While the numbers of recruits decline, it sounds like bureaucracy and heavy paperwork/computer loads are significant issues for Gardai. Moreover, the wages do not seem commiserate with the dangerous aspects at the job. While the government is reluctant to raise salaries, as mentioned in this poscast, there is much more social unrest to contend with recently, as well as an increasing number of complaints to GSOC, among other crime issues arising countrywide. Perhaps it is time for AGS to consider employing more civilians to assist with the growing paperwork demands. Creating more employment opportunities for public while bolstering the Gardai seems like a win-win situation. Also, maybe Garda Reserves need to be trained and upskilled to assist in this capacity which would allow Gardai to pursue other investigations. It's just a thought...
