The notorious death cap mushroom causes poisonings and deaths around the world. If you were to eat these unassuming greenish mushrooms by mistake, you wouldn’t know your liver is in trouble until several hours later. The death cap has been spreading across California. Can scientists find a way to stop it?

Where do death cap mushrooms grow?
In California, they grow mainly under coast live oaks. They have also been found under pines, and in Yosemite Valley under black oaks.
Why do death caps grow under trees?
As many fungi do, death cap mushrooms live off of trees, in what’s called a mycorrhizal relationship. They send filaments deep down to the trees’ roots, where they attach to the very thin root tips. The fungi absorb sugars from the trees and give them nutrients in exchange.
Where do California’s death cap mushrooms come from?
Biologist Anne Pringle, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, has done research that shows that death caps likely snuck into California from Europe attached to the roots of imported plants, as early as 1938.
How deadly are death cap mushrooms?
Between 2010 and 2015, five people died in California and 57 became sick after eating the unassuming greenish mushrooms, according to the California Poison Control System. One mushroom cap is enough to kill a human being, and they’re also poisonous to dogs. Death caps are believed to be the number one cause of fatal mushroom poisonings worldwide.
What happens if you eat a death cap mushroom?
A toxin in the mushroom destroys your liver cells. Dr. Kent Olson, co-medical director of the San Francisco Division of the California Poison Control System, said that for the first six to 12 hours after they eat the mushroom, victims of the death cap feel fine. During that time, a toxin in the mushroom is quietly injuring their liver cells. Patients then develop severe abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. “They can become very rapidly dehydrated from the fluid losses,” said Olson. Dehydration can cause kidney failure, which compounds the damage to the liver. For the most severe cases, the only way to save the patient is a liver transplant.

In France, every pharmacist (yes, pharmacist) must also be a trained mycologist, so you can bring wild mushrooms to any drug store and the pharmacist has the training and knowledge to tell you which ones are safe.
Yet they can't tell a girolle from a chanterelle.
Pharmacists originally dealt with herbs and medicinal plants from natural world. They were apothecary or posologist or even witches.
France sucks. Heres an idea, educate yourself so you can have that knowledge and power for yourself.
Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. The new generation of pharmacists get a very basic understanding of the subject, and very few are interested enough to become what you call a 'trained mycologist', let alone identify anything other than the commonly encountered 'best of' and 'worst of' species.
@@chezmoi42 This is true. It's not a responsibility I'd be happy to accept. I live in France and spend a lot of time photographing mushrooms. I am yet to go out and not find a species I've not seen before. The other difficulty lay in how much they change in their short lives. With around 3000 different types in France alone, the best you can hope for is a knowledge of the ones most common to your area.
This kind of implies that other mushrooms are polite enough to let you know that they are killing you before they start doing so.

Best to get rid of them.
So that way animals and children don't eat them.

There's a rule of thumb I've heard that mushrooms that grow on lawns are usually safe but ,usually, isn't certain enough. I guess you look for oak trees in vicinity but they can attach to other tree roots. Example the Saffron milkcaps are supposedly around pine trees but I've seen them growing around tea trees ,, not the camillia tea species but the Australian tea tree . Seen the fairytale mushroom too around tea trees but often without the red and white dots but some still with dots .

I found what were later identified as 'Destroying Angel' mushrooms on a local hiking trail. They are almost as toxic as Death Caps. Kind of unsettling when you find such toxic plants in your familiar stomping grounds.
Fungi are in an entirely separate category from plants, being taxonomically slightly closer to animals. It’s easy to assume that they’re plants, though - ferns also reproduce through spores instead of seeds.
Why? Oleander is grown absolutely everywhere in CA. One leaf is enough to kill an adult
You'd be very surprised at what's around you that's toxic or poisonous. They've been there forever. It's really no big deal unless you forage or have a kid that puts whatever's growing in their mouths or animal without the self preservation instinct.
The first thing you should do when foraging is find all the poisonous look alikes, and put some time into it. I don't know how many times I've read something had no toxic look alikes or is easy to distinguish just to find out later that it wasn't the case.
Most plants have some kind of a forgiveness period, but not mushrooms. Apparently almost all mushrooms are not severely toxic but the ones that are make up for all the rest. Whereas plants have many toxic members but not many as sneaky and deadly as the few deadly mushrooms.
as was already pointed out, mushrooms are no plants. funnily enough, plants can be even more dangerous as mushrooms. every mushroom, even death caps, can be touched and licked without harm. but there are some poisonous plants that cannot be touched. the toxicity of wild plants often gets underestimated, while the dangers of mushrooms are painted in the scariest shades... it's like everything else: you have to know what you're doing. if you don't, you should not do it.

I doubt we will ever "master" space travel. The astronomical scales we are talking about are basically impossible to travel by means of modern technology and human biology. It would take hundreds of generations to get to a certain point if not thousands. Creating self sufficient space vessels that would last hundreds of generations is an incredible challenge in itself, not to mention the fact that humans are not built to survive in zero gravity. We lose eyesight after prolonged times in such an environment. Not only that but babies would be born with irreversible deformities that would probably significantly shorten their lifespan. Assuming the challenge of zero gravity is overcome, even the speed of light wouldn't be nearly enough to allow us to travel at a reasonable rate. So yeah, we are basically stuck here. That's also why we will never meet aliens.

