  • The Switchbot Lock Pro installs in 10 minutes and can be removed just as easily. It's also the first Matter enabled Lock I've seen so far and it works with Apple Homekit, Works with Alexa, and it's the only lock that works with Home Assistant that I've tried.
    This video review is sponsored by Switchbot, all opinions are my own
    This is a review of the Switchbot lock pro, a retrofit smart lock that can turn your key in the door, and also connect to thumbturn locks.

      I can't understand the decision to orient the batteries perpendicular to the door instead of parallel. This would be a shoe-in, but it's so unnecessarily boxy.
      I've had a Wyze Lock for 2 years that is only about an inch and a half deep

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  Місяць тому

      I can only speak for me and my setup, but this orientation brings the lock in line with my door handle, before I would bash my keys on the handle getting then to the lock. I like that it stands proud of the door, but I get why people might feel differently

      Let me help you out here Phil for the next time you have a problem with 3M tape objects. Depending on which chemical they used a little bit of cleaning alcohol will loosen up 3M tape to remove the object. Second option I found that often works well is if you have a heat gun. Ironically I've got several because people are idiots. Heat guns are usually used for removing wallpaper they're similar to a hair dryer but a lot more powerful don't use one of the hair dryer! I can't stress that as enough don't even think about it. Again people are idiots..
      Don't aim it directly at the door itself and don't get it too close but they work great for getting 3M tape off stuff like this. They're also used as an example for removing vinyl wraps from a car. I specifically have one that was made for moving vinyl wrap from a car. The one for removing vinyl wrap ironically I got at a thrift store lo. I've gotten two or three from the 1970s/80s Black & Decker for removing wallpaper and things like that people throwing out large amounts of old tools when people passed away. i have used them on quite a few occasions for issues in winter with stuff freezing like heating up the spark plug system on a snowblower when it's like 20 below zero outside or colder ;). You know how it always rains and Britain except for like one day a year? I live in Nova Scotia Canada. If it's not raining here usually it's snowing or we're having a hurricane. We get I think two or three weeks of actual son over the span of one year and I don't mean two or three weeks straight LOL. I mean one or two days followed by weeks of cold dark snow or rain.Hence why a lot of us take our trips in Britain it's more like home without the snow.

    A valid point with keys on both sides of the door/lock. There are locks which allow either side to turn independantly, allow keys in both sides without an issue. But if the lock does not have this feature, then do not leave keys in the lock. Every manufacturer has a lock in there program which can be opened from both sides even with a key in the other side. The locks that allow keys in both sides are also more secure, they have less vulnerabilties to certain opening methods.

      I have had a battery powered backlit keypad automated lock with remotes for the last 14 years. It is one thing I haven't bothered to make 'smart'. Problem with locking is that many multi-point locks require you to lift the handle to engage the latches.

    • @deckingman
      @deckingman Місяць тому +2

      I couldn't agree more. All our exterior doors have multi-point locking which require the handle to be lifted (manually) to engage those multiple locking points. Which makes all these "smart locks" rather dumb IMO.

    • @alex_ob1
      @alex_ob1 Місяць тому

      Surely the point is that you don't need a key. Having to lift the handle is no different to having to close the door!

    • @deckingman
      @deckingman Місяць тому +1

      @@alex_ob1 With multi-point locks, there is a bar that runs the entire length of the door with multiple pins in it. This bar is connected to the handle such that when the handle is raised, the bar moves up and the pins engage with multiple sockets around the door edge. The key lock only prevents the handle from being depressed. So locking the door properly is a two stage process. First the handle must be raised to engage the multi-point locks, then the key (or smart lock) has to be turned to prevent the handle from being moved. So you have to physically and manually engage the multi point locking and while you are at the door doing that, you might as well turn the key as well. You can of course lock the door with the key (or smart lock) but the physical locking mechanism will only be a (usually flimsy and easily forced) simple single latch point which actually makes the door far less secure.

