At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia, whilst the Bands were raising money for the people we were there to help and protect. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded by the full horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who had fought a life and death war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is only one of many terrible memories I have from 35 years of active service, and over 2 years hospitalisation. But when I remember the smiles on the children's faces, and their laughter at the terrible way we danced always reminds me that humanity will always find it's way through even the worst of times. I only watched it for the first time last year, my son put it on the TV. A lot of memories came back and a lot of tears. My amazing Wife took me to see Queen at Wembley, U.K., in 1986 two weeks after I got back from Ethiopia as a surprise, we also went to the last Queen concert they ever did. I saw Queen live 8 times in all (my wife only 6 ha ha), they were incredible live. And yes, I am an old fart. P.S. In 2007 I was walking in a part of London called, Putney, with 2 of my fellow service members. We were on our way to see an ex member of our Troop when I spotted a man I recognised, but I couldn't think of where from. Suddenly I realised who it was and shouted out "your John Deacon"! He nearly jumped out of his skin, and I immediately apologised for scaring the crap out of him. My two colleagues thought I'd lost my mind, until I told them who he was. I'd listened to Queen on Base and when we were Posted to Iraq, Afghanistan and a lot of other places all the time. Mr Deacon invited us for a pint at his local pub, which I said yes to, as fast as giving an order on Parade or when under fire. So there I was having a beer with a Legend, Queen's Bassist, talking about all the times I had seen Queen live, starting as far back as 1977 when I was 13, and also that my wife and I had "You're My Best Friend" as our song at our wedding (which he wrote). I told him the impact that hearing Queen at Live Aid had on the refugee's who could hear it at the camp in Ethiopia in 1985. And how It was Queen that actually got some of the children dancing, how they pulled some of us up and ended up dancing with them, and after that moment the children and some of the women started to trust us. The fact that we were able to build on that basis, and in other Country's being able to use music as a way to break down barriers that people who had suffered so much naturally build. Then my colleagues decided to tell him that I had a habit of singing Queen and songs from other bands like the Electric Light Orchestra, Earth Wind and Fire, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy and so on when we were in combat, and how it would help calm the younger Trooper's and soldiers. I just wanted to become invisible at that moment, but he asked me what I sang, so I ran of quite a long list, he said I had good taste. After a couple of pints we went on our way, I had the autograph for my wife. He was a humble and incredibly nice man, and I have such a great memory in meeting one of my hero's. However, as soon as we were out of sight, my colleagues ran for their lives.
Two things that make the shortest 20 minutes of music history even more stunning, firstly Freddie was singing 'against medical advice', he had a throat infection, and secondly that 72,000 strong crowd were tired (the Live Aid event had been going for over six hours before Queen came on stage)
I think 72,000 is about right. When it came to the U.S. (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) J.F.K. Stadium, it was nearly 90,000. That is a huge amount of people packed into a space for hours, and they PAID for the proviledge!
The Queen members created beautiful harmonies in the studios, but their live performances were on another level of entertaining and Freddie's stage presence and crowd control put the crown on them.
They were pretty much the only band who practiced, they didn’t play full songs, they did a medley of their greatest hits and fit it into to 20 minute slot they had.

There isn’t a word for how much math would have been required to get the final tally of how many people watched a performance that none of the people in charge thought would even draw a crowd.

