- In this tutorial video, I show how to install a power switch on the Anet A8 3D Printer. I show the step by step process which is ultimately broken down into 3 things:
1) Preparation/Parts Needed - 0:09
2) Wiring - 4:57
3) Installation process - 8:00
Here is a link to the power switch I use:

Thank you to Puddlefist for the amazing power cover design from Thingiverse. The link above will take you to his design.
None of the links above are affiliate and I not payed in anyway.
I just want to help others with there 3D printers.
I googled this and there are a bunch of idiots posting pics.... with no real clear solution. Thank You for this video.
thank you for this very clear and organized demonstration! i was completely clueless on how to install one of these rocker switches until watching this video!
Good tutorial, but users take note... sometimes the switch mechanism is installed the other way around on these units. As you look at the back of your unit, notice the arrangement of the four terminals at the bottom. There are a pair of terminals which are spaced closer together (with relation to the black plastic divider running between them), and a pair of terminals spaced further apart with relation to the divider. With your unit oriented the way Joseph shows it for the bulk of the video (with the Ground terminal on top), are the CLOSER-spaced switch terminals on the LEFT, as in the video? If so, you're good to go, wire it as shown in the video.
But if your CLOSER-spaced switch terminals are on the RIGHT, then your finished wiring job should NOT look the same as in the video. If that is the case, your small jumper wires should be crossing over from left to right, because those jumper wires are supposed to connect to the closer-spaced terminals. If you are iffy in your wiring skills and electrical knowledge, or if any of this confuses you, do some Googling ("how to wire a Rocker Switch Power Socket Inlet Module Plug"), look at some pictures and diagrams online, do some research, until you are confident on how to make proper connections.
Thanks brother. Great tutorial my friend. I have two Anet A8's. I bought one of those switches from Amazon fora $8 and I got a cheap $3 one. There both from China of course but the $3 One lasted about 5 clicks and broke. I just got another one like this one but I never had it hooked up for the light on the switch to work for the printer I already have this switch on. I was missing one of the jumpers. But now I can go back and wire them up both up the right way. ☺ Thanks Buddy.
That is awesome! I really enjoy having the switch on the Anet A8.
Joseph Guernsey me too my friend. I also like your cover better than the one I have. I'm printing two like yours as we speak lol.
Great guide, thanks for posting this. Instructions were easy to follow and steps were described well. Finished adding a switch to mine as well thanks to your video!
Matt S glad it helped!
Wow I have watched a ton of tutorials on how to wire up this very switch and this is the first tutorial that did not leave me confused.
I did get the switch hooked up and working but I wanted the switch light to come on.
Now I know how to hook everything up right.
I did do an oopss on the fuse part I put it in regularly I did not know it went into that plastic part then into the holder.
I am so going to wire mine up the rest of the way. :)
PinBallReviewer I'm so glad it helped!
Thanks for the excellent tutorial! Both in content & execution. I appreciate your help. I had already printed the same mount when I found your video, so, thanks to Puddlefist, as well!
I look forward to more videos!
Jeff
Thanks, glad it helps. I like a lot of Puddlefist's designs!
Yeah, I've got a folder for just his stuff! :)
Thank you soooooo much!! This was so helpful. You explained everything so well, made it easier to understand.
Glad it is helpful, that is why I made it.
I found the screwdriver that came with the Anet to be the incorrect size for most of the screws and used a different one that was better sized instead. Did you notice the same? Thanks for the video!
The tools that came with the printer are lower quality. If you got better tools I would use them!
O my god Thank you so much sir very very useful for me this video sir thank you so much sir thank a lots God bless you sir
You should be using fully insulated terminals on the switch👀 metal ends could bend while fiddling with the unit and touch each other🙈
GamingLegends Thank you for the advice, I will definitely do that from now on. I’m always learning, I’m no electrical expert. Again thank you.
@@josephguernsey3110 can you just cover it with electrical tape or even kapton tape? will kapton tape fully insulate the metals?
@@AK-kr3uy Shrink tube is the easiest and cleanest way
Great video, very helpful. Haha the background music reminded me of some old school Lucas Arts point and click adventure games with the old school sound card.
