The best thing I ever did for my push up form was the following: Before you start, when you are in position ready to go, and a few times during the set to remind yourself- just imagine for a moment that instead of lowering and raising your body, you are actually about to push something, like a car or another person. I find when I do this, I automatically tense and solidify the rest of my body. If you were pushing a car, you wouldn't let your shoulders go back or your lower back arch back, would you? Can you imagine? You intuitively know that to move something heavy your whole body has to be solid. Conversely, when you are just lowering and raising your body in your mind, there is a tendency to let your body go too floppy, because you are thinking of your body as the thing you are moving, and thus a passive object. Not just for push ups either, but most body weight exercises. I'm not pulling myself up to the pull up bar, I'm pulling the ceiling down towards me. Obviously I'm not really, but my back doesn't need to know that. The second best thing I ever did for my push up form was to grip the floor with my hands/fingers, rather than just thinking of my hands as being passive.

This video is incredibly thorough and definitely worth the watch. I'm a young female black belt and I've been doing pushups for a long time. While healing from an injury, I barely did any pushups for about six months, and have finally started working my pushups again pretty recently. While I already know proper form, it's always refreshing to see it taught again from other perspectives. Some of the exercises in this video are going to be very useful for my progression, and I've also picked up some things to incorporate when teaching classes. I'm very impressed with this video and with the instructor. I love how she's empowering women! I'll definitely be coming back to this channel!
I think she's just pointing out that it's not about being a boy or girl when doing pushups poorly, but about knowing where the power comes from to do a proper one regardless.
Came across this video by Massy and was immediately impressed by her detailed instruction and her knowledge on the pushup. I just subcribed. Thanks Massy. I'm a 65 y.o. Army vet trying to get back at being able to do at least one full correct form pushup. I used to do pushups by the hundreds when I was young and in the Army but Father Time has taken its toll on my body. Can't wait to see her other videos!
Quality video- Great explanation. My Thoughts: I wouldn't call this a perfect progression but a different one to explore. I get the marketing(I STILL LIKE THE ATTACK THOUGH on the TOPIC) but It doesn't apply to all women or beginners. Unless I missed you saying in the video. For example, I had members who could out plank for days but still couldn't press their bodyweight. I think planks should act as superset/ Finisher/warmup / accessory move. More time should be in practicing the actual skill through different leverage points, like the incline push up point you demonstrated. If someone can do more than 12 modified push ups then Its is time for the next level. Basically lower down the incline as their getting stronger. I did love the tension cueing from the toes and utilizing the whole body through muscle Irradiation. I don't think MODIFIED push up should be demonized, it has it place for certain individuals, heck I'm not ashamed to go on my knees, IF I'm focusing on endurance at that time. I acutally get pissed when someone calls it a girl pushup--it's usually my female clients that would say I only can do "girl push up". A push up is a push up and theirs variations lol. Also beginners and some women just happen get stuck in modified push up for so long, IMO most exercise programs don't add enough push ups for one to get good at it. Do specific training to get specific results I also say. I always recommend to my clients that at home, if a Beginner or a desire to do clean push up, you they should work on their push up progression level 3-4x a week/ 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps. FYI i just want to make sure someone who see this understands it's ok not to be perfect and it's ok to get on your knees and push ups
Thank you! I struggle with doing push ups though I can hold a plank longer than any other man or woman I know. I just can’t push my body up. I’ll try as suggested!
@@kswz7991 you can also work on lowering down in the plank position, and press up with proper form on your knees (making sure your core is still engaged). That's really worked for some of my clients to get a full pushup.
k swz yes if you follow her tips with tensing the body and mines you will get there in no time. A fun way to get it going is to do a 30 day challenge. Pick your push-up progression level (incline push up) do 10-20 per day.
This is the BEST instruction video to train pushups. Not only for girls but for everyone, even me (I can do 30 pushups on a row) because it has so many details that I've never conscious about before. And your presentation, with a lot of passion and grace, is pleasant to watch.. .. Also like the introduction with throwing the ball.... the kinetics part of the story.
Beautiful, everything was so clear I loved your way of explaining the mechanism and the different variations! Since this video was so inspirational I'd love to see something similar about pull-ups! I'm aiming at doing my first pull-up but don't know where to start, just building some strength in my upper body (so weak right now) with pull-down machine, but didn't see much of an improvement! I'm sure you will have better advice to give us! Thank you and keep going! 💪
Noted! Taking notes. Will try to shoot it for the next couple of weeks. But the pull up as well starts at the core. And one of the things to keep in mind is that you’ll have to hang and be able to support your body weight. Practice supported hangs or hanging engaging your scapulas. If the push up requires you to be able to support your body weight prone to the floor, then for the pull up you’ll have to support your body weight with the gravity of your body weight pulling you down.
OMG i actually cant believe i just did my first pushup after trying it at 3:47... I've been training for the past 3 months to prep for going into the military and I couldn't get out of doing modified push ups... wow, to think I was never engaging my whole body. THANK YOU SO MUCH

The main thing I picked up from this video: I have to admit that I'm at a beginner level. HAHA Time to build up from a better foundation. Thank you for this!
People in the comments stop being over dramatic about the term “girl push-ups”. It’s just called that because many people in schools make girls do those kind of push-ups or call it that. We all know what it means. We know she’s not saying those push-ups are meant for women. Understand the context and move on.

