Hadleigh Castle - The History And Exploration Of A Thames River Ruin

- Hadleigh Castle was constructed in the 12th century by Hubert de Burgh, Earl of Kent, at a cost of considerable wealth. Hubert de Burgh served as the caretaker of Windsor and Dover Castles and, in the words of historian David Ross of Britain Express, the de facto ruler of Britain. Sad, he couldn't stay in his new castle for very long, though. I wonder why…
Oh, of course. Silly me- De Burgh was imprisoned and eventually deprived of Hadleigh Castle in 1239 after he finally lost Henry III's favour. Umm… too bad for Mr. De Burgh! However, the castle served an important economic and defensive function. In fact, Hadleigh Castle served as a symbol of De Burgh's riches and authority.
The early 13th-century Hadleigh Castle was initially recognised for its strategic value by King Edward III (who reigned in 1327 to 1377). During the Hundred Years War, it was in a prime location to serve as a base for defending the Thames Estuary against French incursions. War had broken out with France because of Edward's claim to the French throne. The king expanded and renovated Hadleigh Castle in 1360 in order to better defend the Thames estuary. During the years that the nation was free from the French, the castle had fallen into disrepair. Without this second security danger to England, it most likely would have been allowed to collapse completely into ruin.
However, before the ruin, large sums of money were spent by Edward III on a chapel, a new entryway, a tall tower, and guest quarters. Two imposing towers were added, changing the appearance of the east front. These towers had walls that were nine feet thick at the base and had six sides that were round on the interior. Both towers had three floors, and newel staircases were incorporated into the thick walls to access the top floors. There are still the spread gaps where archers could be stationed for defence. Built up against the south curtain wall, the King's Chamber housed a number of apartments, including a big hall with a solar (withdrawing room) at the southern end. The hall featured a steeply pitched roof that was made of tile, thatch, or lead. In the King's Chamber, "Plastre Parys" from London and Rayleigh glass were used. Kentish ragstone was used to construct the castle, and a mortar made largely of seashells, particularly cockleshells from Canvey Island's nearby cockle beds, was used to bind the stone together.
By 1249, a valuable tidal watermill had been constructed, which was necessary for producing bread for the castle. According to recent archaeological research, the mill was situated on a wharf that extended into the estuary just to the south-east of the castle.

A great place for blackberry picking. I've stuffed myself full of berries there a few times. The way the castle is positioned, it doesn't occur to you at first, but it's very clever. The slope is precipitous on three sides with flat, quite soggy ground facing the river. Siege weapons would be useless and due to the castle being built on a mound with a ditch all round, which I assume was man made, with the ground sloping away towards the river, any attack by infantry or cavalry alone would come unstuck. If you peer carefully over one edge where the entrance once was, you can just about see the remains of what looks like a drawbridge hinge, now much overgrown. It doesn't look much now, but in it's day it must have been quite a formidable structure.
Thank you Robert for the wonderful comment and for all of those extra bits of information, I really appreciate that 😊 I will pin this to the top of my comments, so others can use the information too. I think the whole site is very interesting with wonderful views across the Country park and off cause The Thames River below. My aunt lived on Canvey Island when I was a boy, and even then I was fascinated with castles. I used to peer across the Estuary looking at Hadleigh castle from a distance. She was kind enough to fulfil my curiosity and took me to Hadleigh for a visit. It was one of the first castles I ever visited, ruins or not, my love of history was firmly cemented. 😊
Stephen you should be a narrator on documentaries! You have such a soothing voice! Great explanations of the ruins of Thames River! This has been a beautiful history lesson! Thank you so kindly for sharing!
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment 😊😊 sending our very best guys 😊 and catch up with your awesome channel soon
What a large castle. We enjoyed hearing about the history. It is amazing that the history for this castle can be found and is documented.
Thank you Jim and Pearl, sending our best to you both and catch up soon 😊😊
Oh very historical castle and abandoned like that, but still stands right there and shows its existence. Such a beautiful video, very detailed.
This is not just a video, its a perfect documentary for people like me who are not much aware of history. Thank you for showing to the world
Thank you so much buddy, for your very kind words 😊😊 sending our best to you and catch up soon
Hi Stephen and Yhana! I enjoyed learning about the history of Hadleigh Castle and its strategic importance. It often seemed to happen that when someone built a fantastic castle for themselves they either fell out of favour or went and died! You are a natural storyteller and really bring history alive. I really enjoyed the video - thank you! 👍😊💕
Thank you Julie and Lucy, for the wonderful comment 😊😊 I can imagine this castle was impressive in its day, plus it’s high on the embankment with incredible views across the Thames Estuary 😊 anyone approaching would have caught sight of a castle that was very foreboding 😊 catch up soon
It sounds like the castle was really well built with those thick walls. It must have been pretty impressive to see! Loved that wide view with the castle and all that sky.
Thank you Donna, there is a lot to explore here, not just the castle but the whole area is a protected nature reserve. It’s very beautiful 😊 hope all well and catch up soon
Hi Stephen that was great to hear about the Salvation Army connection. My mum used to be in the Salvation Army 😃 . Great that they donated it to the English heritage and now it can be enjoyed. Its in a great area there and you say the Salvation Army farm surrounds the castle and a country park. Sounds a beautiful place to visit. Thanks for this great history tour :) 👍 ~ Anna
You have to walk past the Salvation Army area before entering the nature reserve and castle area. They still own and use a large area, it looks very well managed too 😊. Very cool about your Mum being in the Salvation Army too, that is very cool 😊😊
Hope all well with you guys, and catch up soon
Hi, Stephen and Yhana. Thank you for sharing.
Wow....It must have been an incredible view at the top...0:50, 4:14
This ruin portrays the sorrow of De Burgh..2:12.
Now I see how thick those walls are
Interesting to know shells are used to bond stones together..
Wow...the ruins and the gloomy sky tell the tragic history of the castle...9:58
Well done. Thank you for taking us along with you, two. 🙋♀🙋♀🛶🛶
Thank you guys for the wonderful comment 😊😊 I agree, there is something sorrowful about this castle and yet something very romantic too 😊 The river Thames below and a moody sky can certainly make this building stand out 😊
Enjoyed the Hadleigh Castle tour, Stephen and Yhanna. Enjoyed the history. It's somewhat sad that you can build it and then lose it just because you fall out of favor. Shame to see the erosion. Sounds like at least the Salvation Army was still able to some good works there, even though the castle itself deteriorated. Loved visiting and seeing it today. Thanks so much for bringing us along.
Thank you Dave and Kathy, for your lovely comment guys 😊😉 Yhana and I certainly enjoyed exploring this incredible site 😊
Amazing historical ruins of a castle, nice presentation and nice filming. Thank you guys for sharing historical information God bless 😍
