  • The standard Porsche 924 has excellent handling but it's never been very fast. I drive this 924 that Chris has fitted the supercharger from an R53 Mini Cooper S. It makes this a much more engaging car. The engine modifications bring this close to a turbo in terms of power and make it a really fun car to drive and a bit of a sleeper!

The irony with the 924 is it would probably be massively more appreciated and likely more valuable if it had been a VW. Can almost hear everyone saying "oh it's basically a Porsche..."

@@silverking6970 issues? Yes the whoosh noise is addictive and makes you drive like a idiot :D. Seriously, I’m on V3 of the kit and it works very well, stable and reliable over many 100s of miles. The only slight criticism is the on/off nature of the power. It’s not super smooth but it’s only a minor niggle. I’m still on the standard brake setup which is a bit weak with the SC setup. The Car Throttle UA-cam channel is modifying a 924 with the SC kit, worth a watch maybe.

I always loved the 924 body over the 944. That's why the 924S was the wolf in sheep's clothing and easy enough to upgrade to 944 spec or beyond. To me the 924 vs the 944 is like the original LP400 countach vs the countach with all the dumb flares and wings. Just a more pure design and much more slippery looking.

Mmmm I also like 924 more but dislike all the commends from the car enthusiast. (It is not a true Porsche. So you want to be a Porsche 911 owner but do'nt have the money for..) Also a big 924 fan here Jack. Bought a 924 Turbo when I was 21 back in 1994 and loved it, for 6 months anyway. Went go-karting with some friends in Croydon one Saturday, celebrated the win with a something or other and with Kiss FM having a back to 89 radio session promptly put the car into a lamppost after Crystal Palace roundabout. Gutted. Sold it for 300 quid.

I had a 1977 Porsche 924 in the period 1985-1988 and drove a little over 90,000 Km (approx. 56,000 miles) with it. The car was fantastic and transported me everywhere in Europe. I loved the driving characteristics and I loved the design. At the same time, however, a good friend of mine had a 1979 Porsche 924 Turbo (931). The engine in the 924 Turbo transformed the 924 and the model got the power it deserved. The turbo technology at that time was not the most sophisticated so there was a certain "ketchup" effect (...nothing, nothing and then all the effect at once), but the car was pretty fast and was in practice almost as fast on the Autobahn as the later 944 Turbo (951). The brakes on the 924 Turbo were the same as on the 928 S, but the brakes on the 944 Turbo came from the 928 S4. This meant that with many decelerations from high speeds, the brakes on the 924 Turbo became too hot, while the 944 Turbo did well. I think the whole 924 program had a pretty undeserved reputation for not being a real Porsche. Without 924 we would not have had 944 (which ultimately became 968). I also think the engine in the 924 was quite usable for its time. 125 HP was not bad when the model came on the market (and remember that it only weighed 1080 Kg) and it would be many years before different GTI models got significantly more. The engine was further developed and received first 170 HP, then 177 HP and finally in 1981 210 HP in the 924 Carrera GT (937). In the racing model 924 Carrera GTR (939) the engine developed a full 375 HP.

    • @Jeff_F7
      @Jeff_F7 2 роки тому +2

Don't forget that Porsche still developed the n/a engine for the 924 S (the detuned 944 engine that Porsche had to develop when VW stopped making the 2.0L blocks for the base 924 which Jack refers to in the video) that slotted below the 170 hp 924 turbo that you are referring to. It made about 148 bhp.

@@Jeff_F7 Thanks and the 924 S with a 944 engine of 2479 cm3 I am of course aware. The point, however, was what Porsche did with the original engine of the 1984 cm3 Audi/VW engine.

I used to have a 924 Turbo (you seemingly missed that out of the 924 intro at the beginning). It was great, probably the opposite of this supercharged car in that there was very little below about 3,000 rpm, but above that the boost kicked in and it got very interesting indeed. Never driven one but, always liked them. The type of thing which dosen't shout out. There are a load of cars which could be made better with a little more power, nothing crazy and this is just one example of that, the supercharger brings the pwerband changes and extra power needed. If you have a car with 750hp, don't mean it it 5x's better than somethig with 150hp. No matter the car, there are only certain speeds your going to get away with and with smaller/narrower tyres, 150hp is more than enough to get you into trouble and have fun in some cars.

