    There's actually a reason Olaf's Frozen Adventure is so long. It was originally going to be a TV special, but for some reason Disney said "Hey! Let's slap it in front of Coco to grab money and confuse even more people about the difference between Disney and Pixar!"
    Because we all know Disney is the king of cash grabs. (Just look at their marketing department!)

      @Katie Lewis To be fair every Disney movie usually gets the November release date and Moana, Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, and Tangled did well. I don’t see why they didn’t have faith in Coco to do well.

      Should've stuck with their original idea of airing it on the disney tv networks ( abc, freeform, Disney channel). But no, the higher ups at Disney are like "💰 💰 💰"

    I don’t really think they needed this “short” to promote Frozen 2. I think it feels redundant to make a short film as a pre-trailer for the highest grossing animated film of all time. Just unnecessary. I would have much rather watched an ORIGINAL PIXAR short. Sometimes I enjoy watching the new short as much as the film. Pixar shorts are consistently creative, thought provoking, funny, and clever... Olaf’s Frozen Adventure was not. Disappointed we didn’t get a new quality Pixar short:(

    • @lucylume
      @lucylume 7 років тому +14

      I agree original Pixar shorts are way better, and why are they playing a non Pixar short too begin with? Coco is a Pixar movie... Frozen is Disney... (I know they are connected but still different studios) xx

    I think they put OFA in front of Coco because they were nervous that Coco would fail. It is a kids movie about dead people. So the Disney suits thought "hey kids like frozen, let's do that to get them into the theater."
    But then Coco turned out amazing and Frozen ended up hurting them

    My biggest problem with the short was that it seemed to cram in a whole movie's worth of songs into the 22 minutes. The concept was fine. It went too long, but some of the jokes made me chuckle. But way too many songs. And, on a personal note, Elsa's much more social personality didn't click with me. I grew up with autism that went undiagnosed and I felt isolated and confined. I had a moment like her "Let It Go" moment, so the character really clicked with me. So the complete shift in her character was a bit odd for me.

    • @LordofFullmetal
      @LordofFullmetal 7 років тому +40

      See, the thing is that this change was ALWAYS going to happen with Elsa; because she's not the way she is in the first film naturally. That's not her actual personality. She is the way she is because of emotional issues caused by her parents. Once those emotional issues are solved, obviously her natural personality is going to come out. And her natural personality is apparently quite social - which makes sense, because she's a queen and HAS to be able to interact with people.
      I'm just saying, this was always coming.

    • @Formoka
      @Formoka 6 років тому +23

      LordofFullmetal You're completely right about that. All of your points make perfect sense. It just connected with *me* a little less because of it, which is not at all a requirement for the film to do.

    • @madisonbrooks8672
      @madisonbrooks8672 6 років тому +8

      Formoka YES, that's the big problem with everything that's come after Frozen. It's completely and uncomfortably out of character for Elsa to act the way she has been. The abrupt change from one of the most human Princess characters written thus far to a hollow, dressed up, always acting one certain way doll that exists to sell toys was so unnatural, it actually entered the uncanny valley for me, it's disturbing to watch. And if this is the way she acts in Frozen 2, the movie is doomed from the begining.

    • @madisonbrooks8672
      @madisonbrooks8672 6 років тому +12

      LordofFullmetal That's not true, that's not how emotional issues work. She's been that way her whole life, it will always be a part of her whether it was to begin with or not. It's not normal, natural, sensical, or well written in the slightest for Elsa to act the way she does in both Frozen shorts.

    • @intergalacticalcommiteeofp9807
      @intergalacticalcommiteeofp9807 5 років тому +14

      Emotional issues don't disappear with one 'act of true love'. It's hard and frustrating thing that takes a lot of time. Yes, love and help and care usually play a vital role, but it never is overnight. Maybe that would have been Elsa's personality if her parents didn't go 'oh, our daughter needs help controlling her powers? Let's lock her up and keep it a secret and not help her even though she'll one day be the queen!'. But they did and Elsa's new personality shouldn't go on and off like a switch.

    I needed to tell someone else my Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts Theory.
    I had just had an idea about Creedence after reading the Ilvermorny story on Pottermore. It describes twin daughters belonging to one of the last(?) American Slytherin heirs. One daughter was said to not have reproduced because she inherited the Parseltongue ability and didn't want to continue the bloodline. However, since the other sister was a Squib who married (and lived life as) a No-Maj, there's no reason to assume that if they had kids and grandkids, etc, one of those heirs might have magical abilities, or even be able to speak Parseltongue. Could Creedence possibly be a distant descendent of Slytherin (and the Ilvermorny founders)? His parents are unknown, and his Obscurial seemed to be even more powerful than others described, since he was able to survive into his teens.
    I need to look into this more, but yeah, could be a theory.

