"Complete detachment" is why I still use one every day. Modded 512gb 6th gen, and working on a 128gb 4th gen rn. Biking to work, at the gym, on the bus, in the car, any time. No WiFi/data needed, long lasting battery, no notifications interrupting my music, higher quality sound and files vs Spotify and bluetooth headphones etc, just pure music. Plus I OWN my music. It can't disappear because record labels get weird/greedy.

As someone who still regularly uses a 3rd gen Nano for pleasure, a janky 1st gen Nano for when I do heavy duty work, and a 4th gen Shuffle very occasionally to prevent the battery from dying, let me tell you: synchronizing it’s not that burdensome when you already have playlists organized. It DOES take some effort to organize your music library in the first place, but it’s doable. I eschew music streaming services for the reasons given on the video, and due to the fact that mobile data is both unreliable and expensive where I live, so, keeping an offline dedicated music player is totally viable in 2023 and beyond, specially for those who don’t live in a first world country.

I recently visited Japan and was able to buy a 6th gen silver iPod classic for $40. It was marked as junk, so I didn’t expect it to work. But to my surprise, it did work, and it looks rather decent aesthetically.
I very much agree about how the experience of it is different from listening to music on your phone. Great video!

I bought a 3rd gen classic off of ebay listed as untested and once it worked perfectly, even still had the lats person's music still on it. Its a great iPod. The LEDs on the buttons look amazing and I love the in-line remote that it is compatible with, and because of this remote I am looking at getting a 4th gen classic at some point

Great summary of why the iPod is still great. For me, the 7th gen 160gb is the best daily driver iPod. I love the sound of the 5.5 videos but they lack the RAM to shuffle large libraries. The 4th gens are awesome because you can always see what's playing and they sound great.

I recently revived my 15 year old ipod classic 6th gen and it still has all ~13k songs I put on it all those years ago. The nostalgic feeling and the fact that I'm listening to all my favorite tracks which I carefully curated back in 2008-2009 is just mindblowing for me. Now I only have an apple music subscription just to keep up with the newer music which I miiiiight like 😂 I really hope Apple would revive ipod classic line but with more storage and bluetooth feature, especially for us who don't have easy access to modded ipod 😬

If that's the experience you're after, then there's 2 better routes, depending on your desire: is it less on audio quality, and more on the experience (tactile, immersed in only music, etc) and retro? If so, just get a walkman, and have some fun making mixtapes. And if it's quality you want, while having that same iPod convenience, AND experience of being disconnected from all your smartphone stuff/internet, etc., then... get an actually decent DAP. One made today. It's basically an iPod. But better. With more storage. And sync w/ your local NAS library and or streaming service if you want, too

I never owned an iPod Classic growing up (born in 2001) I'm seriously considering getting either a modded 5.5 gen or a modded 7th gen. A rule I've given myself is I'll only spend what they cost at launch the exception to this is, that it's slightly more expensive because it has Bluetooth or USB-C.

Having your own (self) curated collection of music is a much more enjoyable experience. I’ve found that the unlimited access in streaming creates a kind of decision overload. Having your own collection on an iPod is a much more interactive experience, and provides a connection to the process. Overall I find it more engaging and satisfying - I just don’t particularly enjoy Spotify or Apple Music - except perhaps for a playlist for workouts.

More than 10yrs later I'm still salty that my 160gb iPod Classic was stolen from a changing room when it had slipped out of my pocket and I didn't notice for 5, maybe 10 minutes. It also needs to be said how good iTunes was too, in particular Genius Playlists, when I upgraded to an M1 Mac and was forced to migrate to the Music app... I was shocked by how much worse it is than iTunes. The only real downside to the Classic was the relatively sharp edge of the front of the device would gradually cut it's way through your jeans pockets if you didn't put it in a case or sleeve or some sort.

Been there, done that. Mine now sits in a dock in my HiFi system, rarely used. Mostly I now use it as an audio source when testing equipment that is not conveniently near a computer etc.
I can't say I've had any real trouble with iTunes, However I hate their flat file system, where the only thing separating tracks is a play list. I usually store my music in artist/album folders on my PC, and having to lose all that in iTunes to feed the iPod (or iPhone) is crap.
I've never got enthused by the streaming services, and social media .... I can easily go a week or two without it.
Most of my music lives on a NAS, and my iPhone is often just a remote used to drive my Volumio network player.

    • @HieronymusChockvivantvanit

I don't understand. There is an iTunes switch that allows me to store music on my computer any way I want. I store it hierarchically by genre/artist/album for the most part. (genre is broad categories like classical, pop, big band, bluegrass, bossa nova, etc.) Then I organize it in iTunes with a playlist for each artist. No problem. I have a Mac; maybe you are using iTunes in Windows?
