Fitbit Sense 2 review: what happened

  • Fitbit has released their new Sense 2 smartwatch which is essentially the same as the original Fitbit Sense watch, but with some improvements. However, it seems like Fitbit (read Google) messed up this time around which makes it hard to recommend this watch. Instead I recommend buying a Fitbit Sense watch. But of course many issues that I talk about in the video are software related that can be fixed by Fitbit in the future.

It feels like one that would be on a channel with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. I'm shocked at how few you actually have. Agreed with you wholeheartedly. Had the sense for 18 months before it died and would not take a charge. I loved it although it was quite expensive to have only lasted 18 months. So I took a chance on the sense 2
    Completely disappointed for all the things you said and returned it immediately! I now have the galaxy watch 5 and I am astonished with its capabilities. And guess what, it was less expensive too. Thank you Samsung ❤️

      Pixel Watch owner here, 24hr battery life is when you wear the watch and don't even look or use it.
      If you actually make use of its features, it's about 12-14 hours before recharging it. If you don't recharge, you are screwed if you want to use it as a vibrating morning alarm or collect sleep data.

    Hi-thank you for your excellent review. Now that it is a year later would you recommend the Fitbit Sense-the ECG feature and is it reliable? Also would the step count be more reliable now on the watch. Is the Fitbit versa 4 best to get, or is the ECG and stress management addition of the Fitbit Sense impressionable for what it does, to buy over the Versa 4. I am needing your expertise a year later on which of the two to buy. Thank you.

    • @RyansTechMedia
      @RyansTechMedia  5 днів тому +1

      Glad you find this helpful! The step count is alright but nothing has changed since its release. As far as ECG and stress management, based on my experience and working with cardiologists I can tell you the ECG is a very nice feature, but I wouldn't call it reliable and currently that applies to all smartwatches. The wrist is a very noisy area! If budget is the concern you wouldn't miss much but not having the ECG and the more useful stress management features.

    Good video!
    After couple months having the Sense 2 (with previous experience with Versa 2 and Sense), I'm really disappointed. There's been a whole slew of issues with it - it seems to have been release just half-baked and Fitbit is not putting adequate effort into fixing and polishing the experience. After migration from Fitbit Pay to Google Wallet, my payments are not accepted at merchant terminals. There's some very weird behavior of the HR measurement. It seems to work decently on the watchface but during sports activities I often get just "--" 2 dashes and no value being displayed. Strength training with kettlebell (swings and get-ups) produces no active minutes - registers very low HR values, everything in the lowest zone, which is total non-sense (pun intended). Sometimes, sport activity does not record any HR - had to restart the watch.
    I think I'm done with Fitbit and aim to switch to Garmin Epix. The sport stats and features seem to be in completely different league there.

    Another regression compare to the first Sense: the swimming app no longer display the number of laps or length on the watch during the activity, you can only see a timer. It is only available on the phone App once the activity is done. Therefore, unlike Sense 1, Sense 2 is mostly useless for swimming. • @RyansTechMedia
      @RyansTechMedia  Рік тому +1

      My pleasure @Inga 8! Many watches these days track all stages of sleep. Fitbit watches usually do a good job in this category. You can also track your HRV with Fitbit Sense 2, but to see your trends and significant changes over time you need to become a premium member. If you have an iPhone, then Apple Watch 8 is pretty good too and it can track both your HRV and sleep patterns, but the downside is a shorter battery life. And as a third option you can also buy a watch like Garmin Venu 2 Plus that also does a great job with sleep tracking and can track your HRV on demand and has a great battery life. The downside is that it doesn't show any trends of your HRV over time, but individual snapshots of your HRV measurements. I've been using this watch for nearly a year now and have several videos about it on the channel if you're interested.
      The HRV on the Fitbit Sense is only available in the these countries:
      Canada, United States, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Asia Pacific, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Latin America, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay.

At the moment I have no watch, I checked Garmin Venu 2 and it lookes very bulky, especially for a small wrist. I dont really need high end model and plenty of features and sport tracking. Do you think Apple 5 series are also good enough? Accurate heart rate, oxygen level, accurate sleep report with all 3 phases are very important for me. I dont have anything from apple, but if it is the best alternative I might need to switch to some affordable models.