    Olaf’s Frozen Adventure was made to be a Christmas special for ABC. They only put OFA in front of Coco because Pixar didn’t have enough time to make a short for Coco and year they still showed it on ABC. The REAL reason why they pulled it early from theaters is in fact because so many people complained about it after Disney did what they could to advertise the fact that OFA was going to be in front of Coco. I knew ahead of time that OFA was to be in front of Coco and didn’t like the idea all that much and then I saw it and enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

    I went to see this with three of my nephews and one niece. After hearing you say most kids lost interest and started getting restless during the film makes me proud of their ability to sit and watch movies. We take them to see movies quite often though. I personally really enjoyed the short, and the part when Elsa and Anna realized Olaf was their Christmas tradition made me teary eyed. I thought it was sweet. I was unaware that people were getting upset about the short. I was aware that the short was playing before Coco because there was trailers, and there was a big card board Coco movie poster at the theater I go to that had "Olaf's frozen adventure" at the bottom of it saying it was playing first. I also let my niece and nephews know that it was playing before Coco. I also bought the soundtrack before I seen the movie. lol I feel like I'm alone in my opinion but that's okay. I'm sorry not everyone has enjoyed it like my family did.

    when I went to see coco on opening night (in the united states) we reserved 3D tickets about a week before. when we got to the theatre, they said the 3D wasn’t working, so i had to see coco in 2D. the theatre gave us a few free 3D tickets for any movie and they didn’t expire. when the movie began i knew there would be a short before the movie started. about halfway through the short i wasn’t sure i was in the right theatre or not, but i stuck with it and the story line just dragged on and on. the movie was supposed to start at 10:20pm and we got home at 1:45am. i loved the movie despite all of the negatives! i ended up using the free tickets to see coco again in 3D. before we went into the theatre, the ticket checkers would tell everyone that there was a 25-ish minute long short before the movie. during the previews the 3D wasn’t working again, but they fixed it right before the frozen short began. I 100000% recommend seeing Coco in 3D!!!!!!! it was completely worth the struggle

    it also had to do with cultural representation. pixar had finally made a beautiful film about hispanic culture with a (mostly) hispanic cast to top it off. years of research and detail went into this film to make it authentic to the culture, but disney didn't care about that. by putting in olaf's frozen adventure, it shows that they just wanted money, and figured putting an excruciatingly long short with an all white cast would bring people in. People were considering this cultural appropriation because they were advertising the short more than the movie. (In the US and Mexico at least). When they premiered it in Mexico, people found it offensive. Their culture was finally being represented, but all they could think about were the awful songs that came beforehand. Disney just couldn't let there be a cultural movie without something to reminding them of well... white people. It sounds like a stretch, but that was essentially what its saying. I know for sure that was one of the main reasons it stopped playing in Mexico.
    Sorry for that being really long, I hope it made sense. If anyone gets this far in the comments lmk. I'd love to have a discussion about this topic.

      I haven't seen Coco or Olaf's Frozen adventure, but I agree! I was never really interested in the white culture I was born into and was much more interested in foreign cultures and holidays, like Dia de Los Muertos (I think I spelled that right). I enjoy learning about Spanish culture and if I had to sit through Olaf's Frozen Adventure before seeing something about Latino people and a Mexican holiday I would be pretty mad even if I would've watched it with no problem on TV. (Which was how Olaf's Frozen Adventure was supposed to air anyway-as a TV special!)

    • @monetpinkett888
      @monetpinkett888 7 років тому +11

      amethyst_ cat it's not about the interest in white culture, it's more about the fact that it was so long and there was only white people in it. and like i mentioned before, the way they advertised it. I completely agree though. If it did premiere on TV, I would've definitely watched it, but having it in front of coco was just a distraction. And it's not even memorable! If you do see it, let me know what you think.

    • @LordofFullmetal
      @LordofFullmetal 7 років тому +11

      TBH, I'm not convinced it's about race. They didn't do the same thing to Moana, and Moana has an all non-white set of characters too. In fact, Imma guess they won't even do that before Black Panther (a Disney owned movie). There's little to no evidence to suggest that your theory is actually correct, and that you're not just being bitter and angry over something that really doesn't matter that much. It's not like they white washed the actual cast of the film. Why are you so angry about the race of pre-established, unrelated characters who happened to be in a short that took place before that movie? They always have a short, so what short SHOULD they have done that wouldn't have pissed you off?
      And fyi, of COURSE all of Frozen's characters are white. It's meant to be set in the Finland/Norway region, which is one of the whitest areas in the entire world. It would be ridiculously historically inaccurate to have black characters there, especially in a time period before mass travel existed. If it's wrong to white wash characters who historically should've been black, why is it ok to paint characters black who historically, definitely should not have been black?
      It's about FROZEN, not the race of the cast. Not sure if you noticed, but Frozen was the most wildly successful film they have EVER done; and they've been coasting off the popularity ever since. That's all it is, bro. They still think people are obsessed enough with Frozen to be ok with watching a twenty minute long Frozen related short before a different movie. They were wrong, because people are kinda over Frozen at this point. Anything else is just people looking too deeply into it because they want a reason to be pissed off.

