The party losing for the third time to Beatrix, and her becoming good just because she sees Dagger unconscious, is the weakest moment in the game. Freya immediately forgiving her is weird too........imho, they should have allowed us to finish the fight here, and Beatrix's face turn should have been more gradual, slower, culminating with her joining the party for good after Alexandria falls( 9 party members for FF9, would have been cool)
It makes sense in the same way that Cecil's does in ff4, where they JUST saw their King/Queen commit mass murder and are now questioning what the hell is going on in their head. Following up with them seeing another monstrous act; the bomb ring for Cecil and what Brahne did to Garnet for Beatrix, cements their stance. Though yeah, the immediate forgiveness is Bs. Even if it was Brahne who Odin'd Cleyra, Beatrix still had her hand in Burmecia. Half the damage and blood is on her hands.
I enjoyed Beatrix's character and how they gave her the depth of being so driven believing she's doing this all for Alexandria...But one of my complaints with this game is that by the end, she walks around a little bit too freely for someone who was complacent with genocide.

Cecil’s arc was way better done, with Cecil at the beginning of the game you were shown the conflict with him and the red wings with them debating if they should really do those actions, and when actually attacking Mysidia, actually showed hesitation and afterwards immediate remorse, there was actual build up, and unlike Beatrix, didn't act like a total jerk wad or brainwashed tool when doing it (I don't judge a person based solely on their actions but also largely on their attitude and motives, which is what I think all people should do), with Beatrix there is no build up, the scene on the Red Rose with her post-Cleyra I felt was a complete ass pull, then bam! Suddenly when you're back in Alexandria, she's her jerkwad self again, then afterwards as this one person put it "through the span of three dialogue boxes, changes from a cold blooded war mongerer to a loyal companion"? Yeah, no, that's not how it works, it's really cliché. Plus as Garnet's "protector" she's really bad at it, she didn't show any concern when Garnet was shot down on the Prima Vista, nor did she question why Brahne wasn't sending her to "rescue" Garnet (which you would think she would try to do ASAP) but rather seemed more interested in waging war and instead sending murderous creatures after her that would do more harm than good and cause a lot of collateral damage, Beatrix didn't mention or ask about Garnet's safety or whereabouts when encountered in Burmecia, even though she should clearly be able to recognize some of the party as the people from Tantalas that "Kidnapped" Garnet. Only after Cleyra does she ask about Garnet, even though you think she would immediately return to Alexandria to check up on Garnet's welfare rather than be focusing on waging war with innocent Burmecians and Cleyrians, even back in Alexandria she didn't notice that Garnet was in the room until she was literally pointed out to Beatrix (after forcing you into a pointless battle that did nothing but flaunt her god mode status). Not only that, but apparently she was amongst the people who didn't believe Garnet when she said her mom was going crazy and starting a war, even though Beatrix was clearly taking part in this and no doubt had briefings from Brahne on said subject, so she had to know that Garnet was on to something, all this makes it REALLY hard to sympathize with Beatrix, what would have been better is if she instead took the place of a certain other irratating character, Brahne.

The music for this game was SO fucking good! My god...I remember almost every song was amazing. This is one of the few VG soundtracks I actually bought and the soundtrack + that had the music from the cut scenes...thats how good the music was even the cut scenes deserved their own CD! lol...man, it was so difficult to get them back in the day too. I think I dropped like $30 each or something on EBay back in the day...
well FF XV was a mess but it did rescued somethings from classic FF, and VII remake really improved on it (it was not quite there yet in my opinion, but it is sure in the right track, I love the game). I still cheer for a comeback of the series.

IX isn’t a great game, there are tons of other problems with IX as well, such as Garnet’s stupidity: 1) Runs away from home because she's afraid her mother is trying to kill her and take over the world 2) Risks the lives of many, many people and causes numerous deaths along her flight from the castle (yes, I count all those Black Mages on the ship as deaths) 3) Upon arrival in Lindblum suddenly proclaims that she refuses to believe her mother is evil and trying to take over the world, despite proof of her unprovoked attack on Burmecia, the slaughter of Black Mages, and the attempts to kill the kidnappers 4) Runs all the way home because apparently she wanted to just talk to her mom and DRUGS AND ABANDONS ZIDANE: the guy who loved her 5) Through her stupidity, she gets captured and tortured. Millions of people die from the results of her entirely preventable course of action because she basically handed over her Eidolons to her mother on a silver platter, and just to rub salt in the wound, she never gets called and chewed out on any of this, especially not by Zidane who should very rightfully be furious and upset with her, after all that he did for her, only for her to blow him off. That is why I hate Garnet.

