I broke Kraftwerk in the Chicago radio market on my show Triad during the 1970's. I had been playing their imports before Autobahn. Mercury records which Philips was a part of had their offices in Chicago and so they gave me test pressing of Autobahn before it was actually released. I tracked the whole side of Autobahn and the listeners lit up the phones right away. I got to interview Ralf and Florian when they came to the US for their first tour and got to write the liner notes on the pic sleeve of the Radioactivity single. When I viisited Germany in 1979 I stayed at Florian's apartment in Dusseldorf and got to see their Kling Klang Studio.

Amazing story. I would have been six years old when Autobahn was a minor hit in the states in 1975, but I have a memory of hearing it on the radio (in New York) back then, possibly in a broadcast alongside Abba and various disco acts from the time. Friends have told me this is impossible but I swear I did. My mom used to play a show like that a lot and I imagine when they played Autobahn they must have marketed it as some sort of novelty record.
When I was a kid I used to stay up every night and listen to Triad. Wonderful program and your announcer voice was hypnotic !!
@@sex6cult9revolution It wasn't a minor hit. It was a huge hit. It made it to #7 on the Billboard chart. But America wasn't really ready for them. I went to see them in Berkeley at this rock and roll dive called the Keystone. There were about fifty people there. And some guys in the back playing foosball. I knew they were pure genius. They really caught on in the black community-the hip hop guys loved Trans Europe Express- before crossing back into more mainstream acceptance.

What made this band even more special in the old days is they actually built their own electronic instruments and played them live.

Florian Schneider's father was a great architect. Florian was a musician, but maybe he inherited from his father an understanding of modern culture that is not accessible or easily understood to just simple musicians. Maybe this also made Kraftwerk SO much special.

What I like about them is they made their own electronic instruments and they are original sounding. They don’t sound American or British but they influenced everyone in electronic music.

I went to see the Chemical Brothers, there was no warm up band. Instead they played the album The Man Machine. It was musical heaven, respect to the Chemical Brothers

So did Simple Minds in Lund, Sweden in 1982. But i think it was partly because the band where delayed. Some driver took them to the wrong place, Olympen instead of AF.

My dad was stationed in German. When he came back home in '79 he brought home the LP Die Mensch-Mashine. I would listen to that for hours.

Around 11:15 there is a direct lift of the theme from the first movement of Paul Hindemith’s flute Sonata. But, I’m frankly glad to hear it. It’s a good riff from one of Hindemith’s best solo sonatas. Look it up and listen to it. You won’t regret it. I also highly recommend Hindemith’s Symphony in E flat. The second movement is a German blues Theme and variations like no other. For me, it is one of the best pieces of music of the 20th century.

20 years ago a friend of mine taped this album to me but didn't tell me its name. Tried to find out its title but without success. And then, suddenly, I clicked on this upload and... Yes, here it is!

I´m just now working on QCing my vinyl collection, so several nearly worn out favourites have been exchanged for audiophile pressings. But one thing I won´t get rid of is a pair of Yugo Beatles presses, made in Croatia in the 70s..
Same with the K-Werks..they won´t be leaving any time soon..

The same for me. This album is from 1995, so it's more than 20 years of creative propulsion from the first 70s. More than twice the length of the Beatles golden age.

Kraftwerk - Der Name sagt es schon. Besser konnte keine andere Band sein, wenn es seit Bestehen von Kraftwerk überhaupt solche Gruppen gegeben haben soll. Coole electronische Musk: Kraftwerk eben. Ein weiteres Lieblingsalbum von mir: Autobahn. Das Plattencover ist ebenfalls der Hammer !
Kraftwerk waren ja auch keine Musiker im eigentlichen Sinn sondern Soundkünstler und Klangtütfler. Hör dir mal Schiller an. Genial ohne bescheuerte Schlagertexte ;-))
I didn't hear this before, Kraftwerk were the band I first bought an actual 12" single, Space Lab, The Robots and Showroom Dummies... Space Lab was a miracle to me... Which I need to listen to right now

Ah! Brief appearance by Daevid Allen of Gong at the beginning of track 5, "Gentlemen...attention!" from "I Been Stone Before" off the Camembert Electrique LP! Agreed on the original TechnoPop version, sleek & elegant - I can hear both the Orchestron (voices) and the Synthanorma (plucked string sound from Europe Endless) in this one. A gem.

Hehe, Metropolis has nice references to the main theme of "Das Boot". Fun fact: Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk played the flute in Passport (Klaus Doldinger's band, composer of the score to "Das Boot") when he was young.
Surely one of the best ever Kraftwerk 'bootlegs'/ remixes ever , quite wunderbar und erstaunlich to one's ears, a sensory delight. Apparently this surfaced in 95 but I've only discovered it today, what a delight it's been, so much thanks ultimatesnake for posting this hidden gem.

I can't clearly remember when I last listened to a music record this length, from start to end without stopping. I have felt sort like pushed aback to when I was 12 yo (and I am 62 now) and listened The Man Machine album in a record shop, sitting on the floor with a schoolmate. This record is something like a book about Philosophy Of Sound. Very deep. Thank you.
