I rode the subs with my family in the 60s. Had a great time. The hatched leaked going under the waterfall. We all got free Disney t-shirts. Wouldn't happen today. Miss those great days at Disney with my family.
Loved the Subs as a kid, and then as I was a teenager they were walled up and seemingly gone forever. I moved on from Disneyland, but coming back decades later it's great to have them back.
You have to give the Disney engineers and designers credit to build such a beautiful and complicated attraction. To anyone who has owned a boat...you know how hard it is to maintain, the colors fade, the hull gets stained and from day one water tries to seep into the hull from any crack or weak spot. Yet these Disney engineers come up with ways to keep the coral from fading, to replace the engines with electricity and keep the subs dry and floating. Tremendous achievements. And superior maintenance. Bravo Disney !
We rode the subs yesterday. There was water leaking down the inside of the hull where my 7 year old daughter was sitting, just behind and to the right of the sub "driver" on the Nautilus sub. And then when it was docking a large amount of water dumped down the side from underneath the rivets above her window and the rubber gasket around the driver's bubble. It splashed onto my daughter and the floor inside. I informed the driver and another cast member when we got out but she said it was likely from the a/c. It was way too much water to be condensation from the a/c but I'm no engineer. I do think the subs might be a little leaky due to their age but since they aren't fully underwater nor pressurized it's probably not a huge concern although I hope they investigate the leak.
I remember this ride when I was younger. Right around the time they closed it. It's sad because I remember everything about how it looked. It's one of the few old rides I actually remember.
I was on the last sub that went around the lagoon in 1998. Atlantian Encounter was actually being worked on while the ride was still open. There was a sub tricked out with all the lights and effects. I knew someone in imagineering so I was told what was going on but the sub crew was not allowed over there. It was to be like Alien Encounter but in a submarine. It sounded amazing and terrifying. I think the tag line to the ride was "Save your last breath to scream" Nice job on the video. I wish I would have known how much work went into the new front when I rode Finding Nemo. I would have appreciated it more.
I remember going on the original sub ride when i was really little, and i remember how fantastic the mermaids were. finding nemo just didn't have that element of "wow!" for me, it seemed like a really old ride (even though there's the animation) and i felt that they could have done so much more with it.
At least Disneyland still has subs. Disney world lost its subs. I think 2 were scrapped and one was sunk at one of the private islands owned by Disney. I have to wonder if the one that was sunk is the one that I rode oh so many years ago.
I remember riding this in Walt Disney World in 1993 when I was years old it was called 20 000 leagues under the sea... It sucked and I couldn't wait for it to be over ! My dad fell asleep !
lol it took some research thats for sure! That really is Disneys magic though. Finding incredibly simple, practical ways to achieve things that have amazing visual impact. I was figuring they just ran power cables through the diesel exhaust and air inlet pipes the original sub used. But alas, they are far more creative than that!
At Disneyland, Nemo only has 1 ride. There's a show featuring Crush, but only 1 Nemo ride. As for WDW, They don't have subs anymore, and they also only have 1 Nemo ride.
Captain Brickhead Actually, it's interesting. Epcot's Nemo ride is essentially exactly what you will see on Disneyland's subs, but with real fish involved. You're just riding subs instead of shells. Disneyland has a Little Mermaid ride that uses the clamshell seating that Epcot's Nemo ride uses.
Thanks for the secrets! I will definitely share them with my fellow castmembers :). I didn't know about the atlantis themed sub ride. That would have been cool, but probably a little too old for most of the children that visit the park now a days.
Mutch as I like Atlantis, that movie deserve more of an action ride then a calm submarine ride. Maybe with closed pods that goes underwater a few times, but mainly goes fast in a theme building, just like in Indiana Jones.
If you're concerned about electrified water, don't be. Something was lost in translation in the video. There is no electrified water. The subs are in fact battery powered. The batteries are charged via a series of induction coils they mate to when they pull into the dock. It is true that the power passes through the water, but in the form of electromagnetic radiation, not in the form of electricity which wouldn't work anyway since electricity follows the path of least resistance and would end up skimming the surface. It's essentially the same magnetic induction charging technology that many of us have for our cell phones; an induction pad and an on board rectifier. When the boat stops beside the pad, induction kicks in, power is transferred and the batteries charge. You could put your face between the pad and hull and not feel a thing.. except.. you would be very wet.