I often wonder if anyone of the 80,000 people inside Wembley Stadium really gaged and understood that they were witnessing what is pretty UNIVERSALLY acknowledged and agreed the greatest ever live performance in the history of Rock and Roll. By the same token my above question/statement could easily said about any one of the 2 billion+ people watching the event being televised live. I actually watched this on television in summer 1985. They were something very special. 72,000 people Freddy had them in his hand. Greatest I've ever seen.😎
Wembley Stadium is my local football (soccer) stadium and happens to be England's national stadium This was the old stadium with the famous Twin Towers. It was completely rebuilt in the early 2000s with the now famous arch instead.
I liked how your partner stayed quiet throughout. She was so fixed on the show. Freddie has so much stage confidence and talent. They have so many more songs not played here that are amazing. You should check them out.
Not only was this one of the best live music performances of any kind ever, it was also one of the most meticulously rehearsed, as others have noted. They got the timing down to perfection. If you watch the end of the video closely, in the camera angle from behind Freddie you'll see a yellow light at the bottom right in front of the stage. That light turns red at the precise moment that the band play their last chord. This was a "traffic light" system put in place to ensure that no performers exceeded the strict limit of 20 minutes per set. The light turned yellow to give advance warning, and when the 20 minutes were up, the light turned red and the audio was cut. Part of the reason why Queen rehearsed so thoroughly was to make sure their time was no more than 20 minutes. Even so, Freddie's "ay-oh" routine with the audience was spontaneous, after which he shortened one of the songs on the fly (I forget which) to make up for the time spent.
@@claudettesmith8328 elton must have been before Queen. Because Elton Said in an interview (you Can watch it on youtube) that he had Said to Freddie when they came off stage: no one needs to go on now Freddie you were absolutely amazing.” Freddie answered: yes darling we were and what were you wearing? You looked like the f queen mother 😊
Queen probably gets the biggest pop ever.. What musical group today can get their audiance to sing with them especially thousands? David Bowe and Elton john were couple artists that went after Queen and suppositly they said something like "How the F*ck we suppose to top that"..
A few things to add to explain why this was the complete act ~ first this set was rehearsed meticulously in advance as the band was nervous about playing to a uk audience as they were criticised for gigging in south africa which still had apartheid. Next remember the crowd were not all queen fans! Next there was a brilliant guy on keys behind the scenes. Finally the band knew the PA suppliers and played at a higher volume than other acts and above the permitted public levels.
When you have the cream of rock and pop in two separate concerts and to say that one act stole the whole show, is all you need to know, The crowd in Philli also joined in with Radio Gaga, not bad considering the 3000 odd miles difference. To top it all, after you've sung your heart out for 22 minutes, David Bowie calls you "bastards" and asks "How am I supposed to follow that"? The single greatest live performance, anywhere and anytime!
Thank you! Great reaction. Freddie Mercury was amazing. The one song that sounded like an Elvis cover, was written by Freddie. The music gods smiled upon him, like a spark in the night, and then he was gone. His legacy and spirit remains
Great reaction! THERE IS ONE. MORE. QUEEN-LIVE AID SONG, THOUGH! (Everyone ALWAYS forgets about it.) Freddie Mercury & Brian May do an ENCORE... "IS THIS THE WORLD WE CREATED?" ...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE react to it as well!
Do you know what live aid was about. A lot of music artists got together for a concert with time limited sessions due to how many artists there were. At the same time in canada there was also the same concert playing with other artists. It was all to gain money to send to africa for food and medicines to help the deprived people in africa. A single was also released with all proceeds to go to Africa to that single was do they know its christmas. At this concert queen had the phones ringing off the hook with people making donations to the kitty for live aid. So much so they were asked to come back near the end of the concert and perform again in the evening. Although due to the media hounding freddie over his sexual orientation at the time queen never featured on the single Do they know its christmas. No one wanted bad publicity so queen were not asked to attend that recording.
I worry that these reactors see this a a Queen concert and measure it on that level. This huge crowd didn’t even know that Queen would be here, they are fans of all of the bands from that day not specifically Queen , but after six hours of mediocrity they were waiting to be entertained, they were waiting for a special experience and Freddie gave it to them. Ad Elton John said immediately afterwards ‘ they just stole the show’ no doubt about that.
The next performer was David Bowie - of al the people ! who can entertain crowds like no one. In the backstage he said to Freddie something like tis: "You bastards. What can I do after this ?"

(Everyone ALWAYS forgets about it.)
Freddie Mercury & Brian May do an ENCORE... "IS THIS THE WORLD WE CREATED?" ...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE react to it as well!
She’s feeling it.
Guys please react to some "Queen Live at Montreal" music videos please!! You won't regret!!!!
The greatest live set in history. And I’m just a sub-par Queen fan.
And ALL around the world!
She is such a beuty. Good health to you. Precious...
Its always weird when you find out everyone’s favourite elvis song, wasn’t actually elvis, it was queen…
21:36 she’s having a whole spiritual moment! Love to see it
It is so much fun to watch yall ☺
Hey from GA 💯❤😎👍
Perfect reactions from you both as always!
LEGEND !!!
THey were the best Freddie was amazing
Freddie was a big Elvis Presley fan
Nothing better!
Hola desde Argentina! Por favor reaccionen a "Somebody to love" live Montreal 1981. 😘😘😘
80,000 people plus
Smith & Jones two very funny funny men (Mel Smith & Griff Rhys-Jones).
Band member names:
Freddie Mercury
John Deacon
Roger Taylor
Brian May
have 187 subs and only 2 Did Kid Rock's Amen and they got so many views....Kid just spits the TRUTH in this song
I've watched about 50 different reactions to this concert and you two are the only ones that didn't know of "We are the Champions" GOODBYE!
7:19 I see you. Go ahead and move. Freddie does it to us all. No one can hear the music and not move to it.
Did you know that Freddie was born and raised in the African island of Zanzibar?
He was born in India, and then moved to Zanzibar after finishing primary school.
@@channe3049,
No, he wasn’t born in India. Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara in Stone Town, Zanzibar in 1946. His parents were born in India, but they were from the Parsi (Persian) community.
21:27 the strength and passion he puts into that
RIGHT into it...without any fanfare other than....
And to think the night before live aid he couldn't talk for like nearly 2 days also the fact he was battleing aids at the time he was taken waee to early I believe he invented the word legend
40 years later … STILL GOAT !
Fun Fact the Song Radio gaga was made by onne of th Gitarists of Queen.Story to it: his kis was standing near the Radio and sayd thous words Radio gaga
No, it was written by Roger Taylor, the drummer.
I always thought he looked his most handsome during this performance, and 8:14 is god like. Im sorry to the religious among us, i mean no disrespect but i like to think if im wrong and god is theres hes like "yah youre right. freddie was one of my best creations"
“She give me hot and cold fever and leaves me in a cold cold sweat” just fyi on crazy little thing called love✨
Was an image to Elvis.
Love the reaction, but you might want to consider lowering your mic input volume. It's a hell of a lot louder than the music itself haha
Pls dont interupt the magic that is Queen. Just watch the crowd. This is something you will never see again. Enjoy. X
Great reaction
The absolute G.O.A.T ...
Love queen ❤ A brother British man🙏
im new to the channel and i love it
To see Freddie here and compare his appearance just a few years later as AIDS took its toll was heartbreaking.
I hope what they're listening to is a better quality than what I'm hearing.
I have not understood much of what you have said but you guys are great :)
fantastic
How beautiful is this girl here - wow