      LordofFullmetal I completely understand your points. I can't take this opinion personally because I am not myself latinx. However, I am one of the few Disney fans who doesn't look for a reason to complain but rather a reason to debate. I was sharing this opinion as I've seen a lot of people express their thoughts and I thought it would be a good conversation to have. I agree, I do not think it would be appropriate to have a black person in frozen. I also don't think they should've put this in front of coco. Obviously this isn't completely about race, and I am in no way accusing Disney of something of that realm, (and I'm sorry if it sounded like I was). There was a quote by someone they interviewed and it went something like "for years we've been swallowed by your culture, for once it would be nice for you to be swallowed by ours." I thought that was an interesting thing to say, and (franchises aside) putting frozen in front of coco kind of felt off after hearing that.

      If Disney was going to make a short in front of Coco, they could’ve at least made it about a Hispanic kid or something, maybe celebrating Dia de Los Muertos, or something like that, to keep it in the same culture/theme as the movie we paid to watch. But that’s just my opinion

    I am going to watch coco today or this weekend and I just looked on the website of the cinemas in Vienna (where I live) and it actually says :COCO plus Kurzfilm „DIE EISKÖNIGIN:OLAF TAUT AUF“! Thats German for Coco plus short movie "Olafs Frozen Adventure" (by the way the german title actually means The frozen queen/ice queen: Olaf is melting/ Olaf is thawing) . And they wrote it into the content. Saying: Accompany Olaf in a winter wonderland for 20 minutes and search for the greatest holiday traditions before you watch Disney Pixars Coco.
    I am glad they wrote it on the home page, because I really want to see the short and I would have been disappointed if they didn't play it.

    I did some research, and apparently Olaf's Frozen Adventure was originally supposed to air on ABC as a holiday special, but that got cancelled, so Disney decided to cram it in front of Coco. They actually made another short called Smash and Grab that was originally supposed to be Coco's short. I don't know what they'll do with it now; they'll probably either release it for Coco when it his DVD, or save it for their next movie, which I believe is Incredibles 2.

      Stephen T I saw it airing on ABC a week ago or two, but that was after they removed it from theaters. When I saw Coco on the day it came out, I liked the Frozen short, but Coco definitely was better off without it. Disney just couldn't help but be too generous since Pixar didn't have a short of their own ready in time for Coco.

    so like yes i agree the frozen short was like a cram session where is wouldn't end and there was just song after song after song, but the literal only reason my family went to coco with me is because of the frozen short, they were hung up on the whole book of life is coco thing so they didn't want to see a "repeat" of the same movie or whatever, thankfully after they agreed with me that coco was great and the frozen short was like staring at a never ending musical for 20 minutes.

  • @maggir3598
    @maggir3598 7 років тому +10

    It wasn't mentioned here, but another big reason the short got a lot of grief here in America was because this movie was part of a diversity campaign for Latinx in a place where (despite having a large Latinx population) we weren't really seen on screen like this. For a lot of people (including myself) it felt disheartening that with a film that was supposed to showcase my racial and ethnic diversity, they had a 22 minute short beforehand without any minority characters. I remember sitting in the theater surrounded by all these other Latinx families there for the same reason I was--to see my culture and my people represented for these kids; a huge move forward in a country where Latinx-Americans such as myself are viewed as second-class citizens--and being frustrated that we couldn't even have this one film for us. They still had to slap on an overtly long short, featuring their highest profiting (white) character cast. It almost felt like they were worried a story with a diverse main cast set in a less-Westernized culture would flop without Frozen there to save it. This kid next to me was so sad, like legitimately sad, and asked (in Spanish) where Coco was. It was the weirdest thing to have a short like that which was supposed to be funny, and to have so few of the children there laugh at the jokes. Kids usually laugh at everything that's even remotely funny, but these kids didn't. Disney let them down. I'm glad those who see it now can truly enjoy Coco without the short beforehand now, even if the decision was made for purely economic reasons. It deserves to stand on its own.

