Raising Two Baby Sparrows

- This is a video showing a little bit into how we raised a baby sparrow named Lance. We loved him very much and learnt so much about raising wild Sparrows.
We hope he is doing well in his new home.
Ps. We also know it is a FEMALE sparrow. We just called her Lance for so long, that we didn't feel it necessary to change the name and I didn't want to confuse anyone in the video by saying her, then him. -
i just raised a sparrow and the 3rd of this month was his release day. The next day i returned to the place i released him, called him, and he came! It was one of the most amazing things that's happened to me. I miss him so much! I teared up watching your video :)
This story moved me. I dont know why but those little and very common birds have the ability to touch our hearts. Thanks for sharing.
Juan Diego Velez Funes Thank you for your kind words
Found a nestling sparrow in the front of our house a month ago and raised him. He imprinted to me so we decided to keep him. He joined the family and was such a cool bird, I was very attached and he knew me. Unfortunately he passed 2 days ago, unexpectantly and suddenly in my hands. My wife and I are heartbroken. I'm so glad we have pictures and video. It was amazingly rewarding experience. I miss him, the house seems so quiet now. Your video reminds me of him and brought me to tears.
I'm so sorry that you lost Lance. I hope she is doing well. I have a male sparrow, Harry, who I have been raising since he was a day old. He is now over four months old. We do not intend on releasing him, but I am sure that if Lance ever needs you, she will come back to you. Sparrows don't fly too far from home anyway, so she should be nearby. Well done for raising her so well!
I've had 4 sparrows over the last 3 years. All were great! They loved our living room so much that even when the windows was opened they would not leave. They would look out, but did not fly out.
He touched my soul. I have made a self sustaining nature reserve sort of park for my little friends. around 600 birds including sparrows have taken refuge there. They eat , play and sing merrily. I am a bird fanatic and I respect you for doing what is right. I know it is very hard to part from a beautiful bird you have raised. I have experienced that feeling , they take away a big chunk of you with them but in the end you feel satisfied that you did a right thing. Thank you for being such an amazing person.
Sumit Sachan Aw, thank you for the lovely comment! I appreciate it! I adore the work you do for your birds! You're their hero!
You are a great person. God bless you.
Mtrader121 Thank you
aww that is super sweet. You're very lucky he stuck around. Sometimes I wish we put a band on her foot to see her. Like a tag. We have so so many sparrows in our area and every single time we see one, we think of Lance and wonder.
I have 3 sparrows. One is flightless, but the two others fly. They love the home we've given so much that when we left the windows opened so that they could fly free, they didn't leave.
aww! Sounds cute! thanks for saving them!! I wish you all the best! Thank you for your kind words
Wow! What a coincidence. I have a pet baby sparrow too! Aren't they just the sweetest? Mine likes to land on my head! XD
I also have a little one. Her name is Casey and she's just so attached to me. Her eyes were open when I found her. A couple worker was about to step on it, 'to end it's misery' and he asked me about it the other day. She is already about a month old and is unable to walk due to a broken leg. It's healed close to normal as I've kept her in a triangle bed so she had to stand so to sleep, because that's where she spends the most time at and it worked! She had a tumor on her chest as well but with a full 5 hours of praying during work, when I got home, it was COMPLETELY GONE! God's never afraid to show himself when you most need it. The prayer wasn't even FOT ME! It was just for Casey. "Please don't let her pass while I'm at work." My boyfriend covered my shift the first 2 weeks and that night was the first and only night back.
My bf and I found the same guy to! Feeding it the same thing and a mixture of baby food. He's made it through one night so far. Keeping my fingers crossed for him/her.
Ashley Ferrelli I hope he made it!!
+woolife i have three of them i rescued them yesterday!
+PJ yegorov but i dont know what species
thank you so much for the prompt reply and the tips. i will try my best!
I love watching your video, we have two sparrows we raised. They live now in our enclosed balcony with lots of branches and and toys. We grow their seeds in a pot and they love to eat the sprouts. By the way, Lance is a girl.
This is awesome, I hope he made it and has a family of his own now that he's on his own.
Good Luck! Those are such cute names!
Aw! Very cute videos.
Depends how big your bird is! If it is fully feathered, I fed Lance about every 45 min - 1 hour but they will let you know. If you hold the stick above his mouth, he should open it expecting food and will slow down when he starts getting full. I would use polysporine for the wound to keep bacteria out! Also make sure he is warm, if you don't have a lamp, but a water bottle (one that wont melt) with hot water, wrapped in a facecloth in the box/cage you're using so he can snuggle it.