Good video. My push ups only began to suck after an injury and other health issues that weakened my hamstrings, butt and lower back. When all of those got soft, so did my push ups. It's the same way that abs look better when your back and butt are strong. Overall health and strength give you the best results with any workout. Also, a weak core leads to SO many problems. Great video again!
Omg it works! I thought my arms are just really weak but it turns out I was just not using my body properly when I do push up. Thank you so much! You're amazing!
It's a bad tutorial for real... just do push ups with hands on a high surface. If you have to as high as a table but keep the good form. Once you can do 5-10 reps try to get to a little lower surface even if just for 1-3 push ups and then you cna still use the rest of your energy on the first surface that was higher until you can do 5-10 on the lower one and slowly work yourself towards the floor
This was the IDEAL TUTORIAL VIDEO that i NEEDED when I was Fitness Prepping for Navy Boot Camp. She hits all important concepts. Best explaination, adaptations demonstration, and motivation!
Awesome!! I had never seen before some of these progression exercises and I'm sure they will help. Editing 3 months later: I can now do proper pushups!!!! thanks!!!!
Thank you, Thank you! I didn't manage to do even one push-up even though I have been doing strength training for about 6 months, and I'm doing very well with planks. After watching your video I understood my position was wrong, and that I needed to tighten my core muscles. It's wasn't easy to learn, and I needed to concentrate on squeezing, but for the first time ever I managed to do 7 push-ups today.

I tried your tips just as I was watching the video, I didn't get the pushup but it was much better than what I had been doing. Thanks a lot! I subscribed to your channel because of this video, I also liked it too
put 2 dumbbells down and grip them when doing pushups instead of putting your palm on the ground thumbs facing up so the dumbbells would be placed like this "I I" rather than "-- --" also there is nothing wrong with doing knee pushups (especially if you have a wrist injury) its just another variation of a movement that has hundreds of different variations that are all good for different things
I had the same problem, and the solution for me was to "try to grip the ground", that way you are using the muscles on your hands and arms to keep you up, instead of resting all your weight on your bones and joints. Works for nearly every joint; if it hurts, you are probably not using the muscles around it and they're making all the work.
Yes and Thank you👏. As I grow older, I want to improve my strength. However, I find it difficult to do a push up because I am overweight. Thank you so much for teaching me in stages.👌

Listen carefully to the cues I give you on those planks. Follow the same progression. Three times a week. Holding for those seconds and working up to a minute.

Your teaching seems focused on a certain group of people who are just starting, however despite working out for years and being more than capable of doing 50 push ups without an issue, I definitely have learned a thing or two from you as well.

The title sounds a bit sexist but when u get into the video it's 100% positive content
What's sexist is telling women to do the "girl pushups" because they "can't do the real ones".
@@hobog12777
No, the sexism is calling any type of movement a "girl" one.
@@ikmor thing is, for girls, even in schools, this is called a girl pushup. Nothing sexist about it, its just something to classify a pushup done by a girl in schools during physical education, because generally girls are weaker than guys at that time in life
@@ikmor Yeah, there is inherent sexism in naming this form a "girl pushup". But that's what it's called so the title can't really call it anything else.
I get what all of you guys are saying but the "girl pushup" is technically called a modified pushup. So the term is sexist. Not that it bothers me in the least given that this content is positive

Push through the floor. Learning how to work the muscles in unison is athletic movement. All too often we are though to isolate. Of course that has it's place also. Incorporating athletic movements however into your routine will provide huge muscular engagement and help with everyday mobility.

My Thoughts:
I wouldn't call this a perfect progression but a different one to explore.
Totally agree
Ash agreed and great point with this variation
@@Mankofit Great! And thank you for this tips! 🤗

Oh this is gonna be hard for me. Seeing as i'm obese and my upper arm strength is non-existent.
Wrong, you have decent upper body strength, your just obese
It's a bad tutorial for real... just do push ups with hands on a high surface. If you have to as high as a table but keep the good form. Once you can do 5-10 reps try to get to a little lower surface even if just for 1-3 push ups and then you cna still use the rest of your energy on the first surface that was higher until you can do 5-10 on the lower one and slowly work yourself towards the floor

My problem is I have weak wrists. I used to play tennis and had to stop bc I had so much wrist pain. Any suggestions?
put 2 dumbbells down and grip them when doing pushups instead of putting your palm on the ground
thumbs facing up so the dumbbells would be placed like this "I I" rather than "-- --"
also there is nothing wrong with doing knee pushups (especially if you have a wrist injury) its just another variation of a movement that has hundreds of different variations that are all good for different things
And don't forget to warm up before push up, also don't hesitate to consult a specialist if your wrists still hurt!
Trinity Get a push-up board
work them out every day and warm up before training.
i used to have same problem
I had the same problem, and the solution for me was to "try to grip the ground", that way you are using the muscles on your hands and arms to keep you up, instead of resting all your weight on your bones and joints.
Works for nearly every joint; if it hurts, you are probably not using the muscles around it and they're making all the work.
