- Anyone can build these simple, inexpensive planters! This video was sponsored by Aquor Water Systems! Get more info at bit.ly/2KlC0F4
This spring, more folks than ever before are starting to think more about where their food comes from and how they might be able to get more involved in the growing process. For those who can't have large raised bed gardens, are living in apartments, have no yard, or just looking to spruce up their porches or windowsills, easy, DIY planter build is a perfect project.
I was able to build these inexpensive modular cedar DIY planters for my videographer Jacqueline so she can start farming on her modern apartment's balcony patio. Ok, maybe farming is a slight exaggeration, but she will have a nice kitchen garden right outside her door with very little watering or other upkeep. These DIY planters would also work great as a window box or window planter. Heck, you don't even have to plant a kitchen garden in it, you can put flowers in them too! Using my free diy planter box plans, (get the free raised planter boxes plans PDF on my website www.anneofalltrades.com/blog/2... ), learn how to build a small patio planter box using only a few dollars worth of material, a limited toolkit, and a couple of hours. Start a small raised bed garden right on your patio and become a little bit more self-sufficient with these easy woodworking plans.

2020 - the year that everybody started raised bed gardening.
Isn't that the truth!
Don't know what's better the video or the bloopers at the end. It is always great to watch and I pray you have much success in Tenn. welcome to the south.
Thanks so much! I love it here.
Now you need a couple little baskets/racks for the spigots and other things to use with the water outlet. So they don't get lost in the dirt. You look like you're having a great time, it's always fun to see what you are up to.
Absolutely right! Even before I'd finished this video I already knew that was gonna have to be the next project!
Love the bloopers. Thank you.

Informative and amusing. Your willingness to laugh at yourself, that humility, and commitment to sharing your knowledge in a fun and detailed fashion are what make your videos amongst the best on UA-cam. Eventually. You will have your own PBS or HGTV show :)
Outtakes are awesome! Such a fun way to leave a great video! Have a great week!
Thank you Stu! You too!
Thanks for the outtakes!

Diseased wood is always so pretty. The colors in that cedar are insane! Love love love this project 🌱♥️

Great planter build like the water spicket the most great idea
Isn't it the COOLEST? I was pretty excited about it.
Bloopers very cool!! the entire video was very interesting, thank you for sharing this content with us, keep it up!
It's time, it's adventure.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Enjoyed the video and the out takes. We have been dealing with a disease killing the cedar and oaks in Texas for the last eight or nine years. I tend to keep a stack of logs for the mill because of it.
Dang, it seems to be sweeping the whole country!
I bet it smelled awesome while cutting! Nice work.
Sure did!
Nice video Anne! Thank you for sharing it with us!💖👌👍😎JP
Thanks for watching JP!
Your very welcome Anne! Have a great week!😎
First day with the new spigots? Fun video..thanks for posting.
You bet!
"Spider, snake and wasp city" is too funny. Know exactly what this is like! Laughing for sure.
hahah yeah no one wants to stick their hand in there.
I had so much fun watching your vid and really enjoyed the 'aqua' tutorial as I need a set up like that one as well. More vid's!! please
Thank you! Will do!
That bee looked like a Carpenter Bee, sorta looks like a Bumblebee. If you see about 1/2" holes drilled into your wood buildings, it's their work. They like to hover around and watch carpenter work of course!! They hardly ever sting.
haha yeah it was a carpenter bee, mostly harmless (except to buildings) but still terrifyingly large ;)
Lovely planter Anne! And the water system looks really good! 👌
Thanks so much! 😊Yeah I love it!
Love the bloopers.... glad it wasn't ad easy as you made it look 🤣
haha nothing ever is :)
I Love it👍
beautiful compost
Thanks!
awesome video ,Anne ,nice and simple planters
Thanks so much!
@@AnneofAllTrades 👍👍
I buy this rough cut cedar close by in Arkansas (Aromatic Cedar or Arkansas Red Cedar, I think its mostly called). It's great around the farm for the barn, fences, etc. You can use it fresh from the sawmill because it shrinks very little in drying. Smells great too!
Absolutely!!
Wow amazing video
Thank you so much 😀
I’ve been trying to find a video to do the diy planters. Thank you!!! I’m going to start my planter next week lol
Good luck! Shout if you run into any issues!
@@AnneofAllTrades I will! 😄 I’m excited!
Hi Anne i dont like spiders but i am really scared of snakes and we see plenty of them in Australia. Shame about the disease in the cedar it looks good timber.thanks Anne.
Stay safe Ashleigh 💖
Awesome stuff Anne, great job on the planters! 😃👍🏻👊🏻 ... That stuff from Aquor is really cool! 💦
Thanks Fred! I am OBSESSED
@@AnneofAllTrades I've been eyeing their products since I first saw Matt Risinger show them a while back, not sure if I'll invest for my current home, but definitely want to go with their products for the next one when I can retire and move out of NY.
I love the bloopers at the end. made me laugh so much.
haha glad to hear it!
Speaking as a former landscaper, you're not really installing outdoor plumbing unless you accidentally spray yourself in the process. Great video
hahaha TRUTH
That's an awesome water hose upgrade.
It sure is, I've been absolutely LOVING it since I installed it a few weeks ago for the video!!
Some of the planks you showed have kerf marks from a BIG circular saw, not a band saw, but they may have both circular and band saws at a big mill.
Extreme video 😁 12:09! Great project!
Thanks! 😁
Loving that and will check it out. After I stop laughing LOL
:)
Your funny water gags 😂😂
:) :)
If you live near Columbia or Lynchburg you might want to visit MarcyJo restaurant or visit Rory Feek’s Hardison Mill School.👍✌️😊🙏🏼
Your bloopers are on 🔥 fire. Good thing there was water 💦 to put them out. 😁😅
🤣🤣 bwahahahahaha🤣🤣
love the out takes.
How neat is that watering system! 👌🏽
Nice planters, really dig the colour of ceder too. 👍🏽
That's a corker bruise on the back of your upper arm.
hahaha what's a corker bruise?
@@AnneofAllTrades
Corker is Aussie/British for awesome! 😉
Anne super si zanimljiva, neobična. Ostani takva i imaš veliki pozdrav iz Hrvatske 🇭🇷.
Thank you!
Great video, but I absolutely love the outtakes at the end.
Outtakes are my favorite thing ;)
Outakes …. That moment when Anne becomes all of us. :-)
hahaha my life is a giant blooper reel.
Anne, you are amazing. so happy for you in your new home, but sad that you left the great PNW. Wish I had your old spot. How is the buyer doing, BTW?
He’s doing great I just talked to him yesterday. He and his wife are having the time of their lives!
Best bloopers..lol..