Well done n good luck to Lance, you get so attached to them,we rescued a female blue tit few yr ago,we had her a few wks to help her find food for herself, she came back to the garden feeders and would always come nearest as she trusted us all,so she got extras in winter, come spring her and her mate were at these feeders and looking for bugs 19hr a day, next thing she bring 7 juveniles for me and season after there were 6,and 6 the following spring but she died i think when they was just fledglings
What a wonderful video! Right now i am taking care of two baby Sparrow's also! Their names are Bobby and Grumpy. They are fluttering around but not ready to fly on theyre own yet! I hope they do well.
Aw thanks so much! We really hope so :)
its awesome to see other people raising these birds :-) we have a sparrow named Bang Bang she will be a year old on the 28th of June :-) thanks for helping out a bird in need :) sometimes they need us :-)
enzo Maldera I love the name!!
We have our Phoebe. We found her when she was a couple of days old after black birds got to her nest. She was 1 year old May 29th and lives free in our house..
I love Sparrows and would love to raise one sometime.
it funny how much care and love for something u raised from birth (or hatched)to adulthood can have in such a short amount of time. i completely fell apart when my rescued sparrow was killed .i came home from work one day and could not find her after an extensive search i saw that he was dead and after inspection i saw my dog killed her just to do it i guess cause she wasnt eaten by my dog who had fun with the bird letting her ride on my dogs back alot needless to say i was extremely mad and didnt touch her or talk to her 3 weeks .when i made a grave and a lil casket .i cried for a while and now i have an emptiness i cant seem to fill that void .
It's not often to know people would care for sparrow, let alone rescue one. Did you know there are people who actually hire professionals to purposely shoot sparrows? It makes me feel completely in shock. Sad that Lance wasn't able to have a long life, but thankfully you gave Lance a chance. That's very admiring!
Zeitgeist TTD I did know of that unfortunately. It's heart breaking. I know they do this for Starlings too. I have a Starling now actually named Clifford. He's 3 years old and bonded with me so he'll be my pet forever now. (Too unsafe to release..). It makes me sad to think of them being killed although I do recognize they are invasive in some areas.
woolife You know that's why they kill sparrow - the specie deems as being too invasive. Without discussing much about it, I think that's a perspective that needs lots of re-examination. We're also a specie who is Extremely invasive. Thanks for having the kind heart to take of these less "exotic" bird!
Thank you so much for your video, because we have found Lance ll. We have named him in memory of your Lance. Our little bird already has feathers, but cannot eat on his own. I didn't know what to feed him when we found him so I mixed baby formula with some corn meal. I hope that will work for time being until I can get baby bird formula, I don't have a cat so I no cat food either. I hope I will be as successful as you were.
Debbie
Debra Graham aw this is too sweet!
I just found 2 sparrows literally just hanging from their nest around 11pm. 😟 I really didn't expect one of them to survive because it was so tiny, at 3:30 I woke up to check on them and the smaller one indeed passed away. 😢 In the morning and friend who raises larger birds told me what to do. I am currently feeding "squeaker" ham in gravy baby food because it is high in fat and protein (very important). We estimate Squeaker to be 11+ days old because the eyes are open. This lil one is very strong and I pray he/she makes it
I've never heard of that food combination. I've always used the highest fat & protein cat food (kibbles) that I can find. I put some in a container, mix with boiling water and a few drops of bird vitamins (that I get from Petsmart) and let sit over night. For babies, I add water and make it super mushy to hand feed and as they grow older I let it be a bit dryer so they can eat it on their own. I have a pet starling who still eats this (amongst other food) to date.
All the best with your little one!
Hi,. We are in Miami. We found a little sparrow few months ago. Actually this is the second one we've found . His brothers died the time they fell from the nest. This was the only one that survived. So we took him home. He is already flying around the room. We tried to free him three times. He goes away for few seconds but he/she comes back . We really want him to be free but he won't go. I was wondering if you want to have him/her. We don't want him to put him in a cage either.
Victor Labaut I live in Ontario. It wouldn't be a good idea to bring it this far. Putting him in a cage isn't a bad thing. It will allow him to learn how to fly without getting injured but it if you put branches in there it will allow him to learn how to hold onto them and such. Leaving the cage outside with food and water is always a good start for letting a raised bird go wild. They will sometimes end up staying close to the home.
ok thanks
Adorable. Maybe little Lance went on to become a papa & grandpa b-coz of you!
wonderful video.
How cute is that man! Well done, and yes hard it is to say goodbye. Im sure he´s fine. :) My daugter found two on the tarmac, the one died after an hour. :( We have it now on the sixt day and its feeding well. The feathers seem to grow fast, but its still pink. :) Mayby a litlle week old? Great video.