Jordan Pool thanks man, glad you like it
Thank you so much 👏 sir O my God ... thank you so much 👏 sir very very useful for my self this video thank you so much sir thank a lots
bought the very same switch in germany and the only description I found was yours
Really wish there were more videos on this channel! Really useful Info!
Do you have the diagram but with switch of two pines?
THANKS :D I do it on my Tronxy P802m !
Hi Joseph, Thanks a lot for this very informative tutorial. I have followed step by step and the switch works well with the exception that the red light stays on all the time. Do you have any idea?
I not sure without seeing your switch
Thank you very much! You're my savior!
Glad I could help!
Great tutorial, I will use it myself now. But I will add shrink tubes around the crimps, as it will make it a bit safer. So there will not be live voltage the anyone, including myself, can touch by accident.
Anders Jackson Glad it helps. That's a excellent idea to add shrink tube.
Thanks. I just completed my switch installation using a box I cut to size for my Prusa i3 clone. The power switch only had three legs, not four, as you showed. The toggle does not light up. I have ordered another switch to have the LED light on the switch. Thanks again.
Aburrido
Great video man, just got mine installed
Roth Wilson glad it helped.
Hi, What is the problem for anet A9... When the initial operation, the extruder is directed to the opposite side to the end and continues for a while the engine rotates even when the extruder reaches the end ... The same applies to the surface ... Also, the z direction motor works one and the other does not work .. Note that I almost checked the connections All are correct
Thank you sir
Great tutorial!
Thank you!! Hope it helps.
It helped me SO much!
Yes, a great tutorial
Just one thing, use heat shrink tubes on the crimps to isolate them. Just makes it a bit easier to avoid shortage.
Thank you, I appreciate your advice! I'm learning too.
Me too. We all do learn all the time. :-)
I will use your video to connect my switch to the Anet A8 that I have. Except I will have the shrink tubes.
My switch light is always on, regardless if I turn it on/off - any ideas? I didn't bother with the clips, just soldered the wires and wrapped with heat shrink tubing
I should of mentioned, the printer turns on/off fine, just the light is always on
@@topcat5366 Hi Topcat, Did you get any solution for your problem as I have exactly the same.
I had the very same problem and was able to solve it: Make sure that the red button is installed with the "1" at the top, and the "0" at the bottom (you can push the button out and spin it). Only then connect the wires as per tutorial. This will make it work properly👍
Thank you Joseph Guernsey, I did this to my Tronxy and it worked great :)
Lee Tookey Np glad it helped.
what fuse you use i have a tronxy x5 AC 110/220V + - 15% DC OUTPUT: 12V 20A
perfect tut. this is what I'll be doing later today. thanks a ton
Glad it helped.
Great video man very clear!! Now how is that filament working for you? I have to print at 189 Degrees, otherwise is messy ,
do you have settings for it?
The red one by the way is much more reliable in my experience. This for sharing!!
You are using the wrong crimper for insulated wire terminals. You are also doing it the wrong way when crimping. The solid side should be on bottom and the divit side on top. The whole reason for that is when the round bottom pushes up and in on the sides of the metal , the diviter pushes on the split metal top and drives it in. Insulated wire connector crimpers are more flat on both top and bottom.
Very usefull tutorial. Thanks Joseph.
Thank you man! Glad it helped!
Great video! I do have one newb question for you though: what gauge should I get for the connectors?
Glad you its helping. I used Utilitech 22-16 gauge connectors. Got a 20 pack from Lowe's for about $3.
I noticed there is a V1 & V2 files when I downloaded the cover from thingiverse..What is the one you use? Whats the difference between the 2 files?
I thinks its just the text vs no text on the part.
22-16 AWG terminal connectors?
Ok so I have an odd problem the light works now but it is on regardless of the switch being On or Off do I have a defective light or just not hooked up right?
I am going to do a video on it and upload it.
I just had the same issue, some switches have that as a feature to help you locate the switch even when it's turned off (I bought from a different link than the one in the description). Scared me at first as I thought I'd done it wrong, too
Oh ok phew.
If the light goe's out I will get another.
Although I may get another as I do not really want my Switch lit up all the time I only want it lit when the power is actually turned on.
