- Coalhouse Fort Occupies A Strategic Location On The North Bank Of The River Thames, Fronted By Salt-Marshes. Construction Begun In 1861 To Counter The Threat Of A French Invasion And Is One Of The Most Important Military Sites In Essex.
The strategic importance of this area was recognised as far back as 1402 when a system of earthworks was erected to defend from a possible French attack. Then in 1540, Henry VIII built a blockhouse armed with 15 cannon as part of his system of coastal defences. Henry's blockhouse is now underwater due to erosion of the river bank.
Coalhouse was just one of several coastal forts to be built or strengthened in the mid-19th century, along with nearby Shornemeade and Cliffe.
The enhancements at Coalhouse were intended to counter the threat of new iron-clad ships developed by the French navy. To deal with the iron-clad threat, Coalhouse was supplied with massive guns that could fire armour-piercing missiles. The guns were so powerful that the when they were fired, the shockwaves could break windows 1/2 mile away.
In 1865 Lt. Col. George Gordon (later to become General Gordon of Khartoum) supervised the completion of the forts along the Thames, including Coalhouse. The fort was completed in 1874. In its final configuration it held 3 9-inch shell-firing guns in an open battery, and 11-inch guns in bombproof casements. The casements were built of granite reinforced with iron, and 5 foot thick roofs of brick and concrete.
Interestingly, Coalhouse has become a popular destination for paranormal investigators; visitors have reported hearing eerie voices, and heavy footsteps following them down tunnels. Strange figures have appeared and disappeared, and objects move without anyone near them.
One spectre dubbed 'Harry' by volunteers, seems to inhabit the washroom area and has been known to throw chairs.

Enjoyed your exploration of the Coalhouse Fort, Stephen. So much strategic importance throughout the years even before it was built. Loved hearing the history and with so much history, how can there not be a few ghosts. As for us, we'll leave Harry behind and use the bathroom at the pub that must be nearby somewhere! Thanks for bringing us along.
Lol, I think I would use the bathroom at the local pub too lol 😆 a big thank you guys for the lovely comment, hope you are both well 😊😊 catch up with you wonderful guys soon 😊

Hi Stephen that was a spooky lunchtime viewing hehe 😀 It was an amazing looking fort, seems so big and in a fantastic location, great drone footage but ooo I don't think I would like to meet Harry if I visited there , I would not like to get hit by a chair ! And I also don't fancy the sound of noises and heavy footsteps and figures appearing! Thanks for much , that was great and really interesting :) ~ Anna 👍
Thank you Anna, I don’t think I would meet Harry either, he sounds like an angry spirit for sure 😊 👻 I can imagine there has been some scary moments inside that place. A big thank you for the comment and catch up soon
Very interesting fort. Never seen a design like it, and I'm happy to hear that they are restoring it.
Thank you buddy, I’m very happy they are restoring it too 😊 anything historical should be preserved as best as possible. Catch up soon buddy 😊

A very interesting place to visit and investigate. It was fascinating to hear about the paranormal activity which has been experienced there. I wouldn't like to be in the way when Harry throws a chair! Thank you for sharing these details with us, Stephen. Btw, loved the drone footage too! 🙋♀🙋♀💕
Thank you Julie and Lucy, I wouldn’t want to be in Harry’s way either lol 😂 a big thank you for the wonderful comment, and hope you girls have an awesome week 😊❤️

