I would look at VENTRAC, MOWER, RAKE, BUCKET, STUMP GRINDER, ETC ALL FOR DOING HIS PROJECTS. OLD SKID STEER FOR CAN BE FOUND FOR LESS THAN 10K. My Toyota skid has less than 900 hours, used for snow in Chicago. Gold luck, just went thru this decision myself
Tracked loader for building/clearing then compact 4wd tractor for maintaining the property. IMHO your driveway needs base under it. Then the crushed rock on top of it. The way to keep from plowing the gravel off is height feet on the snowplow.
I used to plow snow with a plow even with feet, didn't make a difference. If you plot it you're going to have it in the grass there is no way around that, since most gravel drives are very uneven and not level. Thanks. But I agree with the first part on machines, no doubt. Take care
Skid steer, sounds like he is doing mostly loader work besides firewood. Dragging trees backwards in a skid steer isn't ideal but it can be done, personally I cut logs into 8ft lengths and pack them out with forks and process them where needed.
A Skid Steer is a top consideration, thanks. My only worry is that its so sandy here, I'd need tracks on it which will be more costly. Also I know a skid steer is fine for plowing- but we have a really long driveway almost 2,000 feet. I guess 2 passes with the skid steer would work.
Our soil is pure sand also and it does fine until you do a lot of digging, I have some videos on my channel if you are interested in seeing how tires perform. I am in Northern Minnesota and do quite a bit of snow removal and driveway maintenance myself. The machine I have is a Bobcat 873 which can be had well within your budget and si comparable to kappers T650. Good luck, subbed to you!
Thanks for the great feedback! I have tie down loops on my T650 and thought about making a 'pulling' implement for it to pull things with it. Lots of good info to digest, thank you!
An old tractor with no fancy computer or sensors that you can repair yourself and will accept any brand accessories without rendering the machine useless is the best thing for a homestead.
Kapper, I don't see a new peice of equipment, whether tractor/loader, skidsteer, or mini excavator as a viable investment with only $20k to invest. A tractor/loader with a three point hitch is the most cost effective starting point. I would be looking at $35k as a starting investment. A tractor with 4 wheel assist, cab, loader, heater, and a three point with down pressure is what I would start with. Everyone will say skidsteer but the up front cost is too high as you really want a new one and one with the bells and whistles is going to be big bucks. Used skidsteers are really beat up as most contractors wear them out before they trade them in, I know I was a contractor! A three point blade with hydraulics tilt and down pressure can grade his driveway, pulling in the gravel that gets pushed to the side from plowing and driving. Ditching a couple of pipes to drain water from low spots is also possible with the blade. Snow plowing, he has a plow on the truck that can be adapted to use on the tractor. Question is what horse power does he need, I would be looking at 55 to 85 horse power. Also don't forget the crankcase heater as it gets really cold up north diesel fuel has a tendency to gel up there and he might want to put a touch of kerosene mixed in to stop gelling. Hope this is useful.
Great info thanks for the feedback. Yeah a tractor setup is a 'jack of all' but not necessarily and Ace of any, LOL. But I did it for many years with just a tractor. We'll see how it goes, but I think he's looking for used, which may be a challenge. Thanks man have a good weekend
Being a homestead I would suggest a 60 hp 4x4 tractor with a loader. In my opinion there is more than enough attachments for the jobs you named. If you don't want to buy multiple attachments rent one for a job that you aren't planning on using very often. That should save in a lot of cost. I suggest a grapple, a bucket, tiller, brush hog and grader box to start with
Kap, the budget always is a major factor. I know he had a tractor but I'd still start with a tractor (cabbed) and one that's dependable. Consider how close/far a trustworthy tractor dealer is (parts/maintenance). A shelter for the tractor (not a necessity but...). Box blade, forks, and heavy duty landscape rake. The rake and box blade can do major work on roads. Chains, 2 sets with hooks, dependable chain saw, and plenty of dependable hand-held working tools (an advantage since he's young). I know I jumped all over the place but he needs to do it in small-bites. I recommend a tractor over skid steer (co$t). Enjoyed full video and thanks for collaboration w/ Homsteader.