    • @RyansTechMedia
      @RyansTechMedia  Рік тому +1

      It sounds like you have an iPhone. In that case, sure watchOS 9 which is the latest operating system of apple watches is compatible with Apple Watch 5 I believe and all Apple watches have great heart rate sensor, similar to Garmin. By the way, Garmin Venu 2 Plus that I have is actually a bit smaller than the Venu 2, unlike what the name suggests and Garmin has another one called Venu 2S which is the smallest one. But I think you'd be happy with an Apple Watch. Another good, but more affordable option is Apple Watch SE (2022). All these watches are great at those things you care about the most, but with Apple watches you just need to get used to a charging routine especially one that's a few hours before your bedtime just to make sure the watch won't die during your sleep.

      Sorry sometimes it's easy to miss the replies here. So you're referring to the old model right? This one: amzn.to/3XAVB8K
      Its heart rate tracking is not as good as the newer models, but it's still acceptable for the price. The accuracy especially declines during fitness activities like strength training. But for this price it does a decent job tracking heart rate and sleep patterns with a great battery life.

      Thanks Brad! Well, there are other good brands too, like Polar and Suunto, but unfortunately there's no perfect smartwatch out there. All of them have their own pros and cons. But since you have an Android phone and you care about battery life, a Garmin watch like the Venu 2 Plus might the right choice (btw I don't think I've seen an Amazon music app for this watch, but there is Spotify and Deezer).

    Also I have an Apple phone. Do you think it is more worth my time to get the sense or the Apple SE watch? I just want basic fitness, sleep and health features. I’m not a professional but I want to lose weight and track my health.

Now that you're in the market for a smartwatch you can check out my latest video Polar Ignite 3 which has an interesting feature that I really liked especially when trying to lose weight and then some of my Garmin Venu 2 Plus videos. With these two watches you kind of lose some of the smart features you'd normally see on an Apple Watch for example but their sensors are great.

    I'm a cancer patient who wants to track my heartrate and sleep patterns. the cancer is in my chest and affects my heart, and from what I've read, my resting heartrate may take months or even years after chemo to get back to a healthy place. Despite the cons of the Sense 2, do you think it's still the best option for my needs? I know the Apple 8 has a lot of the same functions, and I'd be willing to pay the extra $ for it, except for the terrible battery life. Do you have any recommendations for the best watch for me? Also, I live in the US (California) and I have an iPhone SE, in case that influences your recommendation.

    • @RyansTechMedia
      @RyansTechMedia  Рік тому +4

      First of all, I wish you a speedy recovery and full health. There is no doubt that the Apple Watch is the best choice for iPhone when it comes to smartwatch features. But if you look at other watches like the Sense 2 from a fitness tracking point of view, they're very capable. I'm going to recommend you the Sense 2 and the Garmin Venu 2 Plus (link in the description). The first one (Sene 2) because of aFib detection and great analytics (but behind a paywall) and the second one (Venu 2 Plus) for great accuracy of their sensors like heart rate, etc. Both have a great battery life and in my tests they both track my sleep very similarly. Of course the sleep data is not exactly the same because they have different algorithms but in my opinion they both do a great job. And lastly the stress management which is very important to your health, especially during your treatment and recovery period, is a feature of both of these watches, but despite Sense's cool EDA measurement which is based on your sweat glands I think the stress data from the Venu 2 Plus is more straightforward and better understood.
      If you end up getting yourself an AW8 then you just need a trial week to learn how you use the watch and then come up with some kind of charging schedule, especially one that makes sure you have enough charge for sleep tracking during night. Some people get used to this and some others get sick of this charging routine after a while.
      BTW I have some videos about the Venu 2 Plus too that you can watch if you want to. I hope this helps!

    Getting rid of the 3rd party apps is the best thing Fitbit has done for the past 4-5 years. They were poorly implemented and caused several connection sync issues with the phone. Pandora and Deezer only worked with premium accounts, while Spotify was only used to control the music on your phone, nothing more. Also, adding Google Wallet and Google Maps is more than counterbalancing the loss of the app store. My Versa4 is the 1st Fitbit I've owned (previously, I had Versa2 and the Ionic) that is fluid and has zero connection problems. If you want a full spec Smartwatch get the Google Watch (and with that a one-day battery) or a Premium Fitness tracker that offers the basic functionality of a Smartwatch and still has 6 days battery get the Sense2 or Versa4.