There are chargers that plug into the machine room in the rear of each sub. Also, along the track there are IPT chargers which give them an extra boost along the way.
@electrictroy2010. Did you watch the video before you commented?? This isn't a modern navy, this is an amusement park attraction where literally thousands of people ride on daily. The diesel engines in them were from the 50's, hence they were noisy, polluting, required alot of maintenance, and were far from cost effective. They were in fact from the days of diesel engines being dirty.
Wow, love what you are doing with your updates! You are getting really good at the VO too! I live too far from the park to go that often, but every month you take me back. G
Before the update of the ride, there where missile silo doors below the water of the submarine ride near the Matterhorn side. At that time you could see them if you looked close enough you could see them hidden, along with the the door tracks in all the attached coral and such below the water. I have not been back their since the remodel, but if any of you look where mentioned, these HUGE missile silo doors still may be there. At one time you could search the internet for this and find items posted, but for whatever reason, it appears to have been removed or "buried". It would be great if others out there could look for them if they are still there, post a UA-cam video showing them.
I was at Disney in California a few years ago. While walking around. I saw the Subs. And it was being used. This is 2015 or 16. Why are there so many videos about it closing? Isn't it still operating?
@KgrcProductions im not sure if i saw it exactly because i didnt know it was there, but last time i rode, i caught a glimpse of what looked like a woman carved into the stone but then the sub moved past it. then when i saw the serpent i knew it must have been a carving of a mermaid. it was right before you see the stone serpent.
Same here, me and my dad wasted two hours on this ride we could've spent on other rides. But its good for little kids or toddlers just not so fun for older teens or adults or tweens.
yes we are. they had three, count em, three nemo attractions in one year! the musical, the seas, and this. back in the day, a movie was lucky to get one attraction! plus we have turtle talk, block party bash, crush's coaster...will it ever end?! disney needs to think up several original rides, not just use the same concept for all their new ones.
davjan4 i rode on them quote a bit throughout the 1960s. Back then during the summer they had live mermaids, not just anamatronic ones. It was cool in several ways-- the subs are air conditioned and were particularly comfortable when it was hot outside.
VLOGNOSIS The only reason people hate new attractions because it replaces rides they loved not because they're bad. But I agree with some instances like how Tower of Terror shouldn't have been replaced but rides like Stitches Great Escape should be extinct
After my Submarine was decommissioned, (last year I served the Navy 97’) It was donated to Disneyland as they needed two more subs for the expansion. My initials are still scratched into the bottom of the hull. 🙂
Sure that happened....... Tell us the ships name and number. You can look up every Navy Vessel as far back as the revolutionary war and I will look it up A real Navy sub is to big and is not designed for this and is way to big. The Disneyland submarine vessels are actually boats that don’t fully “dive”, but still provide a realistic experience for guests.
@V3roniicashawt Actually, like most Disney rides, it's pretty safe. Each sub fits 20 people on each side and the cast members that run it are trained on what to do in emergency's. They have plans for pretty much any scenario.
ktwesterna problem is,you are basically stuck on the sub if anything happens. If the hatches were open and people let out then you know somebody is bound to slip and fall off,and while the water is shallow it's still deep enough for someone to drown in.
Yeah...I figured on either the old track or some kind of channel. Didn't think of the battery angle tho, heh. Hopefully one doesn't run out and get stuck under the waterfall eh? Or maybe they'd just push it through then let the folks out the top in the cave or something eh?
Let's see...make a ride themed around a movie that few kids or adults liked or theme it around a movie that everyone loves. Building an entire theme ride around Atlantis would have been a major financial failure. Oh, and incidentally, Fantasia was not a "major flop" due to people not liking it. It had trouble because it was released during World War II which made it difficult to distribute. Once WWII was over, the movie was reissued and the profits rolled in. Get your facts straight.
I was totally Mesmerized by this ride as a kid in the 70's ...
Me too. It was the coolest going under like that!
I rode the subs with my family in the 60s. Had a great time. The hatched leaked going under the waterfall. We all got free Disney t-shirts. Wouldn't happen today. Miss those great days at Disney with my family.
They should have done Atlantis, it would have fit well with Tomorrowland and look really good.
