Let’s be honest tho, doesn’t anyone who has to write about themselves in an attempt to “impress” the reader come off a little self-absorbed?! I mean it’s how this whole thing works
It totally depends on the admission officers attitude and mood, you can sound super self absorbed and one officer might like it but the other will find faults.
i really don't see why he can't be self-absorbed. like why is that the college's problem as long as he graduates lol
@Suraj Shits On The Street I mean if they don't disturb the peace I don't see why they couldn't be let in- except in those cases they probably might lol. A businessman without a business probably won't hurt anyone.
@Suraj Shits On The Street Why the hell would a university opt for someone who helps the homeless rather than someone who becomes a celebrity and might bring more traffic...
That seems like a bad business investment

Yeah but reader 2 tho…
Admission Counselor here! 🙋🏽♀️ The second reader needs to go through some extensive implicit bias training as well as learning how to be ethical and professional in their reasoning. Saying that you "come across as self-absorbed" is stated as a fact and not as an opinion and should never even be put in reader notes. Being rude in the notes is not the equivalent of being highly selective. They could've just said " Wish they made more connections to how their business can positively impact society". Reader 1 & 3 are the real MVP's.
Thank you for sharing this! It's great to see someone from the selection side offer their perspective. I think it would be great if schools in the US were more transparent about their selection process, such as offering students the opportunity to see their files, regardless of if they were admitted. It would help to motivate a few people, but also allow a lot of people to feel more at ease and less doubtful of their credentials or fit in a program/institution if they saw how varied the reader's opinion and perspective could be. There might be some bureaucratic red tape or FERPA laws that come into play here, but I think the way Jack was able to see his feedback should be how all academic application processes end.
@@Arri7979 there’s definitely some red tape but not as much as people would think! I think there’s been a widespread misinformation about it being taboo to ask for reader notes. I think this would also make many admissions counselors a lot more accountable and less bias when reading. But there has been a lot of context training in the admission process so we’re headed in the right direction but obviously not enough so here’s to hoping more students ask for their notes!
@@keylasebs - Thank you for responding! That's great to know! I definitely agree that there needs to be more awareness about this process. I'm glad admissions is working to become more context conscious and I agree that some readers would be held more accountable if applicants can see what they wrote. Do you know if you could also request reader notes if you apply at the graduate level? This is all very new to me and I already completed undergrad, so I would love to do this for future applications!
#2 was probably just being racist toward asians. it really comes through strongest in the interview stage according to most studies as asians tend to be untouchable in test scores and GPA. This is known to be the one way affirmative action hurts asians... rejecting qualified students cause "there's too many asians," so they usually go way too hard or show abject discrimination in the interview process. I feel like you should know about this if you're an admissions counselor...
@@fritzjackson4336 oh they 100% were being implicitly bias which is why they probably didn’t notice it or seek to grow out of their unethical way of reading their application. Most newbies know this like me, but people who have been in the industry for years have no intention of learning new reading techniques and great student like this guy get the shorter end of the stick! @@miapearson187 I'm guessing it's to do with people who are home schooled usually not knowing what it feels like to be in a classroom with a lot of other students. Also, they may have chosen to be home schooled because they didn't work well with other kids/ in a classroom environment.

UMich isn't just some random school, it's highly selective. And remember, he still got in, even if reader 2 thought he was self absorbed (and maybe they're right). Lots of applicants to top schools have impressive resumes and space is limited. You have to stand out in a positive way, and the school may have a specific type of candidate in mind to round out their class. That's their prerogative. They are not obligated to admit you. There are plenty of perfectly good schools that will take students with far less impressive resumes than this, even if you decide to write an essay on Clash of Clans.

@@itzjustki3629 To be fair though, were the prompts really asking him to apply his interests to a greater societal problem? If they had and he'd done a poor job doing so, sure. But they didn't, so it's a bit ridiculous to say 'this man is interested in business but didn't take it upon himself to mention how he would like to use his business interest to save the world. Therefore, he is extremely self absorbed.' That's just a ridiculous reach to take from a few essay prompts that weren't even about that. Also, it's a business school application, not an application to a school of social work. If they want him to talk about his interest in helping the community, they need to ask. I swear to god these expectations for 18 year olds are astronomical. So many of us were still just trying to find our way in life.
I think expectations of people in general is astronomical regardless of age. There's just too much pressure in the US (I'm from the US, so that's all I can speak for, but I'm sure this pressure is found in many other countries) to try to always be busy, perfect, confident, and contributing. It is really taxing on mental health and general wellbeing. This mentality is really going to bite us in the butt, if it hasn't already.
Didn’t know you can do this. I was never aware that the admissions department actually lets you go behind the scenes and see how they grade you on your application

