    Thanks for what you do! It's really important for people to understand something: there are many pros out there who can throw 550 plus, and some way over 600. That doesn't mean they can teach YOU how to do what they do. I highly value your coaching and I look forward to seeing more content from your channel.

    Thanks Josh (and Mikey). What attracted me to - and stuck with - your channel years ago is your teaching style which is easy to understand, logical, and just works. The quality of the video/editing and audio is also what distinguished you and Mikey from others. The reference to a favorite teacher is so true. Example: Djokovic’s coaches are not the best tennis players in the world. Love you guys. Keep it up.

    That net was one of the best disc golf things I ever bought (link in the description, folks). Interesting, I was tinkering with this the past few nights. Not to increase power, but because I was feeling noticeable fatigue when I flailed my arm back. So I've been working on a bit more compact form. I'm 90%+ working the net and watching myself on video. Thanks for sharing, player 😉

    No one asks how far Bryson DeChambeau's coach hits a golf ball. I'd ignore it as well. Just keep doing what you're doing. I've definitely gained some distance and accuracy this year by filming myself and identifying what I need to work on. I'm not "gaining 100 ft in one day" but I've made measurable improvements and having fun.

    I like your arm change; however, do you have footage comparing the face side of the brace point? It looks like you braced against your weight and turn on a more linear axis at a standstill. Your standard throw looks like it is catching the weight transfer. By the way, I think your videos are fantastic.

    You are picking up a very important point I have always repeated in my life as a former high school teacher and also as a sports coach for semi professional u21 teams in another sport. Look at some of the best football (soccer) coaches in the world: Mourinho, Tuchel, Nagelsmann, Klopp, Eriksson, Rangnick, Wenger (and even Guardiola to a degree) and so many more where mediocre players at best. Very rarely do you get a superb player who becomes a great coach like Zidane. Most of the time the "top players" are mediocre coaches (e.g. Henry, Scholes, Matthäus or Maradona), because its just not the same. You can be a great coach without ever been a great player. Keep it up Josh!

    • @CherryB0mb333
      @CherryB0mb333 Рік тому +2

      The important point that you’re missing (most of the people you’ve listed have admitted to this) is that you have to be able to do something at a high level at one time to be able to coach. If I had form like josh and maxed out at ma1 then I’d probably make a 20 minute mental gymnastics video too.

    • @derpderpin1568
      @derpderpin1568 Рік тому +1

      Also just mathematically makes sense. There's FAR FAR FAR more people who were never pro athletes than those that were and they're the ones that've held the overwhelming majority of those positions throughout history. It's rare for a great player to even step in to the position to have a chance to fail at it.

    • @peter007crouch
      @peter007crouch Рік тому

      @@derpderpin1568 In order to answer that, we would need to know the actual percentages of players (good or bad) who try. I don't have that information. I could see that it is *more likely* that you become a great coach after a great career as a players, however it is not a guarantee. But even if we ignore the part, where I state that great players rarely make great coaches, the main point still stands: You can be a great coach without ever been a great player. Some of the names I put in there were never even professional footballers (some were, but most were not in a very good club and/or a national team).

    One of the best disc golf coaching videos I have ever seen. The way you communicate the problem, examine the issues, explain how to go about implementing a form change, and then the data to back it up...amazing work. Expertly communicated and produced! Love this slightly different format with lab, field, and course shots. The "data series" experiments are killing it too, its a huge benefit to be able to back up your observations with objective evidence. Scientifically, your sample size and number of reps are too small, but we'll let that go, especially since you acknowledge this as bro science ;)

    Excellent video, with a great message. The player/coach line gets blurred in every sport I've ever seen. Exceptional athletes and players do not always (or even often) make great coaches. Teaching is a skill, and it is not a natural byproduct of performing well. Someone that is both a high-level competitor, and a great coach, is quite rare.

  • @sarinhighwind
    @sarinhighwind Рік тому

    That's really the hardest part of coaching. People don't understand that as a coach you have to constantly try things.
    So, I'd say it like this. There are coaches like... Stokley for example. He teaches a "I know how to play disc golf, I'll teach you to play like me" method of teaching. I'm sure there is some more to it, but that's the jist of what him and many others do.
    Then there are coaches to are literally experimenting with things and constantly learning and re-learning over and over again. I cannot be a good player because I don't practice ever to be a good player. I practice to teach you 15 different shot shapes and all sorts of other goofie crap so people when they come to me. "hey I wanna learn to throw overstable backhand rollers." I got them, its not something I have to say "hey wait like a week while I practice again to show you."
    As a coach, you need to decide if you wanna be good at golf or not, or you wanna be good at coaching.
    And the people I play with, they don't care that I'm good at golf. They know I coach, they have seen me play really good, or do things that most people cant. Why? Because someone has to learn it, and to try and keep a bag of tricks to teach others at any point, you cannot practice being good at just golfing on a golf course.