Oh Yes!! I remember how my 78 924 was and how much fun it was on a slightly twisty road. I love little sports cars and honestly having too much power can ruin the pleasure of driving, at least for me. That said, a supercharged 924 sounds just as good an idea as a supercharged Mk1 Toyota MR2, and they were fantastic little cars!! By the way Jack, if you ever find a supercharged MR2 from the late 80's (87 and 88 I think) that would be a great review, short little "snikt" gear changes, the engine behind you and Toyota reliability. They were fun little cars!! Sorry back to the Porsche, If I had been offered the chance to supercharge my little 924 back in the 80's I would have jumped at the chance!! That's all it needed to be near perfect was about another 20 odd horsepower. Enough to pull up a hill with enough grunt left over to push you into your seat a bit, just that extra to carry you going into a turn on a road of twisty corners, but not enough to unexpectedly spin you off (looking at you 944 turbo and 5.0L Fox body Mustangs). What a great car!! Well done Sir, well done indeed @ Chris Madge!!

The engine is a Mercedes design originally for the DKW in 1.7 form 1st gen 100 C1 1968 when Mercedes had a Stake in DKW. Mercedes decided to sell to VAG and the basic architecture was used in Audis and VWs. Even the smaller engines golfs and polos used a similar Mercedes DNA. This includes the 5cylinders. The 1976 2.0 is a robust motor 115hp in 100 carburetor form.
Did you know in the US the AMC Gremlins had the same basic 2.0 fitted no doubt smog strangled.
Whilst not specifically designed for vans or the VW LT it was used. Its a rough sounding motor. But compared to a 2.0 pinto the camshaft lobes are wider than the Pinto cam lobes and load spread on the cam follower much better as well as oil feed. Valve adjustment is by adjustable wedge. I found a load of dealer manuals for my Audi C2 100 its the oldest in the UK.

One correction, the whining sound will be from the supercharger intake pulses, not the belt. Only gilmer belts will whine, but this car looks to have a multi-V belt driving the charger

The owner seems to know what he's talking about, no bragging, oh it's got 250 bhp, it definitely sounds like it's supercharged Jack.

I’d love to see kit cars with interesting engines, a curiosity of mine has been the 6 cylinder Triumph Rocket motorcycle engine going into small lightweight cars Minis, Spitfires and Kit Cars.

My late fathers friend bought a new 924 Turbo in the late 80's.My dad liked it an went a Porsche dealership. They had a red 924 Carrera GT for sale.Dad was talking to the salesman whilst my brother sat in a new Gold 911 3.3 Turbo.Dad bought the 911.Imagine how much a 924 Carrera GT is worth now.lol

Another good review Jack. I'm glad you mentioned about the transaxle and gear change in these cars because it just shows how a correctly designed transaxle driveline should work. The Alfa transaxle driveline by comparison is an absolute disaster. Porsche used a single conventional flywheel and clutch arrangement on the back of the crank driving a shaft through a torque tube to the transaxle. The Alfa lashup used 2 flywheels, the engine flywheel driving through a high speed (engine rpm) shaft with rubber donuts at either end with the rear flywheel containing a bellhousing and clutch! Hillman Imps used rubber donuts and they were a disaster, even with 40hp. Now imagine a shaft running at 6000rpm underneath your feet trying to transmit 160 hp, held together with donuts...! m.ua-cam.com/video/wazZTont8v8/v-deo.html. Not dangerous at all...!!!

Brilliant car- had one for 4 years. Seeing as the original Porsche was based on VW mechanicals why not do it again? Plenty of other sports car makers used off the shelf mechanics from other makers. I replaced the 924 with a couple of 911s which were brilliant, 'of course' but not good enough 'for the money' compared to a 924.

Jack, the 924 Porsche is not a car we see a lot of over here in Australia. Like all the "non rear engine" Porsches they sort of remain the "poor" relative to the more popular 911 and its close family members. But it remains a Porsche none the less and I can imagine a lot nicer driver than many other cars from it's era.

That stretch of road must be very congested. It seems as if a lot of car bloggers use it. I recognise the right hand bend with the badly patched surface in the middle and the left hand bend with the uphill after it. Do you all have coffee at Harry Metcalf’s place every day?

Do you ever have near misses with Harry Metcalfe going the other way? You could do a video series of cars destined for others that ended up being made by the consultancy or another. So 924 is one, the Elise was destined to be the MGF........next?! Nice review by the way!
