I'm an Anglo-American who 24 years ago began studying Spanish. I dedicated several years and made many trips to Spain and Latin America to become fluent. If all that had only allowed me to appreciate this song, it would have been worth the effort.
I remember hearing this song a lot growing up, never understanding what the big fuss was about a person singing to a bird. Probably one of the saddest songs ever written but very beautiful. Thank you mom and dad for sharing these songs with me, although it took me many years after your deaths to understand and appreciate our music.
"Cucurrucucú paloma" is a Mexican Huapango song written by Tomás Méndez and introduced by Lola Beltrán in the film Cucurrucucú Paloma. The song also appeared in other movies, such as Escuela de Vagabundos, The Last Sunset, Happy Together, Talk to Her. It has also been recorded by Luis Miguel, Rocío Dúrcal, Pedro Infante, Perry Como, Miguel Aceves Mejía, Harry Belafonte, Nana Mouskouri, Julio Iglesias, Shirley Kwan, Lila Downs, Joan Baez, Rosemary Clooney and KISS. This beautiful version by Caetano Veloso,
Such a beautiful song and the way Caetano sings it with so much feelings, reminds me of the day my beloved and I saw the movie. This songs brings me so many sweet and wonderful memories. And now he is no more.
OMG, what a beautiful song! Thank you so much for the translation! This is one of my favorite movies and this song was a defining moment for me in this story.
This song gives me goose bumps. What extraordinary soul, emotion & depth that one can feel listening to this beautiful song. Thank you for sharing. I've loved this song since the first time I saw Habla con Ella. Muchimas gracias por todo!!!
I have heard this song all my life, but when I heard a clip on National Public Radio about 6 years ago featuring Caetano singing this song from this movie (Talk To Her), it absolutely blew my mind. I'm native bilingual (Spanish & English), and no other version has affected me as much as this one. Caetano Veloso is THE BEST as far as singing Hispanic love songs.
Belo presente...
as a spanish speaker... i already knew. but your explanation is the best i Heard up until now. id would be great if you could explain every song i like.
I hope you realize that he is not singing to a bird. He is singing about a dove that died of sadness from the lost of his love. The dove is a personification of the lead character in this movie.
@Lapkit: This is a scene from the movie "Talk to Her" or "Habla con Ella" by Pedro Almodovar (the man saying "Acion" in the beginning}. If you want to know the story, just watch it. It is one of my all-time favorite films. A beautiful, beautiful story about love, but not about the kind of love you might think.

the name is cucurrucucu "dove", which is the noise the dove makes... it talks about love but using the dove as a subject..talks about a love which can't be forgotten...that even after one's dead, the other is in love and cries for love and sings about this love, this unmercyful feeling...that's pretty much it! :D Was I clear? lol... I don't know...

I have heard this song tons of times, but this version is the best. Love the movie, love the song. I can hear it over and over and never tire of it.