Hi, I just found one, and have been feeding him. He or she is very small. I wonder if it's legs are broken. Can you tell me when it was that your bird started using it's legs. I wish I could post a pic so you can see it.
It's ok for now. But I highly recommend going to the pet store and getting a kibble that is high in fat and protein. I boiled water and let the kibble soak in it over night in the fridge. The next day, I would drain any extra water (if any) was in the bowl and then mush it to a very small chunky paste like consistency. Thick enough to hold it's shape when feeding. I sometimes would mix in boiled egg for added protein.
Thank you!
so cute!
so precious
Hi there! What a beautiful video! I am currently taking care of a sparrow that I found on the sidewalk. She was only a few days old when I found her. I am guessing she I approximately 16-18 days old at the moment. I had a question I was hoping you could answer. Do you remember how old your bird was when she started to feed on her own? I am leaving food for her in her cage but she is still insisting on me feeding her. I would like to eventually let her back into the wild because I know its what's best for her but I want her feeding on her own, as well as being able to fly and move well. She's still a little clumsy...lol
I fucking understaaaaaaaaand you, I went throught the same with my magpie. But then you know, living free is the best thing for those animals. Besides sparrows are very sociable, I'm sure she found a new sparrow family
kitiarakitiara aw thanks for the kind words!
Aww!!!!! Cute
Oh yes, thank goodness for that! :))
Oh I have a 9 day old sparrow he's just getting his feathers he came to me bald and eyes shut,I've fallen in love with this bird I hate rescuing ha ha ha cause I think omg is he gonna be able to survive the outside cause my bird loves snuggling in his towel!god I'm gonna be a mess!I've lost a lot of sleep for this baby, its like having a newborn child again!but this bird is so freaking cute I have to just rub him all the time his name is chirps and he already knows I love him!
Oh I know :( But hopefully he is ok! Jabbawockee is SOO cute!
He was not fully grown yet but you raised him well. He looks like my bird Jabbawockee I have videos of him on my channel
great video. thanks for sharing. my cat caught what i believe is a juvenile sparrow yesterday and im very sorry it happened. its still alive and i have him in a dark and warm box. how often did you feed lance as an adolescent? no rescue groups want to take him because he is not a native species and is a common bird. i know he needs anti biotics due to the cat bite and i clean his wounds peroxide but im at such a loss! im researching all i can...thanks!
How old is he? And what type of bird does he look like? Keep him warm and in a safe spot in the meantime.
Thank you :)
My wife and I found our first Sparrow this evening and it is very young no feathers yet but you can see them breaking through if this makes any sense..Now we have been feeding it every 45 mins....I heard you can give the feeding a total of 6 hrs of non feeding.. and then start feeding again every 45 mins??? is this true?? How much do you feed the baby when feeding and with the bird formula how much where you giving your baby at each feeding please?? We really want to help this little one and we are scared that it is going to pass on us...I was also thinking if it is alive by tomorrow morning I may take it to the vet and just let them deal with it ..I would for sure spend the time on this little one I just can not find the proper answers to continue this to go on with trying to make this little angel have a chance at life...Could you please give us a little of your time and just write back to us to give us a heads up on how you did the bedding keeping them warm feeding and when did you stop feeding them at night when you went to bed..did you get up every 20 mins and feed them through the night as well or what??? Thanks so so so so much for your time God Bless...Great job on keeping the one alive:)
SuperMusicman1975 I'm very sorry I never responded. I actually just discovered all of this activity on the video today. Everything was being flagged as spam in my email :( How did everything go with your little one?
I tried to save a baby bird from my two cats and when I called a vetinary service for help he escaped and my dog took him outside. We lock the doors while their open, open enough for the dogs only to get out (and cats) so I struggled getting through. I tried to save little maybelle, and when I got to her she was gone.
lol you really don't want to! Although cute, they are A LOT of work and responsibility. Also, they may imprint on you which means, you now have a new pet!
Hello they are lovely sparrows, I also found one yesterday night a baby sparrow what do they eat???
possibility. Also if it was alone, it could have been imprinted on you, depending on how young you rescued it, so it may have just simply not known how to protect/take care of himself in the wild. Did he survive?
so nice
my sparrow was about 2 moths and 10 days old
that's so sad :(
I'm never letting my dove out of my house!
Hi Woolife, I'm very sorry to hear bout your little one who pass away, i watched your awesome video and it made me cry, it was very sad, i hope he sleep in peace and i i 'll never forget this moment and finally i could please ask you very kindly, what is the name of your song in the video clip, its absolutely to hear and made me cry to listen to it.Thanks ;-)
Tee S
Thank you for your kind words! I'm happy you enjoyed the video, sorry it made you cry. I hope Lance found peace as well. The song is actually just a UA-cam sample they let you use. I'm sorry I'm not sure of the name.