The lost Island or continent of Atlantis would have been more exciting and mysterious. Kids would still want to ride on any ride called a submarine.
In my opinion, Atlantis, and Treasure Planet were two of the most underrated films Disney ever made.
love the jii music at the beginning and the makin memories theme at the end.
i remember the first time i was there, the monorail driver let me drive!!! there was limited space so she let us sit in the cabin. it was so cool....
I loved the original ride. It was one of my favorites.
Loved the Subs as a kid, and then as I was a teenager they were walled up and seemingly gone forever. I moved on from Disneyland, but coming back decades later it's great to have them back.
atlantis concept drawing was dope as hell. ride could have made movie an instant cLAssic!
You have to give the Disney engineers and designers credit to build such a beautiful and complicated attraction. Atlantis is a HUGE part of my childhood. That movie holds so many memories.
My grandpa helped construct the subs.
The show building was extended; the entrance and exit used to be next to each other, but there is now an extra cliff separating the entrance and exit.
I was on the last sub that went around the lagoon in 1998. Atlantian Encounter was actually being worked on while the ride was still open. There was a sub tricked out with all the lights and effects. Nice job on the video. I wish I would have known how much work went into the new front when I rode Finding Nemo. I would have appreciated it more.
Wait what! Wow, that sounds absolutely magnificent darn, now I wish that it actually existed.
Yup. My family talked to one, a few years after they closed the ride. She said how it was fun.
I loved this ride when I was a kid (in the early 90s)... went to Disneyland for X-Mas 2013 and actually fell asleep while riding it... it's sooo slow.
I remember going on the original sub ride when i was really little, and i remember how fantastic the mermaids were. finding nemo just didn't have that element of "wow!" for me, it seemed like a really old ride (even though there's the animation) and i felt that they could have done so much more with it.
I just wish it could be "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" themed, like Walt Disney World's submarine ride back in the day.
The sub originally was decorated to be an sub themed of Jules Verne
The song is an instrumental version of "one little spark." Its from the journey into imagination attraction.
Such an underrated film.
That's an interesting arrangement of "Making Memories".
The way the subs are when you board is as far down as they go, they don't go any lower then that.
I still remember bits of it's old version b4 the Nemo themed appeared. :)
I remeber the older ones really fun!
I was their opening day and waited 7 long hours to go on it and i think it was worth it!
If it was the 20,000 leagues under the sea ride, I would ride it...forever.
My boyfriend got to be the first castmember to operate the Finding Nemo Subs with guests on it on opening day. Not a big deal, but it's kinda cool.
I am in love with Nemo too : )
Also, the mermaid allusion is mainly the body and tail. It's also very dark in that area--more so than where the sandy serpent can be spotted.
At least Disneyland still has subs. Disney world lost its subs. I think 2 were scrapped and one was sunk at one of the private islands owned by Disney. I have to wonder if the one that was sunk is the one that I rode oh so many years ago.
The filtration pipe with SEAWATER SUPPLY TL-59 also appeared in the sequel, Finding Dory as an easter egg.
This brings back so many memories 🥰🥰🥰
I remember riding this in Walt Disney World in 1993 when I was years old it was called 20 000 leagues under the sea... It sucked and I couldn't wait for it to be over ! My dad fell asleep !
Did you know that after the waterfall, the subs pass through a black curtain? I saw it one time when the ride broke down and the waterfalls stopped.
good one! like the beatles.
cool!
Fun ride.
lol it took some research thats for sure! That really is Disneys magic though. Finding incredibly simple, practical ways to achieve things that have amazing visual impact. I was figuring they just ran power cables through the diesel exhaust and air inlet pipes the original sub used. But alas, they are far more creative than that!
I saw it in 1978 and I loved it, I wish they had kept it the way it was, call me sentimental
wow i really like these.
The Atlantis one would have been so much better. Nemo has two rides there if I'm correct.
At Disneyland, Nemo only has 1 ride. There's a show featuring Crush, but only 1 Nemo ride. As for WDW, They don't have subs anymore, and they also only have 1 Nemo ride.
Kasatka Tilikum I know about Disney World. I was talking about Disneyland.
Captain Brickhead I wasn't going to assume, since I wasn't sure. In any case, Disneyland only has 1 Nemo ride.