... you carried her out of the secret passage into the main room of the castle just to put her to rest on the freaking couch?! When time is of the essence and the Queen is coming?! Why are you making a completely unforced stop in the most dangerous place? Duuurrrrr… Why are you apologizing Zidane? It's Dagger's fault you are all in this mess in the first place, with her drugging and abandoning you after all you did for her and running back home like an idiot, and causing Cleyra to be BLOWN UP that you were lucky to get teleported out of when you did, if anything she should be the one massively apologizing, but she will never get called out on this and held responsible. The game wants me to care about Steiner's plight here, but honestly, after Dagger's whole stupid "run back to Alexandria" subplot which Steiner took a part in (the results of which we just saw happen to Cleyra), his ridiculous obliviousness and denial of the Queen's insanity (which to be fair, isn't completely his fault, it's the fault of Cid and Garnet for not giving him any important information, and Garnet's own dumb denial), and everything that happened in Burmecia and Cleyra that he didn't witness, I really don't care. It would have been much better if he went to Burmecia and actually saw what was happening, how much more interesting would it have been to see his reactions towards Beatrix and how he would speak to her about all that? Yeah as Freya says, too little too late. Beatrix is just doing a cheap imitation of Cecil Harvey's story from FFIV, but what made Cecil's original plot work in IV was that with Cecil you clearly saw the hesitation he showed in his actions when he attacked Mysidia, his fellow Red Wing knights were repeatedly questioning the whole thing and Cecil clearly showed remorse for it and then immediately questioned the "King" (who was actually an imposter) himself to his face about the whole thing, Beatrix on the other hand, showed no hesitation in her actions throughout Bermecia and Cleyra (she even LAUGHS just before she invades the top of the Cleyra tree) and just acts like a condescending warmongering bitch, and had zero remorse until the airship scene after Cleyra's destruction where is just comes out of nowhere, it was an asspull. This isn't going to be the only time FFIX repeats a plot-line from a previous main FF game, but with crappier writing. Also Zidane, first off, don't suddenly give Beatrix a free pass, again she had this realization far later than she should have, and at least Steiner didn't commit any warcrimes. Secondly, a lot of Steiner's denial could have been subsided if Dagger and Cid had simply told Steiner what was going on, Dagger telling him why she wanted to be kidnapped in the first place, and Cid explaining to Steiner why he wanted the princess to be kidnapped and what was happening to the queen, sure he still would have initially had doubts, but it would have at least put the idea in his head which would continue to grow the more evidence he saw.
Hihihih I was like "Now I will kill Beatrix" when in disc 4 I get to learned "Thunder Slash, Stock Break, Climhazzard & Shock" for Steiner..hahahah if only I can hack the game..I will put Steiner with all her Seiken ability..hihihi let see then a war between those 2 protector of Alexandria... :D
Beatrix should have lost this, BUT, she should have had a move that could one-shot anyone in the party through all protections. That way it could be made clear that she could beat any of the characters 1v1 but was unable to defeat 4 of them at once. At this point in the game each of the characters are like unto gods but I get that they wanted to keep her as "the best". They could but instead they just give a big F you to the player and have the characters instantly forgive her. Trash tier job, square. You suck.

I don't hate Quina/Amarant like alot of other Final Fantasy IX fans, but Beatrix really should've been a permanent party member.

I was enjoying IX until Disk 1 Lindblum when Garnet started being a selfish idiot and drugged and abandoned Zidane and the others, ruined the love story, rendering the entire beginning of the game with the kidnapping and getting to Lindblum pointless, and is responsible for giving her mother magic nuclear weaponry that annihilated Cleyra, seriously hurt Lindblum and then Alexandria itself killing god knows how many people.
But hey, we're talking about a game where a war criminal is never confronted about the shit she did and is left to stay as an unbeatable mary sue.

Why are you apologizing Zidane? It's Dagger's fault you are all in this mess in the first place, with her drugging and abandoning you after all you did for her and running back home like an idiot, and causing Cleyra to be BLOWN UP that you were lucky to get teleported out of when you did, if anything she should be the one massively apologizing, but she will never get called out on this and held responsible.
The game wants me to care about Steiner's plight here, but honestly, after Dagger's whole stupid "run back to Alexandria" subplot which Steiner took a part in (the results of which we just saw happen to Cleyra), his ridiculous obliviousness and denial of the Queen's insanity (which to be fair, isn't completely his fault, it's the fault of Cid and Garnet for not giving him any important information, and Garnet's own dumb denial), and everything that happened in Burmecia and Cleyra that he didn't witness, I really don't care.
It would have been much better if he went to Burmecia and actually saw what was happening, how much more interesting would it have been to see his reactions towards Beatrix and how he would speak to her about all that?

Beatrix is just doing a cheap imitation of Cecil Harvey's story from FFIV, but what made Cecil's original plot work in IV was that with Cecil you clearly saw the hesitation he showed in his actions when he attacked Mysidia, his fellow Red Wing knights were repeatedly questioning the whole thing and Cecil clearly showed remorse for it and then immediately questioned the "King" (who was actually an imposter) himself to his face about the whole thing, Beatrix on the other hand, showed no hesitation in her actions throughout Bermecia and Cleyra (she even LAUGHS just before she invades the top of the Cleyra tree) and just acts like a condescending warmongering bitch, and had zero remorse until the airship scene after Cleyra's destruction where is just comes out of nowhere, it was an asspull.
This isn't going to be the only time FFIX repeats a plot-line from a previous main FF game, but with crappier writing.
Also Zidane, first off, don't suddenly give Beatrix a free pass, again she had this realization far later than she should have, and at least Steiner didn't commit any warcrimes. Secondly, a lot of Steiner's denial could have been subsided if Dagger and Cid had simply told Steiner what was going on, Dagger telling him why she wanted to be kidnapped in the first place, and Cid explaining to Steiner why he wanted the princess to be kidnapped and what was happening to the queen, sure he still would have initially had doubts, but it would have at least put the idea in his head which would continue to grow the more evidence he saw.

Beatrix should have died here or at least been knocked out. Made no sense she beat everyone a 3rd time (especially with Steiner in the party).

Beatrix should have lost this, BUT, she should have had a move that could one-shot anyone in the party through all protections. That way it could be made clear that she could beat any of the characters 1v1 but was unable to defeat 4 of them at once. At this point in the game each of the characters are like unto gods but I get that they wanted to keep her as "the best". They could but instead they just give a big F you to the player and have the characters instantly forgive her. Trash tier job, square. You suck.