We thought our sparrow was a female for a long time and then one day its feathers starting changing colors (black on the throat). Check out my sparrow video. We've had it for over three years now. I let it out of the cage for about an hour every night after everyone goes to bed.
I recently found a baby sparrow. He has most of his feathers but is not as active as I would imagine a bird his age to be. For the past few days I've been feeding him mashed up crickets and peanuts. What can I do to help him?
You are lucky..we still have our female sparrow (Verma), she bitches at me all day, she has special needs so cant be let free as she can't fly properly (probably why they kicked her out of the nest to start with). at least your little bird touched your hearts for a while, well done ;)
I have a sparrow which I rescued in August of last year. She has total control of the living room. ಠ_ಠ
Hi, I like the music very much, can you tell me the name?
nightdash Hey there, the music is actually just a generic UA-cam sample! Glad you like it though :)
Ok so when i found and raised a sparrow about 2-3 weeks after it started flying we decided to let it go but it came back with a huge gap on its chest, what do you think might have happened? Did we let it go too soon?
I definitely would NOT set her free! She sounds like she is way to bonded too you. She would not do well in the wild, especially if you have cats around which she is used to. Sounds like you have a lovely feathered friend.
I found one and named it winter.i still have her:)
christian gutierrez Lovely name!
@MegyLouWho aw thx hun!
Hey after one week i writed that post he started to fly. I put him in bigger room he was so happy and was flying around room. Then he started fly outside of house. When i whisle and strech my hand he flew on my hand or shoulder. He was flying further away from house and after some hours arrived back every day at nights he was sleeping at home. Always when i was calling him by whisling like they do he flew back from somewhere. But Exactly week ago he didnt arrived back home i think something bad happened :( from him there is no trace. But arround my house i see many the house sparrows (i dont know how to call them in english but in my lanquage they are called so) but my raised one was field sparrow(dots on cheek). And around my house i dont see any field sparrows any more but thing is that my sparrow was scared by other sparrows so he couldn fly with them. And i dont know whats heppened with him :((((
Yup we did! We just kept the name Lance!

awwwww poor spaarrow im sorry : (
hahah aww. Does she like you at least?
I found one too!
What's the song in this video?
I want my baby comes baaaack !!! x'(
Please reply to this! We found a sparrow ( looks to be an adult) with a broken wing! We don't want any wildlife officers to euthanize him but were not sure what to do with it! He is in good health other than the wing! Has a big appetite and is drinking...we just want to be able to release him back where he belongs but we can't with that wing! Please notice and reply to my comment!
Poppyseed5400 I'm sorry I didn't see this. I'm afraid I wouldn't have been much help regarding the broken wing. I understand how to raise and feed them, but a broken wing is really something a vet or wildlife tech needs to take care of. Most likely your local spca/animal control would euthanize it, but a wildlife officer may not.
I have got 2 sparrows , thy come everyday to my balcony in mumbai and sleep at night there, we want to feed them water nd food but they are too afraid to come in a couple of times they have come inside but we dont eat or drink anything.here the climate is too high in summers a sparrows are rare in mumbai any idea how can i help or gain their trust?
If you catch them, and hand feed them, they will like you.
this story is breath taking honest...I hope to god we can do the same for this little angel fighting for he or she"s life..we would love to have a one on one chat with you if you would to just give us a few lessons on this...we have no clue what we are doing but we are just trying to read and soak up as much info as possible..we just do not know when to stop feeding him every 45 mins???? please help us we do not want to kill this baby
SuperMusicman1975 I'm sorry I missed this comment. All of my alerts were flagged as spam and I just discovered them now. How did everything go with your little one?
it went well....How are you doing??
hard work guys..... but it was not in vain ...u r like oscar schindler
ıf I find a bird in the street someday, ı am going to try all these things:D
i cant teach my sparrow to fly he is 3 weeks old he never tried to fly just jumping of hights
Try putting him or her on your hand and doing what the man in the video did at 2:05 :)
If you raise them amongst your household they will have a hard time surviving in the wild.
I hope he's ok :(
my nitish oh my god wow sparrow yeah
My first baby sparrow I tried to let it fly from 6 floor it worked than I tried again and he accidently hit a pillar

What song is this? I found my baby sparrow today and I am planning on raising it. I literally cried when I watched your video! Bird has most of it's feathers at this point so we probably won't spend the time that you did with your sparrow. But beautiful story, thanks! Our jew jew btw.
Joda Cokol aw! I hope all went well raising your sparrow. The song is just a youtube sample!
Nope, it depends cause some of the birds can t eat meat :)