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  Місяць тому +1

      I had a multipoint lock door at my old house. Still installed the Switchbot Lock (original) and just lifted the handle as I left and the Switchbot locked the house a few seconds later, it’s not much more effort than closing the door right? The switchbot lock doesn’t need to raise the handle to unlock the door.

    • @alex_ob1
      @alex_ob1 Місяць тому +1

      @@deckingman my point is that even with a smart lock, you still need to physically shut the door. So while shutting the door it's not much extra effort to lift up the handle. The smart lock means that you don't need to then use a key as well.

    How does it compare to other locks? For example, to the Aqara A100 you looked at previously.

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  Місяць тому

      Of all the locks I’ve tried this is the easiest to install, and of the retrofits it is the neatest and the sturdiest. It’s chunkier than the EZVIZ that I tried, but I have more confidence in this one for longevity, it really does feel solid
      If I had the choice to fit something like the a100 it would need to match my door a bit better as it would be visible on the outside and it’s really big, but that thing really was cool. If it matches your door then I’d consider that as equal and of course it works with Aqaras ecosystem which is a big plus for me.
      It’s swings and roundabouts I guess.

    How do the backplates work when the lock is on a slightly more slender vertical bar thingy?
    Your installation used adhesive on a relatively thick vertical 'handle bar' but when it's slimmer, theres almost no surface area for the backplate to adhere to. Is that enough?

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  Місяць тому

      The old switchbot lock could be mounted from the side and attached to the door itself and then the turning part could be positioned up and down to fit over the thumb turner/key

    Hi Paul, my door has a multipoint lock with a deadlock as per most UK UPVC doors. How does this work as I have to physically lift the door handle to enable the multi point to locate before I can turn the key to lock the door so I’m not sure how you can lock the door remotely? Am I missing something? Great job on the video and the production work.

    • @paulhibbert

      Unfortunately for locks where you have to lift the handle you’ll still need to lift the handle as you leave before the switchbot will then lock your door.
      At my old house I had the original switchbot lock automatically lock after a few seconds of the door being closed which gave me time to lift the handle, you’ll find after all these years that you’ll still be in the habit of lifting it anyway.

    Locks with a key on both sides and that will only work with a key on one side at a time are not dangerous, they are designed that way. It is for security and is part of what was the industry standard if you wanted contents insurance on your home. Many insurers still only work with deadlocks so any of this smart stuff or thumb turns will nullify the insurance. The 2 keys issue was designed that way so that you had a way of forcing a door to stay locked from the inside. Many people with euro cylinder front doors will leave a key in over night to aid exit in an emergency and to ensure no one with or without a key can open the lock from the outside.

    Happy Saturday. This has a great price tag, but will need to wait for Aqara to have a comparison. I dont use a thumb turner because I fear if someone does get in through the window they can open the front door from the inside and carry out whatever they want, without a key they could not open a normal lock. But here is my question Paul, does it know that the door was locked from the outside so no one is at home and therefore it does not allow the door to be opened from the inside using the big button? Also is this pet friendly because the last thing anyone wants is for the dog to jump up and press the button and open the door. If this function is missing it is not a smart lock for me.

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  Місяць тому +2

      All good points, and the dog isn’t something I considered. You could use 3rd party smart systems such as a home assistant or smart things to achieve something similar, but switchbot doesn’t currently have geofencing and even with home assistant, the button is designed to open the door regardless. That said the button can be set to only respond to double click and can be set to only lock the door so you can rely on turning the mechanism instead. That fixes the dog problem at least.

    "...glue it to your [insert surface here]" Yes, there are a few things that the home automation elves have installed in the dead of the night in our home as well. (That's my story and I'm sticking with it.) Most times they're met with a resounding "meh," but on a few occasions I get, "Are you intending to keep that there?" (Which, according to my handy translator of wife phases means, "You are _not_ keeping that there.")
    This lock can probably pass the "AYItKTT" test. (We really need a better acronym.) And even an accomplished DIYer like me can appreciate "no modifications" and "easy installation."
    "Work with Home Assistant": Without creating a bespoke YAML file? Yay! (...waiting for the "What's wrong with it?" section because I'm that cynical.)
    What's wrong with it: Backlit keypad. Agreed. I'm sure you could rig an automation that would turn on a light when you get close to the keypad, but it would be nice to tap a button and have it light itself. Yes, that would drain the battery some small increment each time, but it would still be nice.
    That's all that's wrong with it??? Wow. Checking those purchase links right now.
    Oh wait. It needs a hub that can only handle 4 devices. :( They need to fix the last part right now. I don't like Yet Another Hub, but it would be tolerable if it was a Matter Hub that handled numerous devices.

