"it's easier to be the judge than the judged" is something I always remind myself. I think it's great to have different opinions and it's even cooler that we get to express them freely on a great platform like this - so I respect your take. But I look forward to seeing the output and results more so than a well scripted nag. Seriously though - I do like your presentation style so I'm genuinely interested to see if you can make something new with your content :)
Great Video! I pretty much agree with everything you brought up here. I think the hype/gold rush of photography on social media is coming to an end. I started shooting back around 2017 and seeing how much things have changed over the years has been really interesting to watch. I honestly see less and less of the "trendy" photography stuff on any of my feeds these days. Which I think is great to be honest. I think we are now moving into the era of creators being more authentic and creating what they want to make and finding people who resonate with them.
Thank you! And yes exactly- I think every “typical” kind of video has been made ad infinitum and now it’s super exciting to see people lean into themselves more. That’s what I’m hoping to do, and I’d love if more people did as well. I think it’d be a generally very positive thing for the art form
I really want to know how creators scout locations or come up with ideas for photos. The vision of the phorographer is so much more important than gear.
Its an overall issue with UA-cam content in my opinion. Low hanging fruit and marketing opportunities are the most abundant videos on the platform now. I'd much rather see amateur videos attempting to tell a story than a highly polished ad in the format of a vlog. It's sad. It makes hobbies seem like a commodity and having fun something you have to earn.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to make different content but lecturing the world about how to make a sustainable youtube channel when you’ve made 8 videos is crazy. I guess when you consider that you’re also selling a signed book and no one knows who you are it also makes sense. Chill with the self congratulatory stuff.
Glad you mentioned Ted Forbes. As you talked about some of the videos you wanted to see, his name popped into my mind right away. I'm just starting on building my photography channel (I still need to edit and post my Hello video) and I appreciate learning what other people want to see. I've added a few ideas to my list of potential video subjects from it.
Great point, honestly photography nowadays more like how much your gear cost and how much view you get on your social media. For me photography is like an art, you don't have to use the best canvas to make a great painting, but you do need skill and that what makes photography great to me
Core conceit is that a lot of photographers don't feel like taking photos is enough anymore. Unless you are also making content about making things, then you're not actually making anything. That's a problem.
i think it's great to complain and raise awareness about all these things but when your content output just isn't there yet i dont think you are offering a compelling alternative to bring people over to your channel. " making things that are actually thoughtful, that have care, that exude passion for the medium..." are all things you aim for yet i dont see quite yet. I think it's great that you have the initiative there to go after more than your average photo youtuber but one can be overzealous and push out projects that are undercooked. Just because you're taking stuff on a leica and it makes you feel like a serious photographer (not that you aren't one) doesn't mean that you're necessarily ready to make the big jump into making and selling a book. in the end it can hurt your image if you aren't a careful curator of your own work, in photography i think more than half the work is picking and choosing what to show and knowing when you have a good body of work to share. if you lack in this aspect you can give people the wrong impression of "is this really your best? why would i want more?". i know this isn't what you expected to see as a response to this video but i think you have to make a good impression if you are going to go up against the status quo.
I’m confused as to why you’re conflating my channel with the book I put out. I’ve already made and sold out my first a couple years ago and shot this new one over the last 5 years before I even got into this new wave of videos on my channel. I’ve been posting on other platforms for years now and have been photographing for the majority of the last decade now. My books are my main focus, and this channel, like all other platforms I’m on, are just extensions of me and my work. Me shooting on a Leica doesn’t matter at all either? Just a camera that makes me excited to shoot. I felt the same way about my first $20 TLR. I totally understand not liking the content of this video, the tone, whatever. That’s everyone’s prerogative. Nobody has to like me or anything I do. So it goes.
