You need to tap and release and tap and release to perfectly deflect each individual attack of the combo. That is counted as perfect deflection. That's why you mostly struggle with enemies.

That boss is obviously an illusion from his hollow white appearance and lady butterfly's fight taught players very early that snapseeds are useful against illusions. But most of us also had to fight without snapseeds becoz we ran out of snapseeds and no place to buy them initially.
That's why tutorial and manuals are necessary to read they give information and game mechanics to understand the controls