Kasatka Tilikum My assumption is that they had the sub ride. And the normal like ride at Disney World.

Yep would have been a really cool blast!
Why am I being suggested this now 😭😭😭
Mutch as I like Atlantis, that movie deserve more of an action ride then a calm submarine ride. Maybe with closed pods that goes underwater a few times, but mainly goes fast in a theme building, just like in Indiana Jones.
It would have I agree!! But Nemo is awesome too : )
awesome i wanna go to disneyland so bad

cool! cool!
i was sad when they took the original subs out i was 9 yrs old. was pretty happy with the nemo version.
There are chargers that plug into the machine room in the rear of each sub. Also, along the track there are IPT chargers which give them an extra boost along the way.
just went on subs yesterday it was Awesome!!!!
Well, we were there on opening say and we waited 4 hours.
I'm soo glad they went with Nemo.
i somehow predict another casualty at disneyland soon. Its been almost 10 years since the 2003 one.
that was great. i learned some new things i didn't know before.
the opening song is one little spark :'( how I miss that attraction.
this ride is super fun, but i feel so closed in >.
@electrictroy2010. Did you watch the video before you commented?? This isn't a modern navy, this is an amusement park attraction where literally thousands of people ride on daily. MrRobarino I hear the old diesel engines were War Surplus from Germany and still had swastikas in the casting on the engine block?
I don't think they required a lot of maintenance. But it's better this way...
Two of the original subs are now at Castaway cay in Bahamas.
+MsDago1 Wrong ride
You have Disneyland and Walt Disney World confused.
OH MY GOD THANK YOU THAT MOVIE WAS AWESOME IT JUST WASNT PREMOTED ENOUGH (didnt make enough money)
I love thos ride!
I find it funny that you used the theme song for Figment that is only at Epcot in Florida
Thanks TJ
Oh man, I went last year I wanted to get on but the line was super long...
I love your background music
It has really been that long since NEMO opened? WOW!!! And I don't even remember the ride before it.
my dad went on this ride!!!! i wish the old one was there my dad said it was relllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyy fun (mermaids)
Thanks !
D: I would have loved an Atlantis ride! That's one of their best movies!
I like the song at the end. Isn't "Making Memories" ?
i was there the day after it opend that damn line was all the way back to its a small world!!!
Wow, love what you are doing with your updates! You are getting really good at the VO too! I live too far from the park to go that often, but every month you take me back.

as a young girl I loved this ride the mermaids where awesome, what girl didn't want to be ariel?
you are beautiful.
I dunno, where awesome?
Tbh I didn't, I wanted to be genie. I was a weird kid
I wanted to be a squid

1:26 who knows maybe an Atlantis attraction may come soon at Disney world or Disneyland Shanghai or something
been upset all this morning hoping it will not close. I am hoping this is just a rumor.
I love the Atlantis movies :(
me too

LOL......of course plenty gets wet going under the waterfalls, heh. :)
I prefer the Disney World version from way back when Nemo was the Captain.
You are clearly a man of excellent taste
I rode in those original subs in 1967 when I was 7 years old.
Was it cool
yeah was it cool???
davjan4 i rode on them quote a bit throughout the 1960s. Back then during the summer they had live mermaids, not just anamatronic ones. It was cool in several ways-- the subs are air conditioned and were particularly comfortable when it was hot outside.
U where born the same year as my grand dad 58
The original is the best, as is always the case with Disney. They just mess things up these days :(
Wrong!
VLOGNOSIS The only reason people hate new attractions because it replaces rides they loved not because they're bad. But I agree with some instances like how Tower of Terror shouldn't have been replaced but rides like Stitches Great Escape should be extinct
VLOGNOSIS All about quick cash grabs these days at Disney. No magic... All greed. Sadly
Yah, no, it's not because "We don't like change", lots of these "updates" feel like hey are don on the cheap.
One notable exception is the 1980s refurbishment of Fantasyland, I have always loved what they did wih hat.
my grandpa used to work on the ones at disney world
@tippytrain11 your great grandpa is kickass.
same here !! ( :
walt disney would be flipping pancakes in his grave if he saw that

i weent on the 20000 under the sea ride when I was 8 and it scared the shit out of me. In 1996 i wanted to try it again but it was gone.
Cool 😎