@@matthewrygh my problem isn't that you're putting out a book, if you read my comment this was about the content you're featuring on this channel, your book, and instagram. The point being that it's weak work that might not merit a book yet but if you feel as though it helps you maintain a goal then so be it. The main point im driving at is that you seem very inexperienced and if you're going to present yourself as the alternative to the sea of copy cat photography youtubers then you best bring strong work and good informative content that as you say is "actually thoughtful, that have care, that exude passion for the medium" and so far i can only see that you have the enthusiasm to make videos but not much else. Channel that drive to make better work and spend less energy making short essays on why everyone else is pushing out the wrong content and actually push out strong content that fosters growth in others. if people are in the comments are complaining about your content, turn that into a learning experience that you might need to cook things a little more.
@@ti2809that’s a lot of words to boil down to you just don’t like the work I do, which is fine. Not everyone will. My goal is always to put my best work into my books and not onto social media. Spoils the purpose of the books. Don’t particularly care for what random folks have to say online so feel free to watch, not watch, whatever. Just gonna keep doing my thing
@matthewrygh "not caring what random people say online" while posting content for random people to consume is a weird flex. You can store your videos on a harddrive without publishing them to YT. I think you took offense to the OP comment when it wasn't at all offensive. It was quite thoughtful. Cheers 🤜🏾🤛🏻.
Everything I make is because I like it. I put it out because other people may like it. The people that like it are my target demographic. If you don’t like it, you’re not my target demographic. Hope this helps ❤️
Hey Matthew, my name is Johnny and I'm a freelance logo designer, currently I'm looking for more works, do you love to have a logo for your channel's branding to have a memorable graphic based monogram logo to help your audience recognise and follow your channel easier? I would love to design a photography themed logo inspired by your direction for you! Let me know if you interested to make it happen! :-)
And just what exactly makes you the authority of what others consume? Let me key you into a real life lesson: you aren't special, you aren't important, your ideas have already been done and beat to death. I just love when 19 year old looking goofies tell the rest of the world how special and unique they are, and how everyone is beneath them. This is nearly comedy.
I’m not special, I’m not an authority, you don’t have to watch what I make, I’m merely outlining what I’m gonna make and why. I’m not telling anyone what to watch either. Maybe my ideas and opinions suck and nobody will watch. No need to get so pissy about something you have no requirement to participate in. If you don’t like this, you obviously aren’t my target demographic.
@matthewrygh "photography content is dead" followed by a pretentious video about how you're content is going to be breaking the stalemate of current content determines all that was just yapping. But I do like your video style ngl
Being pretentious is just having goals higher than your present skill set. If I have to choose, I’d rather be that than succumb to the mediocrity of the status quo from the jump. This is one of the first videos on my channel, so of course I’m going to project into the future what I’m going to try and make. It’s just called having goals and ambitions. I’ve been making videos for years now and have consumed a copious amount of other people’s work as well. I’ve had my work viewed by tens of millions of people already. Through all this, I know what I like, what I don’t, and who I think will like it. So it’s just about making that fit. If you’re not one of them, that’s absolutely fine by me.
@matthewrygh yeah sure, and like I said you make good content. My problem with this particular video is you projecting your sense of quality onto everyone else, it's parking very close to some sort of supremacy complex you may or may not have. Also as an aside, basing your self worth on the amount of views you get from literal teenagers on youtube might not be a good idea long term.
I really feel like the only gear reviews worth watching are "I've used this for 10 years and am making this video because I love it" and not whatever the latest fad is. Sure that new gear content is great when you're in the market for a new camera, but I don't need 10 different videos that are just reading spec sheets.
idk bro, there's plenty of cool photography channels that seems to really push their craft here in youtube and they didn't feel the need to post something like this. like i don't want to bash you or anything but this seems unnecessary, to claim with such a broad brush stroke, that photography yt is in some dire need of saving. of course it's your opinion and i respect that, but maybe this could have been an internal thing, something to encompass or become the ethos of your channel without like advertising it so upfront. like let the work speak for itself idk.
Man i get it, you want to express your opinion but i don't think it's your time right now. What have you to offer back that is better than all the stuff you are raging over? I checked your photography and a lot of your photos don't even have a straight horizon. Anyway i wold suggest you yo leave your ego on the side. No offence.