    Check with your home insurer about these & thumbturn cylinders before you install them on an outer door as they can invalidate your home insurance due to vulnerabilities and security issues.
    Also if you use something like this with the key left in the cylinder and you get robbed when your insurer asks you if you left the key in the cylinder they won't care if you had a motorised internet accessible control on it (although they will look at this as an issue too) they will just turn (unintentional pun) your claim dowm as you left the key in the lock (hence thumbturns can be an issue too).

      Anyone got any links to evidence this? I mean, this thumb turner is a Yale cylinder with all the certifications. Almost all new build houses have thumb turners, keys are becoming less and less common on the inside of doors as they’re not as safe in a fire.

      @Mrs-NWA Місяць тому

      Yes, it was in some details of our own insurance policy, maybe T&Cs.
      Just because it's there in a new build doesn’t mean the insurer will agree to it.
      I fitted a thumb turn to our own property front door some year ago then had to remove it swiftly afterwards as discovered the insurer did not like it. There is a method that burglars use to enter a property through the letterbox and thumb turn cylinders are deemed a vulnerability.

      @Mrs-NWA Місяць тому

      I think YT might be removing my posts with link references. Nevertheless just google thumb turn and home insurance and the information is out there. In general the advice is check with your insurer. There was a locksmiths blog article that mentioned they may be ok for internal front doors of flats but the advice is check with your insurer.
      "Are Thumbturn Locks Insurance Approved?
      Although traditionally thumbturn locks are not insurance approved there is a British Standard BS8621 which allows the use of a tumbturn lock for internal front doors in flats. These are most commonly found in new build flats. It would be advisable to check with your insurance company if they would accept this for your particular property."
      Also a BS certification doesn't mean the insurer will accept it, just means it is manufactured to a certain standard.
      "Are thumb turn locks insurance approved?
      In order to qualify for insurance coverage, insurance companies may have particular standards for door locks. Thumb turn locks may not be insurance-approved for outside doors due to their lower security rating. It’s crucial to confirm with your insurance provider and, if required, think about switching to a more secure lock type.
      It is important to contact your insurance company to find out if your thumb turn lock has insurance approval. They may offer advice on the kinds of locks that satisfy their criteria for security. For more information, check our post on insurance approved lock types."

    Do European homes generally not have inner and outer doors? Here in the US South, every house I've ever lived in had outer storm doors and inner regular doors on every entrance. Both are set into the same door frame so the knobs and locks are very nearly touching each other in between. This means there's no space for one of these on the outside door which kinda makes these useless here. Until somebody can build one of these that fits inside the lock body I guess I'm continuing to use a key like a normie.

    I've had Schlage automatic locks for a few years now. I bought them because my family often forgets to lock the doors. Is the attraction for this one that you can keep your existing locks and just add the automation? Because I have to say that black box looks huge and kinda ugly.

      He lost me at far better looking device. I guess he’s comparing it to the first Switchbot lock, which looks awful. But this chunky thing isn’t much better. I think a simple Schlage lock would have been much better. Yes, you have to play with the cylinder, but the wife isn’t setting it up. Also, you can still use a key to open the door.

      @@paulhibbert I decided to watch the rest of the video after your reply-thanks for checking in with your viewers 😉. I think the smart features look great, and it checks off a lot of boxes in terms of functionality. However, I think you’re hard-pressed to convince anyone that this thing isn’t a chonky behemoth. I guess there’s a technical limitation in why it couldn’t be slimmed down, but form is almost as important as function with a lot of things in your home.