Ana from overwatch really?
Pff, you obviously don't know of Terrance McKenna haha ;). Man was bold, wise and most certainly familiar with the specific magic of mushrooms. I have a little theory about them, I don't believe it, but I believe it possible if you know what I mean (I'm nowhere near certain of this, but consider it a viable explanation, if you do not know what I mean), and this isn't entirely my thing, but based on personal experience (I have not learned all I can from these strange creatures) and others interpretation, I think so called Magic Mushrooms might somehow temporarily plugs you into some fungal intelligence, perhaps extra galactic. Sounds pretty out there, but consider we split from fungi quite some time ago (they digest internally, we externally, that is the big difference, plus the 'farm' other organisms over their cell thick structures to give them food, shelter, and even medicines), but they were among the first things on land, and their processes, largely the release of things like oxilac acid (I might have spelt that weird, too lazy to check), into the ground broke down rocks into the first stage of what would become soil, readying the planet for plant life. So, perhaps this was some odd and ultimately random and beneficial (at least from humanities vantage point) mutation, or, perhaps there was some rough plan in place before, as I am convinced life did not start spontaneously, but was rather constructed and perhaps assumed control of (at least partially) from some force exterior, basically life pushes from the outside in, where the Will and Intelligence to manipulate the physical world come from, that I have little explanation for, its much like you must understand many scientific and mathematical concepts to properly wrap your head around physics, we don't know if life DOES push from the outside inward, and if it does, much must be uncovered before we could understand the forces shaping these things, but I do believe they exist, perhaps it is like the Russian matryoshka dolls, a never ending quest to uncover smaller and ever more complex designs, but I think there is likely 'bedrock' somewhere, some set of ultimate, incorruptible laws that govern at least this universe.

I am not an expert on mushrooms but the death cap's appearance is unmistakable. In fact, most mushrooms with bright colors (green, red) in my country are dangerous.
Generally, if people can't resist foraging for mushrooms, they should stick to one kind only.
Another tip I know is to put parsley into the dish you are making. If the leaves of the parsley turn purple or blue, it means there is a poisonous mushroom in the dish.
People need to stop saying stuff like "the death cap's appearance is unmistakable" because that's not true, and a lot of people have ended up getting poisoned because they believe it. Mushrooms don't pop out of the ground fully-formed and perfectly-colored, and a lot of different kinds look extremely-similar before the cap opens and matures. They don't always look like the photos in the books.

Two stories about mushrooms.
Around 1964, my family lived out in the country with trees and grassy fields.
An old bohemian man around 78, yes that was old back then, was sneaking around the yard, hiding behind trees, and glancing nervously towards the house.
He finally noticed my mother viewing him back through a window, then quickly left the property.
A couple of days later he came back and apologized for stealing mushrooms.
We made it clear he could come back anytime and harvest all the mushrooms he wanted.
Years later I developed and interest in foraging for mushrooms.
Knowing many mushrooms are poisonous, I purchased an identification book.
I looked at the pictures that showed various examples of one being a delicasy and another, looking similar, deadly!
I considered this as a risky proposition, BUT never the less, being brave, I ventured out to forage mushrooms,,,,,,,,,, in the grocery store.

On a thousand ways to die I remember hearing about this couple that ate the snails in their backyard. Probably one of the worst ways to die.
Thank you for the info cause I've been have mushrooms like those popping up around my maple and oak tree. First time in 20 years they've popped up here.
Well, not all chewy things are edible
For example: death cap mushrooms, your thumb, your friend's ear
Think twice
Well technically the latter two are perfectly edible. One just shouldn't, as cannibalism is frowned upon in most cultures, the second example might hurt, and your friend probably wouldn't appreciate the third.

How the heck do you dare to go into the woods in America? I would be scared a serial killer was hiding behind a tree.
Ana Mira u mean the country called united states..lol. america is a huge continent
Omg stop it. I had no energy to write two separate words for the country. Everyone gets it.
on behalf of most of sudamerica, it's pretty much the same here, you go into the woods you are pretty much gone but it depends on the zone, colombia you spotted a drug trade and killed, argentina you spotted hookers and died a result of an std, chile you go into the woods earthquake happens, rest of sudamérica probably you will die while getting robbed,so yeah good reasons to never go into the woods in america in general, and just because, you go into the woods in canada you freeze to death .
That's true, behind every tree in the forest awaits the next ted Bundy and Jeffrey dahmer.
They don't hide behind trees, they hide in plain sight.

