I'm surprised you didn't touch on the similarities Moore's run on Supreme was to Miracleman. If Miracleman was a young revisionist Moore responding to comics of his day, Supreme is an older nostalgic Moore responding to his younger self's own dark influence on the indutry. In many ways, Story of the Year completed the arc started with A Dream of Flying (and also marked the artistic conclusion of Moore's superhero phase.)

@@StrangeBrainParts It's there, but since Marvelman had a lot of Captain Marvel folded in, it's a lot less on the nose. Moore had more time with this one, too, so he had more time to explore it.
Alan Moore re-imagining of Supreme's background and origin was an apology for the darkness of his previous works at other publishers; he had a reputation for the cynical deconstructing of superheroes in Batman: The Killing Joke, Swamp Thing, and Watchmen.

except modern/non Silver Age rip offs stories on his Supreme run are still "dark", deconstructive, etc.
You people give Zack Snyder, a film filmmaker who acted within very limited and tight film format, for killing Jimmy Olsen right at the get go. Yet Moore does it twice (killing him in Whatever Happened is literally same, Moore killing off character who's 99% stories he didn't create nor stories of Superman in general, this isn't anything same as if Bates or Maggin, or Binder, Dorfman or (The) Siegel killed him off, from objective standpoint of writer = stories that this particular writer did) and you jizz in your panties because he *said* something (ie: "oi, the moedrn coemics are copeying moa Whoatchmen w'ak too mouch"), instead of actually DOING something. Both Moore and Gibbons are guilty of this btw. Constantly talking how their awesome mini series did something nobody should be doing (except comics *started* that way, Superman *wasn't* some softie nor strange self-reflective forever-lonely guy, he was The original badass that killed infinite times inferior foes and generally didn't care for well being of anyone who is willing to step on someone else), while most of the things either of them did /provided art for were exactly the same post modernist deconstruction, most of the time.
Tired of this sсhizophrenia within "real comics fans" community. People that mostly have surface level knowledge, at least of mainstream comics and its history, but oh so willing to gatekeep and/or praise some attention seeking guy throwing around hypocritical remarks shitting on his fellow artists for either doing same thing as he did or even more morally and philosophically right things with these legacy characters and/or their rip-offs which is exactly the same from objective nononsense point of view! YES!
"I'm still not sure resurrecting Omniman as a Hezbollah terrorist really works..." is a great Moore joke.
Tom Strong is a combination of pulp-era characters(Doc Savage, Tarzan, John Carter) brought into the golden, silver and bronze ages of comics. I enjoyed reading both that and Supreme, as well as the America's Best Comics run by Moore. My favorite superhero comic of his remains Top 10 though.
I don't hear "Top 10" mentioned enough.... any other writer that would be their masterpiece, but for Moore's work it seems like an afterthought if not forgotten
I think Billy Friday using rape for shock value ("Omni-dog's rape ordeal") might suggest that among British writers he represents - he might also represent Moore himself, back in the 80s when everything he did was a gritty deconstruction.

I always found it weird how synonymous '80s comics are with rape. It only happens once in Watchmen and Miracleman. This is nowhere as prevalent as the quasi-military extreme hero from the '90s.

I really enjoyed Supreme and this review. I thought the way he used Supremes "past" was genius. During a time that criticizing Superman was fashionable, he went a different direction. Thanks for doing this review.
Outstanding review! For those of us who thought Moore should have got an extended run on Supes back in the eighties, Supreme will have to do.
Agreed! Mind you, the actual Superman stories he wrote were pretty damn good.
My favorite comics
I just read all of Supreme this year and it was an absolute treat. Tom Strong was another great read. I discovered recently.
Raf- check out Top 10 if you haven't already & even Captain Britain which is rarely mentioned but a great read.
Every Supreme comic book before and after this run never happened IMO.
Supreme truly is and always has been my favorite super hero of all time
I would argue that Supreme has elements used from Moore's work on Marvel UK Captain Britain. Otherworld and the Captain Britain Corps and the Supremancy share visual and thematic similarities. Also, when writing for the title, Alan Moore had Brian Braddock Captain Britain killed off and resurrected, something that could considered as a trope in future Alan Moore stories. He also reinvented the supporting cast and had the United Kingdom become a fascist, dystopia.