Cool place to see and learn about. That is an awesome looking fort. Great drone footage to put it into perspective. Creepy to hear about the unexplained things happening. Awesome architecture and stone work. Too bad about the graffiti. Thanks for the tour. Well done on your video. Have a great day.
Hi Steve, thank you buddy for the comment 😊 it’s certainly an interesting site, with a creepy piece of history too 😊😊 catch up soon
Beautiful grasslands and fort, be nice to go back at night👻I would love to scuba dive and see what is left of the fort that fell in the water👋👍
I think I would love to scuba dive in that water too, it’s probably full of cannons, ammunition and tons of artefacts too 😊 it would be a great exploration 😊 catch up soon guys and have a wonderful week
Coalhouse looks like an amazing place to visit, although the ghostly sightings sound a bit creepy. Great history video and well done on your video
Thank you buddy, sending our best and catch up soon 😊
What an amazing place. I had not come across this fort. You have shown me many places I had not heard of on your channel. I have visited Tilbury but not this fascinating fort. Yet another interesting story that you have told.
Thank you Ivor, it’s only a few miles from Tilbury, but it’s lesser known, but equally as interesting 😊 set in much better scenery too I think. I hope one day they open it to the public 😊
The round building is so architecturally beautiful. Graffiti if fortunate but such a shame to see. So much history and so enjoyed watching 😊
Thank you Cheryl, for your lovely comment 😊😊 have a wonderful week and catch up with you soon
Beautiful exploration of Coalhouse fort, great information too 👍
Thank you very kindly 😊😊❤️
What a fantastic place to explore Stephen!! Packed with tonnes upon tonnes of history. You should become a tour guide with the amount of knowledge you keep up in your noggin! Loved the background music, very atmospheric. This place feels so isolated, lonely and for some reason very sad. Enjoyed this one. Hope you're doing well 👌👍
Thank Gez, for the lovely comment buddy, the place does seem very lonely and very isolated too. I don’t think it gets many visitors but it’s an incredible location to explore.
I would have loved to venture inside, maybe I will return if they ever have any open days 😊
@@StephenandYhana definitely worth travelling to again if they do open it up. 👍
benteng yang kokoh,, lanjutkan 👍👏👍
Thank you very kindly, sending our best and catch up soon 😊
Coal house fort 🤩 I love that place. Shame you couldn’t get in, it’s amazing. Did quite a few ghost hunts there 😮 and had some very interesting events. Great video 👍🏻
Oh so excited about seeing coalhouse fort again, forgot to ask about the drone? New toy? 🤔
Hi Cara, have you been here before? Very cool and even better that you did a ghost hunt here 😊 it’s an incredible site and I loved the visit too 😊 The drone footage, Peter filmed for me, lol 😆 😊❤️
@@StephenandYhana it’s an amazing place and that was a few years ago now. But it really is a spooky place. Ok so Peter has the new toy 🤩
@@openmindedwonderer lol 😆 Peter has a new toy, he likes his tech lol 😆 I will have to look out for a ghost hunting evening there. If I see one come up, I will let you know 😊😊❤️
The German subtitles worked well, Stephan. Thank you so much I can better understand your story.
Castles and forts used to be of particular strategic importance.
It's a pity that today it's only nuclear weapons.
Thank you, pal 🤠🇩🇪👍
Peter, I totally agree with you, the strategy of war has certainly changed over the years and become a lot more devastating too.
A big thank you for the kind comment about the subtitles 😊 it’s much appreciated 😊😊 hope your having a great week and catch up soon
Hi, Stephen and Yhana. Thank you for sharing.
This beautiful image and the rich history in the background...6:02..surreal..
The drone footage really portrays the scale of Coalhouse Fort...9:54
So are there many arm forces left on the property?...10:20
Do you believe this fort is haunted? May I ask the reason why Coalhouse is not open to the public? Any danger inside the building? This place is massive! In spite of the fort, those pill boxes are tiny.. How intimidating to stay inside the small spaces!
The watch tower stands still proudly...what has it witnessed in the past?...
Very fascinating site and history. Well done. 🥰🍁Sorry for the delay in commenting. Kayak7seas and I just back from filming from the Atlantic sea...shhhh🤐...🥰🍁
Hey buddy, The watch tower was used to guard the river Thames from submarines and German boats during WW2. I believe in ghosts, there is more to this world that we don’t realise.
I think it’s closed as there are areas that are unsafe, plus they are slowly restoring the fort. I think it will cost a lot of money to complete and it’s very much of the beaten track, so it will struggle to earn a profit from tourism.
There are no armed forces left on the property.
So you have been out filming on the Atlantic 😊 very cool 😊☺️ can’t wait to see the video buddy
@@StephenandYhana I would love to see the inside of the fort someday..So much unknown history to me. Fascinating.. I may dream about being left in the tiny pillbox..😲😲
Shhhhh...we just kayaked to the 10th oldest lighthouse in the US..sheeee...🤐
Nice fort. Too bad you could not go inside. Hopefully one day they will open it up. The drone shot of the fort made us think of the layout of Ft Sumter which we had recently visited
Hi Jim and Pearl, I have heard that this fort looks very similar to the forts in the USA.
I hope they do open it soon too, it would be very cool to be able to explore inside 😊 a big thank you for the comment and for watching too 😊 sending our best and catch up soon
Wow that looked good to visit xx
It is very lovely there, nice coffee shop on site too, great for a walk with the dog too, as the area is lovely 😊😊 some spooky 👻 things happen inside that fort though xx
This is a really interesting looking fort Stephen. I really wish people wouldn’t graffiti over the walls… seems to happen so much nowadays. I enjoyed your lovely tour and it’s interesting history. We have a Fort here called Fort George…i know you like history so google it if you have time one day. They have ghosts walks here which are a fun experience. Thanks for the great tour. 👍😊🇨🇦
Oh wow, Fort George sounds very interesting 😊 A place I would love to visit for sure. Maybe one day you could do a video on it, and share it with us all 😊❤️❤️ I will definitely Google it too
Beautiful video and I really enjoyed watching it. New subscriber here from #RTBL
Thank you very kindly, sending our best and catch up soon 😊
Awesome my friend awesome
Thank you buddy, sending our best to you 😊
Such stunningly beautiful landscape and the historical buildings are just so lovely. It's mesmerizing to look at. Sad that they had to graffiti things 😢 The drone views ...wow! Just leaves me speechless there beauty of this all!
I agree, there was a huge amount of graffiti inside those gun batteries, it’s such a shame. It hopefully they will keep up the work with restoring this incredible site 😊 a big thank you for the wonderful comment and catch up soon
What an amazing place! And I loved learning all the history abut this place! What cool architecture. Beautiful landscape and drone footage too! Excellent video! This is the best way to learn. 😃💯🙌🏼
Great shots of the fort at the end, seemed like drone footage. 🧐
Lol, it was drone footage for sure. The only way I could take a sneak peak inside lol 😂
I was surprised to see the footage since I thought there was a drones prohibited sign earlier on the sign board. 😁🤖🚫
Hi Stephen. Fascinating place! Is it likely to ever be opened to visitors? From the drone shots, it looked like it needed a fair bit of restoration! Interesting video👍 All the best and take care👍😊
I think it will take many years before the place is fully restored, I hope it happens sooner then later though, as I would certainly love to explore inside 😊 Catch up soon buddy
Would be cool to walk north from the henge, waited for the washroom with thrown chairs 💺 😀 😉 nice aerials
I think it would be wonderful to walk the route of those henges too, although strangely that true north route passes just meters from my house lol 😆 I could stop home for a break lol 😆
@@StephenandYhana you can visit your family :)

Thank you Kindly buddy 😊
Shockwave reaching over half of a mile, incredible! ⚠️🦾🛡️
I thought so too, imagine how deafening it would have been standing beside it. They had no ear protection either 😕