I know I'm a few years late to the party,.... I would have kept the traktor and still bout a new piece of equipment. Maybe build a cab for the old traktor too.
simple answer is you need a 4 wheel drive tractor with a cab, you cannot use a skidsteer to haul logs or firewood, you cannot use a bobcat to garden with, lot more attachments for a tractor, my uncle had a circular saw for cutting firewood, a trenching bucket, a wood loader and a log splitter for his tractor besides farm implements get Kapper to sell you his smaller tractor-perfect for your homestead, your welcome Kapper ps I had an old International like yours and it was expensive to fix, my bucket was hydraulic but it was a two wheel drive and cabless, so like you I got rid of it
Thanks for the reply but I have to politely disagree. The skid steer can actually haul bigger and heavier logs, you can also garden with a soil conditioner or skid steer tiller, and the number of skid steer attachments now is mind boggling. But you are right though I have thought about offering to sell our Megatron 2.0 because it sure could be a perfect fit on a budget! Thanks.
Joe for his budget he can get into a 5-6 year old Kubota B3350 with a cab heat air and radio hydrostatic 3 range transmission and a loader and bucket with the 3rd function in the 700 hour range for $21,000
Kapper Outdoors it is a 4 cylinder turbo diesel and yes it is 33 hp its width is 53.7 inches but what he can get is a backhoe attachment at a later date and he does have a budget to stick to
20k is gonna be a challenge to find a nice piece of equipment no matter what they choose. Best of luck to them! I think an older backhoe might be doable for their budget and their needs.
You can definitely find something in the 20k range if you are patient and do your research. Check my purchase on my channel. Massey Ferguson 1754M with Grapple and bush hog. 190 hrs.
I bought a Mahindra Max26 XLT TLB package. Pretty happy with it. Does nothing as good as a Mini-Ex or a Skid loader but does it all. Wouldn’t mind a higher lift capacity on the loader though.
Only place to start is with a loader tractor with a 3 point hitch and pto. It will handle most of the work on the home stead. Warning buy as new as you can because mfg's stop making parts for the old equipment. You can't find parts for them to keep an old tractor running. As for the carpet. if you have sand soil the carpet helps keep the gravel from sinking into the sand. Where do you think all your gravel went? Normally to build a road on sand is geo tec fabric first, rip rap next, then 2" down with 1" down gravel on top. As you know, roads are expensive to build and maintain.
Good info thanks. Yeah, i'm really curious about the carpet thing too and the driveway. Their's may not have been built property, often on farms and land some people will just throw down some gravel on a path and call it good. But if he gets some equipment he'll at least have a fighting chance. Thanks man
Here is a scenario I debated for my twenty one acres in the Pacific Northwest. With 25K down I got an LS MT5.73. 73 hp cab, 4x4 , 3 rear remotes, all bells and whistles. With that, I can add a PTO aux power pack and run skid steer 24gpm flow rate. THEN you can use skid steer connect attachments as well as powered implements on the front as well as all the ag versatility an ag tractor offers. 84 month. Promo on 25 k down is less that 350 a month. Just a thought. Oh it has 20 speed forward and reverse, laid out as a 3x4 12 forward reverse with 2x4 8 gears as a creeper. Also is power shuttle and thumb clutch. Loader lift is about 3600 lbs, wallenstien can make a custom subframe to add its extend a hoe backhoe with 11.4’ digging depth. So, this setup would offer 3 machines in one. Also has 6 year warranty.
I'm sure it could possible work for many. Some can/can't do the 25k and some can't do the payments. It seems like LS is becoming a little more popular in certain areas. Good luck, hope it serves you well! Thanks for the info.
Always start with a tractor you have so many scenarios going on there my tractor has a skid steer quick attach bucket so you can use skid steer attachments I have a plow forks grapple and bucket for the front and the three point hitch attachments are usually cheaper like a box blade or York rake back hoe attachment for the rear great all around machine skid steeres are great as well and have better pick up power where the arms are closer to the machine and yes you can easily put a plow on the front I wouldn’t just use a bucket to do the driveway toss a plow on and geter done good luck Napa Mike 👍
Good info thank you. Although the tractor can't really take advantage of most hydraulic skid steer attachments. Many are too heavy and require constant hydraulic flow, and pretty much all tractor 3rd functions are just for things like the grapple with a limited open/return diverter. But you are right about being very diverse with all the stuff you got, you can do about anything. This will be an interesting challenge. thanks.