No problem. Glad I could give mention to a pretty underated series. I interpret Moore's writing duties on Captain Britain as his Rosetta stone as most of would become recognising Alan Moore does come from Captain Britain. It's a little unfortunate his work on Captain Britain almost never even hinted at.
I admit, his UK Captain Britain work is a blind spot for me. And I've even read it! I don't know why I continue to overlook it. Perhaps because Miracleman was a more concise work from roughly the same time? I don't know. Hm. Again, a valuable point. It may be time to look closer at Captain Britain and do a video on it.
Strange Brain Parts you should look into Night Raven as well. As in my personal belief a fair amount of the character was used for the creation of Rorschach and V. It also shows Moore's knowledge in pulp fiction style characters that would be utilised in his later America's Best Comics works and Awesome Entertainment worldbuilding.
P.S. Fun fact: as to my knowledge, in Captain Britain, Marvelman of Earth-238 is termed as Miracleman several years before the American relaunch and now Marvel owns both properties. Funny that.
Another fun fact (I think): The Marvel Universe being known as 616 comes from that Captain Britain run. Additional Fun Fact: 616 is the accurate translation for the number of the beast, not 666. Both of those facts are from memory, so the accuracy is suspect. I look into Night Raven, too. I've never run across it, so now I'm intrigued.
The Supremacy was an excellent addition to the mythos and Moore proved himself that he could work with the first and still turn out something substantial!
This was also informative as to the differences between Morrison and Moore. It is also unfortunate to hear of Mr Swan's passing, but the art team was excellent nonetheless in my opinion. I would also love to hear your eventual thoughts on the entirety of Tom Strong or Astro City.

I loved this! Could you do a review of Promethea? I only recently managed to get the last volume i needed to read the series (i had been missing Volume 2 for years) and it seems like something that would fit into your style easily. Also, please, more Doom Patrol!
Promethea is a probably/maybe. I started re-reading it recently before getting sidetracked. As for Doom Patrol...that is likely, too. There's still a few series to get through to complete an entire overview of the team.
I never read Supreme after Alans run. Kind of glad now looking at what happened to the character.
Erik Larsen's Supreme was absolute criminal. It's like he betrayed Alan Moore's work.

At this point, Supreme stories ending in a frustrating cliffhanger has become as part of the character's cannon as his nature as only the latest encarnation of an everchanging archetype

I guess I'm the only one who saw Alan Moors run as lazy and just a rip-off, rather then a deconstruction of superman.

My understanding is that Rob had a lot of big plans for Awesome Studio ( including a comic series and possible movie with Will Smith and his wife!), but his initial investors backed out and that caused the end of Awesome.
I would love to see an adaptation of supreme like a series or a movie.
Good video. I recently "discovered " Supreme through the back door of Legion of Super Heroes fandom and finding out about the League of Eternity (Moore's LSH analog).
This is another comic I ignore coming out Image because I dislike Youngbloods, but it seems I really miss out with The Supreme.

Additionally, I was on board for Moore's reboot of 'Supreme' but had difficulty keeping track of when it was published. Missed the whole 2nd year or what came after. Thank you for catching me up.
It was reprinted by Checker Books (R.I.P.) a few years ago. Two TPB's... Story of the Year, and The Return.

This sounds like an interesting series. Where can I read it.
I ordered it from Amazon. The collected edition is made from scans from the printed pages from the original issues, so the quality is not that great in places. Still, the stories and art are amazing.
If you can find it at the library or comic shop, that's your best bet.

And then they nerfed the ever-loving heck out the character so Omni-man (from Invincible) could stand toe to toe with him and come out almost on top. And yes I say Omni-man came out on top since he was able to get up while Supreme was unconscious and carried away. But hey all in the name to make all Image Comics characters share the same continuity - cant have any of Earth's active hero's be stronger than the previously mentioned "Earth's Strongest Hero Omni-Man"

Great video! One must say Alan Moore is a genius. We know he's retiring but I hope that he has one last comic book story to tell.
He has retired, I do believe. The publication of League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Tempest #6 was his final comic book work.
You might look into the From Hell master editions...they are still being released. Who knows though, I've seen Moore flip flop on his publicly announced intentions more than once.

Moore's touch on this series has some of my favorite art from Veitch, and Sprouse's work is good fun too.
