    Thank you for this video! We are actually planning on doing another garden this year, but this time we were wanting to try raised beds to help save our backs while weeding. You gave a lot of great info and tips and I'm sure we'll be incorporating a lot of them into our garden this year. It's nice to be growing our own food again after not doing so for a long time.

    I absolutely LOVE your cat! Looks so much like our sweet cat we had 20+ years ago, named Mittens. We still miss her, so seeing your cat, who acts so much like Mittens, makes me smile. -- And, I'm 71 and putting in 2 large raised beds in the side yards of my suburban neighborhood home, where I'm learning to deal with the Florida sand! Also put in a bunch of fruit trees in the back yard, and grapes on the pergola. It's going to be my grocery store!

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  5 років тому

      I will definitely say we did NOT have the soil we have today when we got started. It's taken 4 years of constant amendment and attention, but it's pretty fantastic now! In texas, you can get mesquite chips from your local arborist and talk to a nearby cattle farmer about getting some manure compost. Generally it's pretty easy to find both for free.

    I don't know what kind of material you used for your arch, but cattle or livestock panels make great arch trellises and they hold up very well with proper stabilizing.

    • @AnneofAllTrades

    Cats and Gardens are my thing. Where would I buy arborist chips for my garden The Mulch that you can get at the big box stores stinks and must be treated I don't want that what other kind of mulch can I buy that would be suitable for my garden?

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  5 років тому +1

      Depending on how many you need, you can actually usually get them for free by calling your local arborists and asking for them to drop some by when they are working near your place. I've never paid for any here and over the years we've used many, many, many free truckloads for various projects.

    All I've got this year is a single hanging Goliath tomato in an up-side-down hanger. If any weed seed finds its way in, it is seperate from the tomato plant and can easily be removed without risking damage to the tomato plant. Nest is empty and it's just me and the wife, both who have major health issues, so a large garden is just more then we can handle. Personally I love fresh home grown veggies, but she doesn't eat enough of them to warrant growing a garden, per-say. But I refuse to not have home grown tomatos. This plant will provide more than I can eat alone. I'll just have to find a way to rehome likely half of the harvest, even off of one plant.

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  5 років тому +1

      There is nothing in the world like a fresh picked tomato.

    Anne, do you have any concerns with the diseases and insects that usually accompany arborist's chips ?

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  5 років тому +1

      Nope, we’ve been using them for years and haven’t had any issues.

    • @AnneofAllTrades
      @AnneofAllTrades  5 років тому +1

      I should also say though that we are very rarely using “fresh” chips. They get delivered in a pile and sit in the sun and get stirred a lot as they get used and spread so by the time they hit the garden, the pile has generally heated up and decomposed a good bit and killed a lot of potentially problematic issues.
