Great story telling! Coincidentally, my daughter just learned a children’s song about the great Scot fire 2 days ago in music class. I’ll ask her the words to it in the morning and post here again. We did climb the stairs of the London tower and learned all about the London fire when we were there a couple years ago, but I loved learning about the Edinburgh fire, so thanks Tony! Congrats on being so close to the subbie goal!

First time I visited Edinburgh one of my nephews was along and he is a Fireman. He had done a lot of research about James Braidwood and the Great Fire. I've shared this video with him. I don't think he knew where the fire started. Good Video.

I've walked past that statue 100's of times and had no idea of the story. As you say always look up and all around as you never know what you'll discover. This was so interesting and was another great video Tony. Keep up the great work! :)
I did know about Edinburgh having the first (public) fire brigade but I did not know of a great fire in Edinburgh.
And I am an Edinburgh resident (well Balerno now [was Abbeyhill then Southhouse], but that is still on the outskirts).
Edit:- Just noticed the spelling mistake in the description, munition for municipal.

Loved this story. More things to look for whilst rambling around Old Town. You're not this, that or the other, but you're a grand story teller! You make a great tour guide as well. Learning so much every time I watch one if your vlogs. Thank you! And regards to Kristin & Lily. Oh, that reminds me, when naming the two baby rats I bought to keep another, E.T. as she was depressed after her mother & aunt died recently, & Petunia popped into my head when I looked at the white rat. Then, in keeping with our naming tradition, I needed another flower name. Guess which one I chose? Lily, of course! After your daughter & my favorite game app, Lily's Garden.

In fairness 1 was lack of knowledge of how floors were numbered and the other was the fact I had read 2 different accounts. 😂

What a fascinating story! I love finding out bits and pieces of the past like this, even though it’s so hard to find out the “truth” of the matter the farther out from the event, since records are lost, and memories are faulty. But storytelling is what keeps the past alive!

Lived in Edinburgh almost all my life. I know a fair amount about the city but never knew about the fire. Thank you for this. It's great to learn something new every day. My problem is now remembering 🙄

Did you know: Braidwood lived during the times of the murderous duo Burke and Hare. He was the first witnesses during their trail in 1828 as he drew the scales plans of the buildings where the murders took place in his capacity as a builder.

One day in the 60's I was at the top of Cockburn Street and watched as a fire engine went racing down doing damage to several parked vehicles as he went!
Another interesting morsel of Edinburgh History. I feel like a kid there and you are taking us on a field trip from school to learn all these historical facts. I think learning all these things helps me feel part of the city. You are not just walking through, but you really know things about what made it what it is today. Thanks for another interesting video.

Hi there, I was a student in Edinburgh Uni in 1994/1995. I remembered that part of the canongate went into blaze in 2002. That was really sad that such a historical part of Edinburgh vanished into ashes. Could you show us what part burned down (maybe try to find images prior to the blaze) and how the redevelopment turned up. Cheers.

This practice continues onto the States. The movie Gangs of New York is an accurate representation of what happened. The Fire Companies would actually get into fights at the fires and sabotage each other’s as well.

There’s another couple of examples in the National Museum of Scotland on the wall of the staircase leading from the entrance lobby to the Grand Gallery. Took me ages to remember where I’d seen it before.
An interesting story of James Braideood I never knew about the fire of Edinburgh I never learned about this from my school history lessons. You walk past these statues and you pretty much ignore them these days. I didn't know it was in Edinburgh that the first fire brigade was set up.