I figured out a very long time ago that my knowledge of mushrooms will never be enough to be safe, so I don't collect them. I remember going to a natural history museum at the University of Illinois when I was in elementary school. They had a bunch of mushrooms displayed, including the death cap. Reading the information next to the display stuck with me.
thanks to the cameraman for taking this fatal risk!
I assumed the title meant the mushroom would kill you if you were in the vicinity, perhaps by releasing spores. Obviously poisonous mushrooms are bad for you.
The general consensus is do not eat any mushrooms, plants or berries you cannot positively identify.
Doesn't everyone have a cell phone so they can easily positively identify a mushroom.
Lol me too....
Casandra 1234 You underestimate how complicated identifying a mushroom can be
That may be true but I trust my friends that actually go into the forest and have picked and eaten them for many years. If they've had no problem then I am assuming it's okay to eat. They know where the safe mushrooms grow.
I got a mushroom soup ad after i finished watching

I had a 15 yr old patient in the hospital with wildly elevated liver enzymes and pancreatitis. The doctor told the girl's mom she had to be drinking a hell of a lot to get that sick. The girl swore she did not drink at all. Later she told me she did not want her mom to know she tried to eat a pretty mushroom in the woods. I told her she needed to be honest with the doctor and explain it to her parents. She was did make a full recovery over time.

Bandit B4n- Well only 2 people died from the shrooms that year.
Your a death Hazzard xD
I immediately knew that mushroom. In Poland we call it "Muchomor sromotnikowy" and it's very well known for its toxicity.
It's a symbiotic relationship, not mycorrhizal. Mycorrhizal is how mycelium grows. Relationships can be symbiotic or saprotrophic.

Mushrooms shouldn't be "stopped", people should get brighter.
Agreed.
Yet another move to prevent natural selection in humans. And people wonder why society just gets more and more idiotic. Even when people WANT to die, nobody ever lets them. We are a cruel and disgusting joke played at evolution's expense, especially when it comes to the evolution of our own species.
Well if the species is invasive (like the death cap is)
@@mrslinkydragon9910 killing organisms that are only harming humans in the name of "invasive species" is foolish and can harm an ecosystem it's helping, like these trees.
also, we're an invasive species mate. and unlike with these mushrooms, killing us would help the majority of ecosystems
@@sphenodon2016 you deserve a kick in the nuts. Invasive species are a leading cause of biodiversity loss.
I grew up in California. My mother drilled it into my head that I shouldn't pick wild mushrooms, because it often takes an expert to tell which ones are edible and which are poisonous.
Deep Look. I subscribed. Could you please make more videos about pests that attacks commodities in warehouses, silos, even domestic kitchens.
"Deathcaps killed two people in California that year". Making them as deadly as Easter peeps.
The death count is low because most people generally don't pick their own mushrooms. 9 times out of 10 if you eat a death cap you'll probably die.
No, people don't pick them up because they don't go outside
Daddy Mememaster what? I pick Morales every summer if I can.
Cars killed 347 people in cali last year. Dogs killed 5 people. And lightening struck 1 person.
Death caps don't sound so bad.
@@Argonak1 I was able to gather morels for my first time this summer. We gathered so many! I have three videos of it on my Healthy Family Variety Channel.
My wife and her friend collected shaggy parasols and cooked them. They were seriously delicious.
3 hours later I was as sick as I've ever been, and for 4 hours after that, from both ends. They were both fine though.
The shaggy parasol is notionally edible but, turns out, a highish percent of people have a reaction. I've never had an allergic reaction to anything before or after this.
I suggest anyone who wants to pick wild mushrooms goes on a foraging course first and has justifiable confidence in anything they put in their, or anyone else's mouth.
So sorry! Shaggy parasols can also be easily confused with green spored parasols (Chlorophyllum molybdites) which are indeed toxic.
Deep Look
We ate the same dish of diced and stir-fried mushrooms. I was the only one who had a reaction so I don't think I ate anything that they didn't. My wife's friend is experienced in foraging for them in fact, but didn't know that they can cause a reaction in a minority of people.
This sounds like a good idea for a CSI-like episode: a guy is critically sickened after his wife and her best friend all eat the same meal. Little do folks know that his plate had the dried residue of a poison from another mushroom, the Death Cap. The investigators find the women are more than just friends, and the wife had taken out a large insurance policy, unbeknownst to him. After his liver fails and a transplant can't be arranged in time, the man dies ...
Yeah, binge-watching a season of CSI makes me "creative" and paranoid.
Oahu Hawaii
Hmmm, my wife got me to practice my signature on the bottom of some blank printer paper, just to check that my coordination didn't deteriorate, so I know she was concerned for me. ;-)
Richard Towers: Uh-oh! You *know* she needed those signatures for the insurance policies, living will, DNR, cremation papers, etc. Time to live the life of a Grahamite, and sleep with one eye open. :-(
This is why you should only consume wild mushrooms if you are completely familiar with every type of mushroom, its appearance, and whether it is edible. Thanks for this informative video!
There's a white mushroom, usually solitary, that rises in lawns in the lower mainland of BC. It's called "the White widow" and has two paralizing pathogenic? traits. Pencil stalk, silver dollar size cam with razor edge. Very noticeable. Dogs sometimes ingest it. But I think "white widow' has something to do with Chow Mein (Mushroom chow mein).
This isn’t Mario, you don’t just eat random mushrooms you find on the ground.
