That's one of the cases where a port is better than the arcade-original, even the graphics are superior. It's five years difference between those two versions but it's also a strange fact that an expensive arcade machine got beaten by a 16bit home system cartridge...
It's not really a rare case... stuff like this depends on the dev team handling the home version... one could assume that the Data East arcade staff or some of them were involved with the Sega MegaDrive version five years later and they dug into the metal of the hardware to make full use of the processors and sound chips given any perceived limitations of the ROM Cartridge size... which is another factor since by 1990, 8 Megabit Strider hit the MegaDrive and by 1992 16 Megabits hit the Super FamiCom or Super Nintendo with Street Fighter II... I can't recall which Sega MegaDrive game hit 16 Megabits first or what year but they reached 24 Megabit rom cartridge size in 1993... Regardless of the rom cartridge size you have the fine example of the 32 Megabit "Rise of the Robots" game which iirc came out in 1994... then compare to the effort put into this game... because this was basically Data East's AAA team... Even though it's based on the 1988 arcade game it makes you wonder and research what games Data East did next... Also don't underestimate the hardware of the 1988 released Sega MegaDrive hardware... on paper it has good specs but you still need some hardcore coders to to craft amazing quality games... Yuji Naka was the lead programmer of Ghosts n Ghouls for example so when he got started with Sonic the Hedgehog 1 he had extensive experience with the hardware and just kept nearly doubling the performance potential with every sequel... including Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles which featured some highly fluid 2d sprite pixel animation and full use of the sound system and blazing speed... Then you see some other game like Chakkan and it's utter garbage that Sega of America's staff tricked us into buying instead of translating many of the advanced MegaDrive games that were coming out in Japan like Busterhawk GleyLancer... a game that could have become a big name with hardcore Sega owners in North America and that game was a 1992 release too that can make you see R-Type as an old game and wonder why GleyLancer wasn't made for the arcades using the MegaDrive hardware... Which is another point... The Sega SG-1000, the Sega Mark III, the Sega MegaDrive and the Sega Saturn were all designed and engineered by Sega's internal arcade division staff for the purpose of mass production consumer hardware... aka lower cost as opposed to the much higher cost arcade boards... Even the Sega Saturn is another board which dramatically increases performance with the 4MB RAM Cartridge that unfortunately was not made right away or decided to be required for Sega's internal dev teams... Could you imagine the 4MB RAM Cartridge being required for Nights Into Dreams and Fighting Vipers in 1996... it would have been a shocker especially when Sony was cutting expansion ports around then but the problem with the Sega Saturn is the bad management of Sega of America's staff... The same reason this game isn't a bigger or well known MegaDrive classic because around 1992 onwards Sega of America's staff kept trying to bring more Disney character games and chase the kiddie market which is what hurt the image of the MegaDrive as a high speed, high performance home system.
I remember renting this on Mega Drive back in the day and enjoying it. Wasn't until about 20 years later I found out it was originally an arcade game. ☠️
The Genesis version looked great. The running animation looked pretty smooth. There were stages that had a lot of parallax scrolling. Bosses were animated and articulate especially the final boss's walk cycle. Little things made it stand out like the eyes on statues in stage 3 moved back and forth.
In fairness, they did have another 5 years to produce this version of the game, so it's not an apples to apples comparison. It's kinda like comparing Super Street Fighter 2 The New Challengers to the original Street Fighter.

7:51 Wait for it... (Ooh!) (Hah!) (Ooh!) (Hah!) (Hah!) (UUH!) Few Mega Drive games played PCM in other than centre, however this one not only shifts between left/right/centre like it's going out of fashion, but has really decent percussion to go along with it - channel 6 had one job, and it did it well. Sadly, as this is a comparison video, the output is shifted into mono.
This is one of the games where the console port is superior to its original arcade counterpart. I owned this game. And while I knew the original arcade game, I still don't want to download the original arcade version on MAME, since the Sega 16-bit version is better.
Yeah, not even a contest, the Genny version is superior in every way. The fact that each stage has its own unique song alone gives it the edge in that department. Each stage being redesigned from the ground up to take advantage of the Genny's strengths is also a treat. Without a doubt, it's the definitive way to experience this game.
The arcade version brings me lot of nostalgia because is the one I played as a kid, but the console port looks much better. Overall: - Despise all the different environment between both versions, the level design is the same!! That’s very interesting. - console port has lot of stages based on different cultures around the world, that fact alone makes it a more interesting game. - the arcade Chelnov is just a “coal miner” lol, while the port version has a far more interesting story. - sadly, the port is missing the cute iron mask dinosaur!!! (They used a more boring Polynesian style dragon design instead). - but for me, the arcade music is still better, despise having far less songs.
jajaja so funny how they mixed almost every mexican ancient culture.. tenochtitlan main emple called "templo mayor", olmec heads, mayan piramids, the Chichen Itzá´s astronomy abservatory , that feathered snake is called "quetzalcoatl" by aztecs and "kukulcan" by the mayans etc etc
How is this dude able to go from the USSR to the USA without crossing an ocean? And from what I read on the internet, Chelnov is Karnov's brother. WTF? I think Data East likes to shit post with their games. lol
One of the uncommon case when the conversion is superior than the arcade version itself. The original one was really horrible, with a ridiculous story.

Now this is rare, seeing a port that's actually _better_ than the original arcade version.
The MD/Gen port is truly a beautiful game. Love how creative the programmers got with the backgrounds. Love the use of Gaudi's architecture in stage 6

right, a rare cool case
Forgetting not this fact, the port has an interesting story unlike the arcade.
Too bad we didn't get an improved Karnov on the Genesis/Megadrive to go with it.
