On January 18, 1954, Jack Benny performed this TV role on radio for the "Suspense" program. This TV episode aired on Sunday, 21 November 1954. At 15:05, Benny Rubin appears, a veteran of fifty-four Jack Benny TV episodes. The second teller is Ed Kearns, seen on eight Jack Benny shows and, later, 102 episodes of Dennis the Menace as Mr. Wilson.

@@hobonickel I remember when he died during the shows run and was replaced by Gale Gordon (Mr. Mooney on The Lucy Show) as Mr. Wilson's brother.

This just goes to show that you can be very funny without being profane, rude, or by tearing people down. It takes more thought to write good comedy like this. This is a lost art-form.

    I am 75 years old.
I remember this episode from when I saw it the Sunday night it was originally offered.
I've told and retold this story many many times.
The idea amazes me. Imagine what you could get away with. And so does "Tom Jones" .
I'm going to watch the credits to determine who wrote this. Over the years I've wondered who wrote this. I'll find out in about twenty minutes!!!

      @echo echo..
Yes, I looked it up myself.
Over the years I thought for sure it was derived from Twain, or maybe O.Henry.
      But, no. No one famous.
      But, a great story.

You're right it is reminiscent of O'Henry.
It reminded me also of a long, long, long-ago radio show of Damon Runyon Theatre.
I don't know why I made that connection, and I don't recall any specific DRT story.

We’ll say this for RR - he wasn’t a great President - but he was the best President with a TV show.

There's a Classic Radio episode of "Suspense," which Jack Benny does this story along with Sheldon Leonard. It's in one of many playlists of Suspense on UA-cam. It's well worth a listen.

Speaking of familiar faces, the gentleman introducing the program looks vaguely familiar. Whatever became of him?

Thanx, BAMshowbits, for sharing this little gem!
    Keep 'em coming, please?
    And . . .
For those who found other 'the face is familiar' folks in the movie, here's the cast list (and the familiar character I remember, and who you may recognize; a * indicates a character actor with many roles, and I can't remember the name of any, right now):
    Tom Jones - Jack Benny
    Otto Kruger* - The Boss
Jesse White - Mike, aka 'Harry the old Army buddy' (appeared as Cagey Calhoun on The Ann Sothern Show; and was The Maytag Repairman; I also remember him as the hapless attendant at the asylum in Harvey)
    Kem Dibbs - Joe
Chick Chandler* - Sam the Barber
    Jean Willes - Irene
Joy Lansing - Marie (later known by Joi Lansing*; appeared as one of Jethro's many love interests on The Beverly Hillbillies, among many other glamor girl character roles)
    Laurie Mitchell - Stella
Joe Kearns - 2nd Bank Teller (later known by Joseph Kearns*, appeared as Mr Wilson, on Dennis the Menace)
    Wally Brown - Policeman
Eleanor Audley* - Woman in Restaurant (besides appearing as a character actress in many roles, she is best known as the voice, and figure model, of two of Disney's most famous villains, Lady Tremaine, Cinderella's stepmother, and Maleficent, the evil fairy in Sleeping Beauty.)
Paul Maxey - Man in Restaurant
Benny Rubin* - Vending Machine Man
    Grace Hayle - Gertrude Hanover
Harlan Warde - 1st Bank Teller
Bob Foulk - Bank Guard (later known as Robert Foulk*)
If you want more info, on this show, or any other, check imDb.com .
(That's where I found the cast list.)
(edit bc my stupidphone cannot spell properly 🙄 )

Jesse White, playing Harry the old army buddy, was in the movie Harvey with James Stewart. So Jack calling him “Harvey” must have been a nod to that movie.

It amazes me that I can remember things so clearly for so any years.

But I gotta say the laugh track is so unnecessary. ESP weird since this show doesn’t normally have one
