 just like the many varieties of cheese, similarly many variety of durians too

Mel is brave. Chicken feet aka Phoenix paw is usually reserved for the adventurous eaters. The appearance can be intimidating for your first dim sum experience but may grow on you with time. Kudos for trying though.👍
There are some decent dim sum restaurants in Markham.
Durian is a polarizing fruit, either like or hate it. Most people cannot stomach the sulphurous stench. Excellent nutritional benefits with high healthy fat content.😊

it appears the toronto restaurant (at least the one you go to) has more varieties of dim sum than we have in edmonton. i tried the durian pastry here a few months ago and i really liked it. but my wife didn't and so can't order it anymore😢😢😢!!!. xen xen is absolutely adorable 😊😊😊👍👍👍. yes, you should include more of mel and your in-laws in your future videos. love from edmonton.

@@thexucrews I have tried chicken feet twice haha Once in Ohio because one of my Malaysian friends loves them and wanted me to try it. I agree with you guys. The sauce was good, but I didn’t love the texture. So then when I was studying in China, a couple of my friends wanted me to try it, and I told them I already did and didn’t like it very much...but they were too excited about seeing an American eat chicken feet, so I tried again 😂😂😂
