    My dad hired a roofer who did a horrible job and made the leaks worse and disappeared. Few nights later he had an armed robbery at 2am . The first ever robbery in over 70 years of living there. I still suspect it was that "fly by night" roofer. That's why I started researching fixing roofs myself and came across your channel and now I'm hooked. I've been buying tools and equipment to do things myself. Thanks a million for your videos and honest to goodness advice. The world needs more like you really.

    I tell people the same thing when they are buying houses, from past bitter experience. You cannot trust a building inspector, you cannot trust conveyancing, you cannot trust an agent. The only thing that will protect you is your own due diligence, I agree you must arm yourself with knowledge! Great video Flat Roof Doctor.

      thanks a lot. I have a dentist friend, and I mean a real friend. The best in the country. Was a professor at NYU, has all the degrees you can imagine, implants, makeovers, root canals, fillings, he does it all. Come to find out he did to me what everyone else will do, lie and steel. I guess when times are tough, you will do whatever is necessary to survive. I guess I am not excluded from that either. Conditions dictates ones moralities, lol so sad

    Hey thank you so much for your informative videos. I had 3 roofers come out to tear out and replace my GARAGE roof that’s 13 by 20. They all tried to scam me. They told me the wood alone would cost me 1700 to 2000 and the job will be a minimum of 4000. Your video is giving me the courage to hire a a couple of friends to help me. And I found out that the sheets of roofers wood would not even be $300 dollars. I’m just looking for a video that shows how to tear off the rotting wood that’s up their now ?

      You will need 9 sheets of 3/4 plywood (500), 9 sheets cover board (200), nails and screws and and circular plates good luck at buying a small amount roofing store only sells in large buckets then tpo,epdm , or torch down, I would do tpo personally, you will need a tpo welder too.

    We built a new home and I paid $80,000 for the roof. A significant area of the roof is flat (we live in a view sensitive area). After 5 years we saw two major leak areas. One area brought down the ceiling. Both my general contractor and my roofer went out of business so I have no recourse against either one. I hired a new roofer who told me that the roof I had was the poorest he had ever seen. The torch down material was applied directly onto plywood and not even completely torched in some areas. I don't know how I could have avoided this mistake. At least the new roofer is applying a polyurethane coating so we do not need to reroof completely.

    I do have my customers at heart, that is why I visit many of my customers after 20~ 40 years to make sure the roofs are not leaking. A 3 layer SBS polyester torchon system will last over 30~40 years. One extra layer and you have a lifespan of 50 years. If I was chasing the money, I would have used the modern "Miracle" systems that do not last long and need repairing constantly as shown on You Tube.

    It depends on what kind of repair, whether you want something to last 5 years or the
    life of the roof. Obviously a lot more care is required for a long lasting repair and it will cost a lot more than a slap dab job.

    My home has a flat roof that has large areas of standing water on it when it rains. One roofer wants to glue down foam panels and create a slope and put ipo on top another wants also to put down tapered iso board to create a slope then a 2 layer roll roofing hot tarred down. Any advice please. It has a fairly new membrane with roll roofing on top. I started to put silicone coating on it in areas because I was worried about standing water. Please advise.

    • @FlatRoofDoctor
      @FlatRoofDoctor  2 роки тому

      hmm, depends on what roofing material is currently on the roof. Ponding water on a roof is not really an issue. Why worry about something that has been there since the roof was constructed. It is only an issue if the roofing material has failed or was not installed correctly

    i like your videos 👍🫡👍
    i bought a old grocery store back in aperil. 2023. 3000 square ft. it has the old roll out ruberized asphalt rayon roofing .. low pitched . it was so cracked up it looked like a minuntchure dryed up mud flat on a river sand bar and there was leeks.. and some ponds .. ill have clost to 30 buckets of roofing tar by the time im done .. 5 more to go..
    i got to put in a drain and some outher ishues ..
    i used under coat asphalt with nylon strands . 2 coats . and now a 3rd using the nylon with plastic asphalt , i seem to like it better for a durable tuffer coat that drys much quicker.. but , this sounds crazey but i use 2 gallons of gasolien per 5 gallon bucket to thin it so i can use a roller to apply it .. 😂.
    i looked up on google how to thin it they advised not use gasoline, insted mineral sperits . or water ..
    I can't afford the mineral sperits .. and they lied about using water ..
    any way you and your wife been a big help, thanks🫡

    I'm a roofer. I believe in trust honor and loyalty. It's called quid pro qo. There are acceptable ways to come up with a price. I learned from 2brothers they can repair and make money but repairs only last so long. Not to mention regulation when shingling you can't go over 4 times. One could say your the con trash all roofers but yourself. Wait your repair guy. Not roofer. Men die on roofs trying to survive. There are pieces of shit in this world I know first hand but how dare you speak on all roofers. You seem respectful. Remember how hard roofing is. Also you do repairs bc that's your money but if you had 5guys I bet you would sell a whole roof. Working man to another trash the men who did shit jobs not all. Sorry I got Lil mad but roofers die and work extremely hard in hot weather and cold. I wish you best sir. Again my apologies if my temper got the best of me or you caught me at bad moment.

    I'm wondering why the plywood was flexing so much in just that one place on the roof.

    • @FlatRoofDoctor
      @FlatRoofDoctor  2 роки тому +1

      They were short pieces. and also 20" on center rafters calls for 3/4" plywood and not 1/2".

    • @roofmaster4403
      @roofmaster4403 2 роки тому

      That piece of plywood was installed with the grains parallel to the framing (rafters). When it comes to using 1/2" plywood for roof sheathing when there is a 24" span between rafters: it should always be laid perpendicular to the framing and should also have H-clips in between each Rafter for extra support.
      So Flat Roof Doctor is correct in several ways...
      #1: a "flat" roof really should have 3/4" boards or Plywood for sheathing. Then this problem with a sagging roof deck cannot occur
      #2: no real carpenter would lay 1/2" Plywood parallel to the frame in such a fashion. So...even though the builder himself was most likely reputable... he obviously used some hacks to save money so anyone who trusted him may be losing out

      He said it all in his videos I don't know anything about roofing and my favorite is when he says in one of his videos I don't install as per manufacturer instructions and don't care. Doesn't use any printer or glue in any video Doesn't use any 100 lb roller on any peel and stick roof he does. He tells you and you have to do us pass your foot over it. Loves to use plastic cement on everything which is flammable and passes a roofing torch on it when he's doing peel and stick. I'm surprised he hasn't burned anything down yet, he should have bin using a heat gun. All he is trying to do is put roofer down when he is trying to pretend he is a roofer. He is doing what he says all roofing companies do try and sell you, but what he wants you to buy is garbage. If he came out here saying he was a handyman I'd give him some credit for trying, but he is claiming to be some kind of ROOFING DR. What a joke.