Canada here: There isn't really one ideal tool to do everything, so don't try as you'll make too many compromises. First, I'd budget for some excavator rental, but plan the jobs out ahead of time to get the best use out of it. Personally, I'd keep the plow truck for now as you'll likely get very little for it. It's comfy , quick and cheap to run. Chains would help too, and maybe some UA-cam time to figure out how not to scrape gravel (guessing some shoes to set level?) For 'farming', not sure given budget. CTL's whilst flexible are expensive to buy, fuel and maintain and an old one will be demanding of time. Skidsteers are hopless in soft or muddy ground so don't bother. A backhoe would do a lot, but you can't run a PTO for mowing etc. So a tractor still seems the best for now, but bigger (and cabbed) may be better as tougher, can do jobs faster and flexible for implements. As others have said, make sure it has a bobtach style bucket if possible (or have it converted). The bucket can help clear the deep snowfall when the truck struggles. NB I've owned acreage and worked in construction but not an expert, just my thoughts having struggled with a too small tractor! We got more done with one month of rental equipment than 4 years with the wrong tractor! Good luck.
Used skid steer for 20K will be very, very used and you will have only a used bucket. Skid steer attachments are expensive. No PTO. You would have high flow hydraulics for extra price. Used skid steers usually have seen heavy use at the 20K price range. For 20K you can buy a new Kioti, or TYM tractor in the 25HP range plus a box blade and maybe a snow blade for the loader. Add another 4 to 5K for a Kubota. Branson is good. Used skid steer in the 30K range would get you a better machine.
If i went with skid steer i have to make sure the right track was on it cause not every track is made for snow if the right track was not on it.. then i have to buy the right track for those winters days up there... that would cut into the cost of the other attachments... so i would have to say although the skid steer would be the easiest and the most used piece but i think i go with cabbed tractor with attachments
I think a backhoe, if you can find one with a removable hoe that you can swap for a box blade or a bush hog and with which you can pull a tree or trailer. So in the Spring/ Summer you can dig with the backhoe and put your culverts/ditches in and in the winter maybe you can find a pull plough to go in place of the backhoe attachment. Walt from afleetcommand can do a lot with a tractor which is basically what a backhoe is. Camerata says backhoes make work too slow for him but you only have 20 acres that you are on all the time. Suggestion; invest in a heavy machinery mechanics class at your local educational establishment or watch Western Truck and Tractor and OneLonleyFarmer on UA-cam.

A small tractor without a cab would be cheaper but gotta get a few more attachments like a box blade, mower, and front end loader. Both good choices with a ton of versatility.

thanks for the input, it will be a challenge finding the right thing.
skiid great for building and tractor is for maintenance !
Great point!
For me a tractor would be my first buy then an excavator later on. Thank you.
Good info, thanks for the reply. Have a good one!
Sounds like they put the carpet there to help with washout..... and he needed to get rid of it lol
A lot of folks are saying buying a can tractor in the 20k range can be tough. I say if you do your homework and be patient it can be done. I just posted one on my channel, a Massey Ferguson 1754M with cab and with Grapple and Bushhog for 23400. 190 hrs.
Skid steer, Kerry will love it!
yeah it will be a tough call! If I could get him to bump his budget up, that would help! LOL
@@kapperoutdoors time and money will always determine
Older John Deere 110 has a removable hoe and you can find them with aftermarket cabs or even an older Kubota tlb
Thanks man have a good one
I vote for one of each 😁😁
LOL that would be sweet!
Tractor w/cab, box blade and loader......going to be tough at 20 grand.....
yeah going to be a challenge for sure. maybe after some homework he can up his budget a little. As long as he doesn't get an orange tractor, LOL!
tractor is much cheaper with many more attachment options that is also much cheaper.
yes no doubt the tractor is a swiss Army knife :) Thanks
