    Residential Cleaning business owner here. I bought a laundry mesh bag and put mine in the washer machine. Once the washing machine is done, flatten them and let them air dry. You will save so much money!
    Also, when dusting, vacuum them to remove excess dust, it also helps to create static again 😉

      I found washing them in the machine caused them to clump up. Have you found a way to stop that from happening? if so, please share!!

      I might try it this way. “By hand” seems to use a LOT of water. Here in california (& other western states), water needs to be conserved - not be wasted…

      I DO really like the idea of washing them by hand, tho… 😏😌

    I love these dusters, but don't like their "non-sustainability factor". I tried crocheting some (they don't work well), I tried making my own from baby flannel blankets (they don't work well), and today, I found this video because I was looking to see if these dusters were compostable (they aren't), and I've found something even better, washing them by hand! It never occured to me! Thank you so much MamaSal!!

      It is one of those "why didn't I think of that?" moments, right? Btw, hard to believe but I never bought more. Still using the originals :)

    Swiffers are great!!! Really...
    I've been just moving dust around for years with a "wanded thing" from the dollar store..and began to think SWIFFER... mayber they are ALL that ..
    And they are!!! a remarkable difference in where I dust.. and now!!!..you show me how to conserve them...
    I love you..

    Just received my Swiffer 360 Dusters, and immediately made one unrecognizable with dust/dirt/cobwebs/cat hair. There's no way I could afford all the Swiffer refills I'd need to clean my home if I just used and then tossed them. So glad I checked UA-cam. Thank you, Mama Sal!

    Just tried this for myself. Wow....it works!
    One thing I did was after squeezing out the excess water by hand, I put it back on the handle, took it outside and shook it (yes, like a dog). It really took most of the remaining water off. Now it's sitting on my patio table drying in the sun! Should be good to go again in a couple of hours ;-)
    UPDATE: Leaving out in the sun, it was dry and ready for another go-round in about an hour!

    • @DearMamaSal
      @DearMamaSal  9 років тому +1

      iamacuriouscanuck Glad you tried it. The trick is not to "scrub" them. That will ruin the Swiffer. Yes, you can definitely dry them on the handle, too. I dry mine on the oven bar, overnight. I have been using the same 5 Swiffers for years now. :)

    I wash mine in a small tub and gently wring them out. I dry them on a rack. When they are dry and I am watching tv I use a wire pet brush and a rat tail comb and brush them out. They look pretty good. Later I spray furniture polish on them and store them in a loose plastic bag so the furniture spray soaks in and dries. They seem to work really just as good at picking up so much. But they are so expensive and I don't know too many ppl that would spend that much time washing and combing them back out to reuse. Thanks for the video. I really learned a lot.

    Hello my friend....wise lady to think of this. I have 2 I will be doing this to tomorrow. I'm sorry I've been gone lately. My dear sweet cat max got cancer in his mouth the end of Jan and I was doing all I could to make him comfortable. I finally put out him to the rest he so deserved on Friday tho my heart is broken. I did manage to watch benji and Judy each morning for that always made my heart happy and a smile on my face seeing all 3 babies. So now it is time to get back to my old self. Hope this finds you doing well my friend. Xo

      +jrmint2 I found that washing them in the machine made them clump. You might also try putting them in a glass jar with a little dish soap. Hold the jar between your two hands and move them in a circular motion. That way the dusters move in one direction and do not clump :)

    I reluctantly bought a 360 hand duster with some refills with the intention to wash them rather than toss.
    Your advice was great. Can't wait to wash one.
    One question:
    What was the type and brand of soap?
    Wasn't sure if it was hand soap or dish soap. Not sure if the emollients in hand soap would make the fibers less magnetic?!

  • @Cessylee1
    @Cessylee1 3 роки тому +1

    When I washed my swiffer duster so yes it became clean and it became fluffy, but it lost its ability to hold the dust in the same way as it did when it was new. How do you get it "magnetic" and hold the dust again after washing the swiffer duster?

    • @DearMamaSal

    • @jozina1
      @jozina1 3 роки тому +1

      If you have a dryer you could try to put it in the dryer on the lowest heat. But without a dryer sheet. The warm air and friction create static, and could make the dusters static again.
      It's a theory, I haven't been able to test it myself. I don't have acces to a dryer. But it's worth a try! Will you let me know if you are able to try it?

    • @jozina1
      @jozina1 3 роки тому +3

      I read another comment that it also helps to bring the static back by using a vacuum cleaner on the duster! Worth a try as well!

    Have you tried, once you have them washed and most of the water squeezed out, running them through the no-heat air-dry fluff cycle of your laundry dryer? Just wondering if that would fluff them up nicely again. It disappoints me just how fast one of these will stop attracting, and start re-depositing, dust once it has encountered anything beyond a very slightly dusty surface. That's when I normally change them. But in some areas, like electronics, they can "fill up' in minutes. That's why I came looking here.

    I remember watching this a _long_ time ago, so I always had it in the back of my mind that Swiffer dusters could be hand washed.
    Glad I found it again!
    DearMamaSal, you mention in another comment that you've adjusted to using mason jars for the (I'm guessing) soapy soaking process. Has your method changed beyond that in these last 5/6 years? Do you still rinse along the spine and allow them to air dry afterward?
    I've been stretching the life of my first duster piece (which looks a bit awful now), so much so that the other 4 in the box are still unused.
    Would appreciate any insight you could offer!

      Actually no.
      I'm at the point where my Swiffer is dirty enough to (in my mind) be worth cleaning, so I sought out your video because I remembered watching it years ago and needed a refresher to make sure I wouldn't miss anything. That's when I combed comments and saw you mention the jar method. Pretty sure I don't have the glassware for a soak, so I'll just follow your video!

    this is a lovely tutorial - I have the same issue with washing my naturally curly hair which turns to knots if not careful. But - food for thought - how much wasted water (which costs a lot and rising) and is a very valuable resource to conserve. AND you pay for each drop out of the tap as well as each drop down the drain. I would venture the cost of water is more than the savings of the duster refill. Making wash machinable refills would be much better. - face it - this is still going to the trash eventually (also a concern of landfill in today's throw away society).

    • @DearMamaSal
      @DearMamaSal  9 років тому

      Venus Light good points. Actually, I did them this way for easy of videography. I normally just put mine in a Mason Jar and shake them clean and then do the same to rinse. Good points made, though. Thank you.

    I watched your advertisement on TV about the man that has 2 dogs, Dusty and Cooper and gets a box full of sweeper products. He uses what looks like the original sweeper and I'd like to know where I can buy the original sweeper. I've had one for years and it is now broken and need a new original. The stores that carry your products don't have the original in stock. When are you going to put the original sweeper in the stores so I can get a new one. Don't want any of the new sweepers only the original.Please advise.Mrs. Barbara French

      try sending your question to: pgconsumersupport.secure.force.com/ContactUs?brand=Swiffer&country=United+States+of+America&language=English-US. I am just a consumer, Barbara. You need to ask Procter and Gamble who make the product. I haven't seen the original one either, btw.

      Mine work as well as when I first got them. I guess there is only one way to find out, Sandra. If you are that allergic I will leave it to you as to whether you want to test them out. I would say that if you can use them new then you would probably be ok but that would be your call to decide if you want to "test" that out.