    There's the old saying (which has some truth and 'hear' me out before you jump all over me)....those who can do, those who can't teach. That's not really a mean thing and it doesn't mean a teacher/coach CAN'T "do". The point of it is that you don't have to be the greatest or even the best at what you teach.....a teacher's (or coach's) sole purpose is to make what they are teaching understandable. Not everyone can do that no matter how good they are at doing what they do. Teachers/coaches understand the concepts and how to get them across to the students in a way that the student will understand and learn from it. A great athlete might be able to "do" what their sport/activity requires, but might not be able to explain to a novice HOW it is done. Teachers/coaches might not be the greatest at 'doing', but they do have to know how to do it and, most of all, communicate the 'how' to their student. So the saying probably should be.....those who know how to do, do....those who can communicate HOW, teach.

  • @RippedWarrior
    @RippedWarrior Рік тому

    The way I see it, a coach's job isn't to make anyone "good". A coach's job is to help you get to your current maximum potential based on your biology, drive to practice, mental game, time available, etc. This is why some of the best coaches aren't the best players and some of the best players aren't the best coaches. Just because a professional was able to get to their highest potential doesn't mean they can get someone else to their highest potential. Similarly, just because a coach isn't a professional doesn't mean they aren't playing at their highest potential at that point in time.

    Now that we have the data, can you talk about how speed and spin relate to distance? How many mph of speed is 100 rpms of spin worth when it comes to distance? Can you isolate improving just speed, or just RPM, and if so, which yields faster results for distance? For accuracy? Love to be able to represent distance as a function of the digital values captured by the technology. Just some future video ideas for you.

    So hole 10 at Sandusky Park is 150m (490-ish ft), and you seemed to be landing around 25-30m (or 70-90 ft) short. So now people know how far you throw. Kind of.

  • @tonydavila2606
    @tonydavila2606 Рік тому

    I feel like distance should stay undisclosed. Because it might make some people lose that credibility. Like oh Josh can only throw 380. So why am I taking tips from him when I’m trying to reach 500. When that’s not at all how it should be. Think of the greatest players in the world, Tiger Woods had a coach. Do you think his coach was better than Tiger Woods? Every pro level top-tier athlete has a coach. Their coach doesn’t necessarily play better, run faster, punch harder. But they have this weird knowledge of the dynamics behind proper form and the power to be able to translate that over to someone who doesn’t understand. And knows how to work with people to help them get their step-by-step, that’s what makes them a coach.
    So many people might be great at something but don’t know how to break it down and teach it to somebody else and don’t know how to work with that person when they get into physical or mental blocks.

      This was the reasoning for the rule initially. I think now I don’t really care that much if people weed themselves out now. The student that believes that probably won’t work well with me anyways so I’m not too worried about dropping hints at distance

    Hey Josh, question! Icebergtv recently made a video explaining how less spin will cause a disc to have more turn. We know from other OT videos that that more fingers under the rim seems to increase spin. So if some players struggle with turning and burning putters with a power grip, why do they tend to find success in switching to a fan grip? It seems like the adjustment should be to add spin, but theoretically, the fan grip should be reducing it.

      I would imagine it is where the index finger is. It’s very easy to mess pressure points up with power grip on putter. If that index finger slides under and hooks under the rim it can get caught on release.

    As a music professor and performer you make some great points. Thanks for sharing. Hard to split energy between two roles. I always say Lebron may be the best player, but he still benefits from a coach. Teaching/coaching is a separate skill

    This makes sense. If you look at someone like Niklas Antilla, you might notice the wingspan to be very well balanced throughout the throw (sometimes with a slight lag). Perhaps more important than a tight power pocket to not offset the spinal balance.

    Can we just take a minute to compliment you on your fitness? Maybe Josh #5 the human would appreciate that positive feedback. Nice work man.

    Personally I don't like the AI clips and the smattering of video styles, but the information was good, as always. Not to fix that putt ;)
