Viper's First Jet Kill - How F-16 Shot Down the First Enemy Jet

  • F-16 first took off 50 years ago, in honor of that historical event, we present this story!
    Less than a year after its introduction to Israeli service, F-16 achieved its first aerial victory. It was a Syrian helicopter shot down in April 1981. The first victory over an enemy jet had to wait for a couple of months. Amir Nachumi, a Phantom ace from the 1973 War was leading a flight of four F-16s covering A-4 Skyhawks attacking Palestine positions in Lebanon. Israeli radars detected low flying aircraft approaching their positions.

    In all fairness, ever since 1967, the Israelis have always been at least one generation more advanced than the Arabs. This made the job of the Arabs almost impossible when it came to air-to-air combat.
    There were a few pilots who didn't reasonably well against Israelis but they were non-Arabs flying for Arab air forces.

    • @showtime112
      @showtime112  4 місяці тому +3

      Perhaps not already in 1967. Israeli aircraft were comparable to Arab ones at that time (MIrage III vs MiG-21, Super Mystere vs MiG-19, Mystere vs MiG-17 etc). But in the 70s, the gap really started to open.

    • @abdulmismail
      @abdulmismail 4 місяці тому +1

      @@showtime112 Agreed. Although in '67 the aircraft were comparable, the Syrians and Egyptian pilots weren't very well trained. Compare that to the Royal Jordanian Air Force who IAF pilots said were very good.
      Also, remember that in ~1965, Captain Munir Redfa, an Iraqi Christian pilot defected to Israel with a brand new MiG-21F so for two years prior to the '67 war, IAF Mirage pilots practised against it so they knew its weakness.
      The gap has widened so much now, air-to-air is pointless against the IAF.
      Forgot to mention that I appreciate your content. They're always spot on!

We spend all of this money on the enormusly expensive aircraft, but it is the bread and butter aircraft like the F-16 and F-18 that seem to me to be the more remarkable aircraft. It isn't what might be able to do one day, it is what you do every day, and planes like the F-16 and F-18 are the workhorses of air power.

    this is the time when IAF escaped into the future, with Eagle and Viper in their service they became untouchable, the only reason I fav Nesher and Kfir over the Netz is the fact that, in those earlier time IAF was fighting on equal ground with neighbouring tech and yet winning by sheer guts and skill... with Netz and Eagle, later Sufa and Ra'am, and now their new toy 35I Adir (their own special version) it is just playing on easy setting...
