    I love cooking with fresh herbs from the garden, but my garden is down a steep hill from my house, so I decided to build a Totes Easy Solar Powered Self Watering Raised Garden Planter to put right outside my kitchen on the patio. Upcycling packing totes (plastic bins) from our recent cross-country move and a handful of cedar boards, I was able to build this sleek, modern looking raised herb planter to bring my garden to me. This easy DIY container garden project can be done in a weekend. Because I spend so much time on the farm, away from the house, I needed the kitchen garden to be able to look after itself. Enter the solar powered self watering system. The sun charges a water pump that brings water from a rain barrel up to the planter and this solar drip irrigation system waters the herbs through emitters that give the plants exactly the right amount of water.The geometric pattern of the cedar wood adds visual interest, and the Japanese shou sugi ban (焼杉板) finish gives it that modern look I was going for. The storage totes make the whole system modular and portable, so if you live in a rental or have other reasons for container gardening or not wanting a permanent raised garden bed, this is a fantastic project to give you a place to grow a few things, bring your herbs closer to your kitchen, and can be an awesome decorative feature to your deck, patio or outdoor space.

      hahahaha FINALLY someone noticed! I told my videographer we should make a compilation video showing all the projects I've used the boxes for haha! The thing is though, I grew up pretty poor, so being a good steward of my resources is very important to me. I paid for those boxes and darn it if I don't get every last bit of use out of them.

    Using the existing bins as soil containers also mean you don't have to decide how big to make the planter, at least the width and depth, the height is the only remaining determination. Well done!

      Hahaha while I appreciate the sentiment, oh how I wish it were more true! I’m working really hard to get to that stage, and someday soon I hope to have even more time to dedicate to the making of the fun stuff part :). What you don’t see in these videos is the many, many, many hours (unfortunately outweighing the crafting and farming time by quite a bit) in front of a computer doing all the behind the scenes work it takes to bring you these videos, but knowing folks are enjoying them and are getting better equipped to do the things they want to do by watching them as well makes it all worth it and then some!

    Looks good could meket the top a frame with a lip that just drops over the edge if you where going to rotate tubs regularly . I was also told .. many years ago not to use fire on concrete as it can pop chunks out if there are air bubbles.

  • @Jehzell963
    @Jehzell963 4 роки тому

    When you put drainage holes 3-4” up from the bottom, on the sides of the totes, you can water at least half as much, and preserve nutrients from running right out the bottom with too frequent watering. People are obsessed with bottom drainage. It looks awesome.

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  4 роки тому +1

      The idea behind this design is that the solar watering system delivers exactly what the plants need moisture wise, and the drainage is for when there is heavy rainfall. Lack of bottom drainage in a plastic container would encourage mold and fungal disease in the soil below.

    • @Jehzell963
      @Jehzell963 4 роки тому

      Anne of All Trades I get that. But wicking tubs, in plastic or anything, function on this principle. The air roots (all above the drainage holes) prevent rot.

    Great design, but I do, (and I hope you don't get mad at me), wonder if the lumber used to support the base of the totes might fail over time due to rot. Your design does however prevent rot by putting the wet soil in boxes. away from the wood. Oh, and did you put filter fabric in the boxes to prevent soil leaking out?
    Well done, clearly a happy maker by the end.

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  4 роки тому +2

      It may fail, but that’s about $0.50 in scrap wood so easily replaced if it does. No filter fabric needed, the wood chips in the bottom of the bins are far larger than the holes. I built this in May and have had plants in it since, and nothing negative to report.

      As mentioned in the video, I already had the boxes from moving. The cedar is seconds from a local mill where you can buy 2 bunks for $200 so I used less than $5 of wood for the planter. 1 4x4 and some fasteners later, and you have about $10.