I'll suggest adding heat shrinking tubing at least where the switch location the female faston connectors are really close 6:10
Careful, some power supplies are reversed so instead of calling out side of unit and using non-standard colored wires for America the annotations should be “Live” (his brown wire), “Neutral” (his blue wire) and “Ground” (his greenish yellow wire). These are labeled L, N and ground symbol.
I just converted mine and in checking the power cable that came with the printer from the plug to the wires found the hot pin is connected to the blue wire not the brown and the neutral is connected to the brown wire. So if you follow the printer instructions of 1=HOT (brown), 2= NEUTRAL (blue) and 3= GROUND (yellow) you will be reversing the connections witch will be dangerous. Check before powering up.
@@omaro749 Yikes! I just did this mod to mine and mine was brown=hot blue=neutral and yellow=ground thankfully. For anyone who doesn't know, in the US if wired correctly the wide blade side of a plug or outlet should be "Neutral" and the narrow side is "Line" (or "Hot"). If wired incorrectly you'll have voltage on bits that shouldn't, relative to ground, even when your switch is 'off.' It's things like this that make me cringe when these kits leave mains wiring up to consumer. (Of course it is also how they limit liability and cost. /Sigh)
You should shrink wrap (or at least use electrical tape) on those connectors to prevent them from ever touching and starting a fire or killing you!
aztecalarm appreciate the advice, but I feel it is safe since the connections are spaced out and the printer is stationary.
What fuse to use? Is 1,5A enought? I have 220V. 240W/220V = 1,1A? (P/U=I?) Thank you.
Jakub Hažmuka I used the fuse that came with the switch. I'm not a master electrician so I'm not sure what you need.
The voltage is usually 240V, so yes, a 1A-1.5A slow fuse would work. Even a 1A-1.5Afast would work, just try it out.
Excellent
Nilson Souza thank you
Joseph Guernsey! Hi! How to buy this blue piece?
Nilson Souza I actually printed the cover with the Anet A8 from thingiverse. It is linked in the description. I don't sell any parts unless I design them myself.
can you solder on the connections instead?
I'm sure you can, I just prefer plug on connections. (Also I'm not the best solderer, I'm still learning how.)
yes
You can, but usually the crimping is better, and then you don't need to solder.
If you do a bad solder, your installation might come bad (bad solder will get hot and then melt the contact).
A bad crimp will not hold if you pull the wire, and turn bad later. Solders can turn bad later.
But yes, you can solder OR crimp. Don't do both, that might even be illegal in same places.
Great Tutorial. Thank You.
Glad it helped
Thank you!
My power switch has 5 connections instead of 7 what’s the difference?
Jordan Sandall I'm not sure without seeing it
I think he has the new type which only has 3 conections on the switch
On/off jumped together?
5 wires mean your red switch has no led light, that's the difference,3 prongs on plug,2 prongs on switch just on & off
The 7 connections have two switches, so you can switch of the neutral and live (blue and brown). But the one with 5 only have one switch, so you can only switch of the phase. Which usually isn't any problem, as it still will break the circuit.
i never knew Matthew mcconaughey was into 3d printing..
Thanks I guess lol
Power Supplah
It's AC voltage, it should always be insulated or protected, those connectors can easily touch when you remove the cover etc and the fuse wont help. And others doing this mod could be put on serious danger! At least warn them that they now have very dangerous exposed wiring in their printer.
Yet it is still an upgrade in safety from the way this printer ships as standard :o I would really have preferred to see a totally enclosed cover for the switch though.
Yep. I used insulated terminals for this on my own. If I had nothing but non-insulated I think I would've soldered everything straight up and done away with all the terminals in the first place. (Or maybe mold on RTV or epoxy after)
At the green and yellow wire - earth, not neutral , the blue is neutral whatever you do, if you do not know what you are doing and are not a qualified electrician, do not use this video... use the link>>>>www.pat-testing-training.net/articles/wiring-plugs.php or the UK and RSA but always check if in the USA/Canada depending on which state you live in what is compliant there.
Terrible tutorial if you have a different rocker switch. The guys doesn’t tell you what you are connecting to what on the switch... I can wire a plug. It’s that damn switch that I need info about.
Josh Tiel this tutorial is aimed for people with the Anet A8 and the same switch I use in the video. Hope you figure out what your doing.
Awesome video. Thanks for the step by step. Very helpful.