Wow you took the criticism so well… I would find out who reader2 is and asked him what he contributes to the society. It’s very unprofessional of him to make assumption on things you did not mention in the essay. I was told that I should only judge based on what’s in the essay and try not to assume anything without solid evidence. Just because you did not say you’ll give back to the society doesn’t mean you won’t, and vice verse.
I think Reader 2 may have had a subtle bias against Asian applicants. A lot of studies have come out showing that admissions officials who interview Asian students give them a comparable personality score to White/Latino/Black applicants. However, admissions officials who don't meet/interview the Asian students give them a lower personality score than White/Latino/Black applicants. Whats the cause of this discrepancy?
A lot of activities that are popular amongst Asian students also tend to be devalued in relation to activities that are popular amongst non Asians. I'm sure the Chinese yoyo program (I honestly don't know what it is) is a legit avenue to build a community and develop leadership skills. I wonder how that would compare to an applicant who is a leader in his/her local parkour group.
This post is not meant to be accusatory against particular admissions officers. Its intention is to acknowledge biases so that we can overcome them.

isn’t the whole point of college apps to show off ur talent and achievements?? and now all of sudden ppl are being called self absorbed for doing exactly what the applications are asking for😭
This is honestly the most valuable college admission video I've seen on youtube. Thank you for posting this!
Aren’t self-absorbed people generally pretty successful because of their confidence and willingness to work hard?? Like...I don’t see the issue. Also, do they expect 17 year olds to have themselves figured out? I assume the admissions officers were just as flawed at 17, they need to chillllll out
but notice that you don't really here about investors who are really good at investing but don't do anything for society. only the people who do good things for society get noticed and the school wants those people
I didn't personally read his essay, but I think the self-absorbed comment was uncalled for. Jack mentioned he may have forgotten to connect his interest to a bigger picture or a more philanthropic perspective, which may be true. But I also agree, he is a teenager writing with a word limit. There's only so much you're aware of at that age and only so much you can say about your future goals in around 500 words. I wouldn't say self-absorbed people are more successful, because that can definitely be a barrier or someone's downfall (someone who is self-absorbed might be difficult to work with or unwilling to collaborate, etc.). But, Jack definitely didn't not come off as self-absorbed in this video, so I honestly think the reader was trying to provide a reason for their bias and it came up short.
I hate how 17 yr olds are expected to accomplish so much for the elite colleges to accept them, no kidding their expectations will probably be satisfied immediately if the students cure cancer or win a noble peace prize, ridiculous. They're just 17/18? life didn't even start for them yet. But then the colleges have the audacity to tell you " just be yourself" like ya sure.

Placing myself here to read if he replies
@@monilark - I'm not the OP, so I can't speak on why he chose Howard over an Ivy League. But, I can say that I have definitely met people who have decided to not go to an Ivy League they applied to for financial, geographical, or social reasons. It definitely depends on the Ivy, but some schools don't offer the best financial aid packages because they know they can admit students who are willing to pay the sticker price. Some people who are unwilling to go to a school just for the name-brand recognition might choose to go to a school that offers them a better financial aid or scholarship package or a school in a more affordable or desirable part of the country (for example, if you want to live in DC after college, Howard seems like a better option over Yale which is in Connecticut). Also, a school's demographics also comes into play. I can see a lot of reasons why someone might turn down an Ivy in favor of somewhere else.
Why tf you have to be so prepared to get in college

College applications are getting ridiculous (I only had to write one or two essays per school when I applied to colleges; one for the common application, and one for the supplemental at each school). Also, what do you expect from a 17 year old? Sure some college applicants are older, but the bulk of college students at major Universities are traditional and straight out of high school. Most 25 year old people have no idea what they want or how the world works, let alone a 17 year old.
They are looking for qualities that can be kindled and mentored beyond just the academics. You can be young and immature but still, show an interest in the world outside yourself. I was a reader for college scholarship essays, and it was enlightening to see the backside of it all. I did not go to U of M, but instead a smaller less prestigious university in Michigan. As a recipient of a scholarship when I was an incoming freshman, I had to read the essays of the incoming freshman who were now vying for the scholarship. There was a defined rubric, but as a STEM major I hadn't been in a traditional essay focused class for years and found there is still definitely subjectivity to the grading. If this man wants to be selfabsorbed in high school and do everything for him and focus on him and his future before branching out into bigger things in society THATS OKAY! Focus on getting big for you and your family and loved ones. They expect everybody to be talking about ending world hunger and poverty. When you haven’t even done it for yourself. Sad that you do ALL THESE THINGS in high school and they summarize you into something so short of who you truly are. I was ASB athletics commissioner, Christian club president, RSVP club president, Track/XC captain and CIF competitor, student ambassador, student council member. My recommendations were the mayor of Anaheim (where Disney is), and the superintendent of my high school district. I had water bottle refill stations installed at school AND had lunch donated to the homeless at the end of the day instead of having it Thrown out. I had a 3.8GPA with honors and AP classes on top of sports. I did all this. And I got accepted to 2 cal states and no universities. I got one award. National honors society. That I had to PAY for. Out of pocket. AND during senior award night they gave me 1 award. The NHS award (which I paid for) and they pronounced my name wrong. I refused to go up. I went to get my paper later after the ceremony and they said they already trashed it. I went to community, dropped out, and now investing in real estate and I at 19 years old started making 20 an hour. Don’t let schools determine who you are.

