  • Did you know the Anet A8 has no power switch, and its power input cable is a potential safety issue? Well, here's just the thing for that. Today we’re printing and installing a power supply cover, along with a proper power socket with a power switch and a fuse!
We’ve got to make this 3D printer safe before we can proceed with other upgrades!
Huge thanks to Mark Corliss (Corliss Media 2.0) for generously covering the cost of the Anet A8 used in this episode. We'll be using it in an upcoming series of episodes where we install the Klipper firmware!

The Klipper project is 3d-printer firmware. There are two parts to this firmware - code that runs on a micro-controller and code that runs on a host machine. The host software does the work to build a schedule of events, while the micro-controller software does the work to execute the provided schedule at the specified times.

*Note to those who make it to the end:* Starting around the 17 minute mark, there are weird, glitchy flashes lasting for about 30 seconds. I edit with iMovie, and preview it there prior to export. But iMovie failed me on this one. First time in 40-some-odd videos. Lesson learned: Watch the video in iMovie to verify flow and content; watch the video AGAIN after export for QC. Making quality videos is hard work! *_If I didn't like you all so much I wouldn't put so much effort into this!_* 😘🤣

Great video once again Bryan. Your electrical looks nice and clean and instructions were very clear. The case looks fantastic too! Looking forward to more videos of you upgrading your A8 as well as your review of the Klipper firmware. Thanks for sharing Bryan!!!!

Thanks, Thierry. Watching and listening to the A8 with Klipper on it as it prints a part sounds different from anything else I've ever heard out of my printers. I'm glad you liked the video! 😊

Great video BV3D. That is a sweet looking cover. I have an upgraded PSU so no good for me but other people will find it useful for the stock PSU. See you in the next one

Thank you, Scalda! The form factor of the stock PSU can vary quite a bit, which is why there seem to be so many of these things on Thingiverse. Mine was a quick rehash of other ideas I found while looking for one I liked, but it's so similar to a lot of the other ones that I don't think I'll add to the noise by uploading it to Thingiverse. 🙂

Thank you, Richard! And thanks for pointing out the weirdness with the video during the actual cover installation. I'm not sure if I'll have to re-upload the video or not; if I do, there's no way to transfer these comments over. UA-cam doesn't let you replace the video file for an upload. 😕

Hi Mike! It's been suggested that I post this one on Thingiverse, so even if you don't have an A8, you can download the STL and get some ideas for designing one of your own. It should be up on Thingiverse tomorrow. I'll also add a link in the description once it goes live.

Hi Mark! I honestly didn't think anyone would be interested in the design given the vast number of A8 PSU covers, but I'll go ahead and upload it tomorrow. I think I have one or two things I want to tweak on it. Thanks again for your support! 👍

    Awesome! To answer your question...
I think (as I did it myself) the A8 Kit is a great way to get a DEEP understanding of a standard cartesian style printer. Though technically it was my second printer (M3D - original from Kickstarter being my first) I learned SO much more than I thought I would with this kit. While there are a few safety concerns to deal with, I think it is a good kit for ALL levels of experience to use and learn more from.
The power supply cover was looking outstanding... I too had many difficulties finding one that was already made and that would fit. After I upgraded the PSU to a 30a, I again found myself in the same position. I stumbled on this one: www.thingiverse.com/thing:2876467 that works great for me as having a rock-solid full wrap coverage. Had to play with it to get small switches to be installed, but now seeing your video, I may revisit the covers to get the added functionality!
Thanks again for a great video!