I think The Three Stooges would have loved that Aquor Water System. 😁
hahahahaha
l Iike your improv coop.
it's not an improv, it's a giant production! Can't wait to share it with everyone :)
@@AnneofAllTrades Right now I have 6 day old chicks living in my kitchen in a wire cage next to the dishwasher. Hopefully is it stops raining here in Western North Carolina so I can get a coop built before they want to move outside.
Great video just remember May 8, 2020 the weather is going to be below 30 so cover those plants ....... Hey video idea lol
haha missed the video opportunity, but I did get everyone tucked into row cover.
Anne, after you cut that black plastic, use your torch to melt the cut edges so that it doesn't unravel again. Hope this helps. 😁
Great tip!
Diluted vinegar and peppermint for spiders. Vinegar, salt and dish soap for vegetation.
With all that cedar dust, your farm must smell good. Well, good compared to other farms, at least.
It really does! And our farm smells even better because it's well managed. A well managed farm shouldn't smell bad ;)
Ground soil compacts in garden boxes, potting soil should be used. I see that sticker didn't come off very easily.
As I mentioned, that was fish compost not ground soil, and then mulch should counteract any compaction ;)
🤣🤣🤣 the bloopers!
bloopers are always my favorite part of the video ;)
I’m curious about the pex tubing. Do you need all of the elbows? I thought the advantage of pex was that you could bend the tubing? Is this a code requirement down there?
it is bend-y, but only over long runs. It doesn't "elbow," which is why we used the elbows ;)
😀
Tip, make sure the valve is in the closed position when installing a quick connect automatic turn on spigot. Unless of course you need a shower after building a planter box. LOL
hahaha gee, thanks.
Love your content Anne. Your positive and uplifting personally is much needed in these times.
Do you plan on recycling all your wood dust and shavings to the garden beds and farm? I compost it but I'm careful not to mix in PT wood.
Howdy! Yep, I put all the sawdust in the garden and give shavings to the chickens, which also later goes in the garden ;)
😊👍👍👍👍👍heylo
I think I’ll try this one. Great point on orienting the grain! Any more info or recommendations on the PEX tubing your using? Are you saying it’s only a temporary solution?
It could easily be a permanent solution, just knowing the temporary nature of this particular project, it was the best option. Check out Pex tubing and Sharkbite connectors, that's what I was using in the video ;)
Anne of All Trades Thanks.
which mill did you purchase from? i live near white house/sprinfield and could use some cheap cedar lumber instead of harvesting live cedars from our property. thanks in advance.
Grant cedar mill
i was sure this was gonna be sponsored by Milwalkee. :-)
I wish!!
👍👍👏👏👏😀
How do you like the Milwaukee chop saw
It's fantastic!
What mill did you use? Looking for a good one in north nashville?
Grant Cedar Mill. It's a drive but worth it.
Look good! But I think you may not have staggered those joints in that first double height box? Either way look great!
hahaha keen eye, I accidentally misoriented them. Jacqueline will never notice ;)
Anne of All Trades glad we could just keep this between us then. Sssssh 🤫
I must hear about that Chicken trailer.
Oh you shall. It's a really fun one.
@@AnneofAllTrades YAY Can't wait.
Don't need anchors with wood, they are for drywall....
Sounds like you should head over to my dovetailing videos 😉
🖒🖒🙌🙌😙😙
Is spalted cedar still resistant to rot? Is it only called spalted when it's from fungus, or is the darkening from wetwood bacterial infection also called spalting? The wetwood darkening HUGELy reduces strength. Just thinking aloud about whether or how wood from diseased trees would work differently in a planter. And of course I'm sure you know that only the heartwood of cedar and redwood are rot resistant, the sapwood isn't.
Spalting is already technically a form of rot, what is generally referred to as spalting is the black lines of fungus. With a lot of woods, you need to catch the spalting before it's gone too far, or it becomes too punky and weak to use. This wood is not spalted though, so not super relevant to the topic at hand ;)
Some one said cedar leaches toxins in garden?
Is that tru
No