It shows that college admission depends so much on luck
I think the problem was the lack of community involvement. An important part of your application is to show how you have utilized your passion to give back to your community. This really does include volunteer hours where there’s no certificate at the end. This is something you should remember if you’re intending to apply to graduate school as well.
The readers are human and so they come with personal biases. So it depends on who looks at your application. That's just life.
I graduated summa cum laude from a reasonably well-regarded state school 12 years ago. These days, I don't know if I would be admitted to any college with even semi-competitive admissions. It is crazy how much they expect kids to do these days! Competitive swimming, research, teaching assistant, founding and leading clubs and teams, all while earning excellent grades? When the heck do they expect students to eat and sleep?
Great video dude. It’s crazy to see just how random admissions can be! Regardless, you worked crazy hard to get into Michigan and I hope you’re killin it in college
:( u seem like such a smart and good person, sorry u had to go through that
I'm very curious to see what mine says...I got in early admission but after hearing about your resumé I'm shocked I even got in at all. I took a risk and wrote my commonapp essay about failure and not how I overcame it, but how I'm working to move forward. It was kind of negative so I'm curious as to what they thought about it. I think the academic essay I wrote was really good, though, because I wrote about RC and how it would build upon my exchange year in high school and will prepare me for my dream job. Anyways, thanks for sharing! Very interesting to see what the admissions readers think
This took some courage to publish. Superb insight into an opaque admissions process.

Great video, great insight. Are you a resident of Michigan? Do you know if it is more difficult or easier for out of state applicants to get into U Mich Ross? Thank you.
Dear High School Seniors: don’t watch videos like this! Just try to chill and don’t worry, you’ll end up at a school and everything will be fine. Sincerely, a college freshman.
Dear High School Seniors: Go to trade school or enlist in the military if your major isn't engineering or science. Don't waste your time, go learn real skills and get real experience. Sincerely, a university graduate.
*me, a high school senior* mission failed, we’ll get em next time
@@MajorGeneralVeers If everyone went to trade school, then trade school would become diluted and you'll have a bunch of people without jobs.
@@proton8689 I don't mean everyone, my belief that university is only worth it of you study science and engineering. If you're not good at those subject you'll be doing yourself a huge favor by taking on vocational work.
The country needs technicians and engineers more than it needs left wing artists and snobbish academics.
@@MajorGeneralVeers
Your beliefs are wrong because people who do study science and engineering still can't find a job. Or they still have huge debts. Same with medical doctors.
Also, scientists and engineers would still be left-leaning. Opps. The more educated someone is, the more left they tend to be.
what were the extracurriculars that they did not mention
also thanks for this video !! :)
High school student ambassador and community service
Jack Liu Thanks for the answer. It will help me a lot.
no, I doubt that sneaker reselling and esports are uncommon in applications; in fact I’d assume quite the opposite. They just don’t elaborate for themselves a clear contribution to community or society. But I guess if you’re going into business that’s really not that relevant, is it :>
the fact you think esports are common confuses me cause apparently i stood out for my esports club i made (the first in my school) which got tons of funding and support due to how i ran it and advertised it
KA0S mate you’re talking about just your school
I don't think either of these are common for people to mention when applying for a university. These might be common to you, but from an admissions perspective, I highly doubt most people would mention something like this because they may not see it as academically relevant, but in actuality I think it helps an applicant stand out.
A lot of the people reviewing these applications are not in the same age group as most of their applicants. These two things could be extremely uncommon to them and I think Jack's critique about how he probably could have explained something like esports and it's contribution better in his application is valid. I can definitely see how both of these could benefit certain communities or society (way for people to conduct entrepreneur endeavors without the need for an advanced degree (sneaker reselling), a way for individuals from different backgrounds to connect via a virtual landscape (esports), but I think they just need to be explained.
8:15 uh, honestly I think the reason it was deemed questionable was because it seems like you were stretching yourself thin and didn't personalize the effects in which esports has impacted you. College admissions officers can tell when a student is trying to overachieve to the point they do extracurriculars that are not meaningful to them. It has absolutely nothing to do with hoe common the extracurricular is.
The Mich logo on your Columbia® jacket is sooooo mind-boggling.
Guowei H why😆? Universities have branded shit with labels all the time
TomCook1993 right? I’m a grad student and the college I go to has branded Nike stuff. 🤷🏻♀️
@@allisoncarr9998 I think the person is talking about "Columbia" being interpreted as Columbia University being on the same shirt as michigan university
I am so glad that we don’t have to do these 5 essays to enter uni in Australia. There’s lots of different ways to enter but writing essays is not one of them.
Went to U of M, so did my brother. I always wondered what my file said lol. Got me thinking if I should start asking around or not.
congrats! i got deferred and just hoping i'll get in with regular decision