    • @LordofFullmetal
      @LordofFullmetal 7 років тому +1

      This short wasn't even meant to go with this movie though. It was a random tv featurette that they chucked in front of a different movie. I don't understand why people are upset about a totally unrelated short which is set in a totally different area with pre-established characters not having minority characters - and believe me, I KNOW what it feels like to be a minority. I'm a bisexual woman. You think you're marginalised? Most people don't even believe bisexuality EXISTS.
      They didn't do this with Moana, which also features a completely non-white cast. The simple truth is that there's NO evidence any concerns about race are legitimate in this particular situation. Disney has SHOWN recently that they have zero problem banking on diverse films being successful. This is far from their first diverse film at this point, and they've never done this before - so any concerns you have come out sounding like you think your group is for some reason more marginalised than any other. It's probably not, let's be real. There's simply no evidence that this was a racially motivated action. You're taking a coincidence and making it a bigger deal than it is. Would you be this upset if they'd done a Moana short that was twenty two minutes long? I mean, it's still a different race to your own. Or are you literally just reacting this way because it's considered ok in modern society to trash white people without an actual reason?
      It is FAR more likely that this simply has to do with the fact that Frozen is the number one most successful movie Disney has EVER done, than it is that it's a racial thing. Trust me, they're throwing Frozen into EVERYTHING. Not just this one movie.

I was wondering if our entire club (of 28 people!) was in the wrong place, and I know Pixar shorts exist before every movie. When we walked in and it was starting, I figured it was a short. I just kept getting more confused until finally I decided that we were in the right theater (we took up 2 whole rows and no one tried to take our seats) and this was just one really long short. But it just kept dragging on and on. And I don’t even like frozen! AT ALL! No offense if you do, but I came to see Coco, a movie about Día de los muertos. Not frozen 2. So it was definitely a good idea to remove it from theaters, but I wish they had another short to replace it since I really like them.

    I really agree with you. The "short" wasn't so horrible in my opinion, but it definitely wasn't great. I knew about the "short" before going and was already laughing my way to the movie theatre like, "HA! A 20 minute SHORT!"
    What's sad is that I liked Frozen. The characters were great, the story was good- it's a good movie.
    But the "short?" It made some of the characters feel really off. Olaf was the major one- they did a fantastic job of keeping him funny and cute in Frozen. A character like him is very hard to pull off as lovable, but Disney did it. But in the "short?" He managed to start annoying even me, someone who finds it very difficult to be annoyed by 'cutesy' stuff. Olaf just seemed...really ditzy. Sure, he's supposed to be played that way for comedic effect, which also happened in the original movie. However, in the "short", his mentality just came off as dumb.
    Some of the other characters were like this, too. Mostly, I think it was Kristoff and Sven- their dynamic didn't feel right and their comedic effect was jacked wayyy up.
    To sum up this overlong analyzation, I didn't care too much for the "short." I absolutely LOVED Coco! :D
    (Don't mind the edits; I'm a grammar freak xD)

Did you also get mad that the fairy godmother isn't explained in Cinderella? That the witch isn't explained in Brave? That Mother Gothel and her powers aren't explained properly in Tangled? NO magic in Disney is ever properly explained, because that would make it not feel like magic anymore.

    I loved the short! I thought it was very cinematic and had great music. I loved Coco and went to see it again yesterday because they were supposed to still be playing the short but it didn't play and I was so upset! Coco was absolutely amazing though!

    My theater had a sign that said "Short film plays before Coco" so I knew.

    I have seen every Pixar film in theatres, (barely, I'm 22 and saw Toy Story when I was a baby, but still, every one in theatres) and am always super excited for my Pixar short before the film. My boyfriend isn't big on seeing films in theatres, and had only seen a couple Pixar films, but I had convinced him to see Coco with me because I really wanted to see it, and I wanted him to come with me.
    But Olaf came on the screen when my Pixar short came on the screen. He had no idea what was going on, and didn't even know the characters, as he hasn't seen Frozen. (And thought I've explained it to him, he doesn't think it sounds interesting.) I however, was fuming because I could only remember being 19 and living with my 9 year old cousin back when Frozen came out, and being super into it so we could connect, but completely hating it now.
    And the fact that this short felt like it would never end.
    We did end up liking Coco (and I can say it's the 4th Pixar film I have cried in, the others being Wall-E, Up, and Toy Story 3), but we weren't thrilled about the short, and were pleased to later hear it was being pulled from theatres.

    If you notice the resolution on the film. It's playing on a widescreen, which is meant for television. And you know where this short was going to originally play, ON TV

    It was 22 minutes long because that’s the standard running time for a half hour tv show in the U.S. And it was pulled after eleven days because Disney, who owns ABC, ran it in the States as a holiday special on tv. Sorry if someone else has already said this.

    Omg, finally! I was soooo confused when I was at the cinema and they started showing this Frozen thingie. And it JUST. WOULDN'T. END. I legitimately thought that they had put in the wrong movie and was about to go and tell one of the employees, when FINALLY, this HORRIBLE experience ended....

    I bought a ticket for Olaf's Frozen Adventure, and I knew Coco was playing next, but Frozen never played and I was disappointed
