Brian Knapp The opening of the first movement of this string quartet is arguably the greatest, most memorable, and most sublime opening of any piece of chamber music by any composer; the rest of the quartet maintains the inspirational level throughout. Haydn’s Opus 76 as a whole has never really been surpassed since it was written, and only equalled occasionally.
It is an incredible performance. Everything is polished and a joy to listen. They were one of the best string quartet ever! - The Tokyo String Quartet was at the same level - Thank for posting it.
My favourite Haydn quartets: Op 1 No 4, Op 71 No 2, Op 71 No 3 & this, Op 76 No 4 plus about 4 others whose opus numbers I forget. And when it's the Amadeus Quartet playing as well, my cup runneth over!
This quartet is named "sunrise" because of the initial melody which seem to emerge from a soft and mysterious chord. In fact, this feature is not prevailing in the first movement, but this beginning stuck the first listeners. It is a very beautiful quartet, firmly built. The interpretation is excellent.
Please excuse me, however I think you meant the first listeners were "struck" by the opening, yes? I also (despite being a flutist and pianist) love this piece from the very first time I heard it.
The Amadeus quartet is the origin of a tradition of excellence in he interpretation of Haydn's quartets. Even if we find a bit ridiculous this idea to give a surname to Haydn's quartets and symphonies, we must confess that the rise of the first violin above the chord of the three other instruments is magical. Certainaly thanks to the example of the Amadeus quartet, we find more and more convincing quartets in the interpretation of Haydn.
"The origin of a tradition of excellence": you may be a little unfair to the (still alive!) Quatuor pro Arte, which recorded no less than 29 of Haydn's string quartets between 1931 and 1938! (EMI References, PM 916, 8 LP records.)
Definitely my favourite string quartet. This is truly divine music.
아름답습니다 🎉🎉🎉

No me gusta. Más parece música romántica. Es estridente.
