This is a great story! Grouch Marx did a wonderful job at this serious role! The wisdom here is priceless! I hope this made sense to a lot of young people and changed some lives for the better and hope it continues to!

Perfection! Love seeing Grouchy Marx in a fatherly role. And Dennis Hopper, what a great Actor, and boy he is missed. RIP Dennis. What wonderful cast if Actors. Good story too. Waiting to be independent is the best way to start a marriage.

Whew! I'm breathing a sigh of relief after watching this. Groucho remains one one of the very few heroes in my life who has never let me down. Fortunately, my expectations for this weren't very high, but he still does a fine job with a pretty lackluster role. I bet the out-takes were a lot more entertaining than the actual broadcast! Poor girl, though. Little does she know that Dennis Hopper's gonna hook up with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson and totally give up the straight life to go gallivanting off across America, basking in the freedom of the open road, never giving even one thought to her and the kids he left behind! Well, Groucho tried to warn her, but the kids these days, they just won't listen!

They DID get married in real life, were married most of the 60's. The producer of "Easy Rider" was Brooke Hayward's brother Bill. Peter Fonda was a childhood friend of the Haywards.

Groucho had previously appeared at the very end of a 1959 "GENERAL ELECTRIC THEATER" episode featuring his brothers Harpo & Chico, "The Incredible Jewel Robbery".

Thanks for posting this! I had heard about this, but had never seen it. It was hard, at first, to shake the feeling of Groucho's wise-cracking character once I heard him start talking, but his honest performance made believe in his character...even if the script wasn't all that great. It's too bad we couldn't have seen more serious roles for Groucho. He probably could have changed his entire image at this time if other productions had taken a chance on him. FYI - Brooke Hayward, who plays the daughter in this, was actually married to Dennis Hopper at the time this was made. They were married from '61 - '69 and had one child together. I'd be interested in knowing what decisions were made in casting this piece. Fred Clark, who plays Hopper's father, used to be seen on dozens of shows. He always looked like an old man to me, but died rather young, at the age of 54, six years after this aired.

I wrote to Groucho in 1967 during the initial Marx Bros resurgence. Groucho wrote back. My most prized possession.

Wow, this episode made me hate Groucho. Horrible project for him. I guess he should have stuck to comedy.
