How to Identify Poisonous Jack O'Lantern Mushrooms!

- Seeing a distant flash of bright orange amongst the greens of late summer / early fall can be exciting for those of us looking for chanterelles, but this mushroom offers no promise of a good meal. However, there are a few things that distinguish this fungus from our edible favorites.
Jack o’ Lantern mushrooms (Omphalotus illudens) have true gills that hang in neat rows under the cap and grow in clusters like oyster mushrooms from decaying wood and stumps, whereas chanterelles grow singly or in loose associations directly from the forest floor. While it looks like they are growing directly from the soil, they are actually growing on dead or decaying wood just below the surface. That’s why it’s important to consider all field marks when identifying mushrooms.
These Jacks were found next door to North Spore in Portland, Maine! 🎃

One way i check is by peeling them like string cheese. Chantelles peel easily like that.
Nice tip, I'll keep that in mind.
Thank you for stating all mushrooms are safe to touch. I've always worried about that and it's been one of the fears I've had in learning to forage.
Some of us are allergic and can not handle wild mushroom varieties, so make these decisions mindfully. I learned as a toddler(backyard mushroom caused severe hay fever and hives) the lesson stuck.
Are you telling me that I can have my glow in the dark fairy garden closer to reality?!
Yes, exactly.
Step number one, if it grows in a huge cluster its probably not a cow.
When she said, “All mushrooms are safe to touch” I thought, is that true? What I found is yes it’s true! So wild that out of the thousands of different species, they’re all safe to hold!
The only one that people aren’t sure about touching is called Podostroma cornu-damae. Although its ability to harm you by touch is unconfirmed and believed to be a rumor.
I wonder if the "rumor" thing is like poison ivy where some are sensitized to it and others not
Found a basketball sized patch of them on an old stump deep in the woods as a kid in upstate NY, but couldn’t find them again. Now I want to go find them again just to hang my hammock up for the night to see the lumens!
I've found some huge jack o lantern mushrooms in socal last year. Really cool mushrooms even if you can't eat it
more people should know about this channel this video is rlly good!
I have a cousin who ate them once..boy did he regret that..he assumed he was getting chantrels
I went foraging today and found Laccaria Lacata and Imleria Badia! Going into a stew tomorrow with beef and potato! Yumm!
They glow!!!
replacing pumpkins for these
I'd be orders of magnitudes more pleased to find GLOWING MUSHROOMS, instead of edible mushrooms. 😎 💚💚💚
Oh wow, i didn’t know shrooms are all safe to touch. I've always been too paranoid about the poison and spores.
Jacks will always be growing on wood, never soil. The wood may be buried so be careful. Also Jacks have true gills while chanterelles do NOT.
I haven’t seen them, but a way for identifying poisonous mushrooms is if they have a ring around it or if the bottom of the cap is light. Destroying angel and death cap have one of these to identify it.
This is actually untrue. There is no definitive rule like this to classify a mushroom as poisonous. It's unfortunately more complicated and requires understanding a genus and the rules within it. Sometimes, it really comes down to knowing the individual species. Other times, edibility is just unknown.
I never knew they were all safe to touch! Cool!
The smell is really sweet and like a flower.. they will not kill you but make you sick.so don't let people like this make you fear mushrooms... I have ate these before vomited for one hour
No one:
German Jack o lantern mushrooms:Ölbaumpilz bro it's literally oil tree mushroom
I hear it causes mild hallucinations with extreme diarrhea and gastral pain. No fun
Awesome
They glow with UV and moon light!!!!
Thank you ❤
Add them to garden compost for a kick of phosphorus
Thank you so much for such a great video!!
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
May god bless the people who all tasted these mushrooms and told us that these are poisonous
Beautiful!
The last part ❤
I ate chantelles in ohio they tasted really good once cooked ❤
Thanks for that info 💚
I love smacking the tops of mushrooms. Bouncy bouncy bouncy!😂
I call them false chanterelles. They sometimes emit a deep orange ooze that smells sweet
Thanks for information 👏
You're welcome! :)
I beleive there is at least one mushroom that is NOT safe to touch.

I can just look and see the differences.
These would make nice lamps for the lawn
They grow in clusters like ringless honeys?? Beginner question
We had these at work and they didn't glow. I was really disappointed
Lobster Mushrooms ofen confused too
It looks so tasty I'm mad I can't eat it.
Never in a million years could they be mistaken for chanterelles
Unfortunately it does happen.
How to grow medicinal mushrooms?
We have a ton of info about this at northspore.com!
what if i accidentally lick my fingers afterwards?
You'll be fine. The mushroom itself needs to be ingested.
Jacque
If this look a like or confuse you then you really need go study more or stay away from wild fungus all together.
Such decretive shroom yet so deadly
What in the Alice's Advertures in Wonderland is this ish?
Mushrooms are nuts!
This question was asked in 2023 UPSC
they look yummy😢
But there sooo pretty
Do u think u could grow morels this way?
We're working on it!
Check out the Danish Morel Project, they've dialed it down to a science.
How to new that a new mushrooms is good to eat or it's can kill you , I new of family how all are kill by 🍄.
Not if i have anything to say about it...
Or just don’t go picking random mushrooms
Look up the big laughing Jim... your welcome.
Yeah, some gymnopilus contain psilocybin and psilocin. It's pretty neat. I believe there is actually a species of gymnopilus that has a mystery psychoactive compound that is not psilocin or psilocybin, but I couldn't find which species it was for confirmation. If anyone could refresh my memory that would be awesome
I don't have any orange mushrooms but lots that grow from rotting wood. I think most of them do. I just eat a tiny bit at first and see what happens. Some I've eaten quite a bit. No major problems yet.
I would advise against that! there are some deadly poisonous mushrooms that grow on rotten wood, notedly, Galerina marginata (or autumnalis). Don't consume something you haven't properly identified first!
@NorthSpore Eating too much beet greens at once almost did me in a year ago. Weird cause no one says anything about that. That experience showed me again. Moderation, no matter what they say. In the case of mushrooms, I don't know, I'm a cautious nibbler. Same with the weeds. This is where i live. It's cold. It's northwest Canada. I'm learning from the land. Sometimes, it smacks me down. That's life....
Dude this is dangerous and nibbling on them isn't gonna tell you anything. All mushrooms need to be cooked to be edible, so you aren't going to identify anything unless you also learn how to properly identify them with a book
You aren't going to die from a nibble but it could cause a fair amount of pain
@@gmw3083that's absolutely pointless. We have science for a reason dude.
Too much talking. Just put them side by side and show the difference.
We could actually reed all those differences. What we need is to see.
Eat it
Noooooo
Was ur hands before you touch ur mouth tho stil
