This unit runs on Atari's COJAG hardware which is similar to the Jaguar but replaces the supervisor processor with a MIPS R3000, and has a hard disk and 8 megabytes of RAM. Area 51 and Maximum Force were the only two games released on COJAG hardware.
To answer your question about the gun colors, yes the left gun is usually red and the right gun is usually blue. The gun colors on this particular cabinet (both green) is the default for Maximum Force.
I remember first discovering this game at a skating rink in Lockport back in 1997. I wouldn't be able to play this lovely gem until 1998 when I was at a Regal Movie Theater after seeing a movie. Of course when I played the Windows port on my dad's laptop before then, that was when I learned that shooting innocents (like the STAAR people in this game) costs you a life. I remember in 1999 when my mom and I were at a movie theater, it was minutes before our movie began, so my mom and I decided to kill some time playing Area 51 in the game room. Ah, memories.
I play this at a bowling alley near my area as a kid it was great but for a long time I forgot about the name till recently and my mom didn't let me play m-rated games though I didn't know it was m-rated till I found out but the game over was in my head for years
If you choose "Beginning" and shoot only the first three STAAR team members and nothing else, you will unlock Kronn Hunter mode, where you play as an alien. On the original Area 51 and not the one on Area 51/Maximum Force Duo, your vision will be changed so that the backgrounds appear mostly blue and purple. Here's a video of it in action if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/TESz-OtCsE4/v-deo.html
This has been one of my favorite arcade games as a kid growing up. I tried the PlayStation version of this and didn't like it as much as the good ol' arcade platform of it. I personally hated the aliens where they throw barrels and grenades and s*** at you.
Wish I knew a place close to me to buy one here in Tennessee. All I see are out of state and for one I don't know what to expect ordering something this big and having it shipped. That or they require local pickup only. Price wise I can afford it from what I see around $4000 but my wallet will take a hit of course. The problem right now is no room where I live for it and the whole shipping issue. Oh well I have the PS1 version but not as fun without a light gun. Yes I know PS1 has light guns but I don't even have a CRT TV to use them since they won't work on modern HDTVs. That's another space issue though as I want a good CRT TV as well for older game systems like PS1 and PS2. Nothing beats the arcade cabinet version of this game but cheaper alternative would be to get a CRT TV and PS1 light gun. I have nostalgia of both ways playing this game as we use to rent the game at a video store back in the 90's and we had the PS1 light gun to use. Still out of anything gaming collecting wise I want one arcade cabinet in my house and it has to be Area 51 for sure. One thing I remember is like mentioned at 6:52 the one we use to play had a red gun and blue gun not the green ones here. I always wanted blue gun as blue was my favorite color. The arcade cabinet I want has to have those color guns. I would like to get more of an original version I guess it would be that doesn't have the other game on it as well. The Arcade cabinet version I always had to play it when we were at Walmart years ago. Sorry for anyone reading this long rambling comment. Oh and anyone know where to find a poster of the Stars girl on the cabine?
+Luffymon88 We have a business that we buy and sell arcade games, so it's not our personal collection, just all of our inventory for sale. We started small and kept growing... eventually we ended up with hundreds of games!
remembered playing this in arcades
It mighta been this same one :)
a really fun game. I used to have this in my collection. highly recommended
+moomert1 Absolutely... a real 'modern day classic' !
@@LyonsArcade ICE Johnny Nero Action Hero video.

I freaking loved this game when I was a kid.
Are you going to go storm Area 51 next month? I would but I'm afraid of the CIA, LOL
@@LyonsArcade Nah, I have other plans that don't involve getting shot.
Me too!
i remember getting to play this exact machine at a local restaurant my parents and i would go to
i love this game, played it loads in the arcade then bought it on ps1. Great video
Thanks Graeme, it's a great game, always will be!
I remember playing this at pizza hut lol. Good times and alot of fun.
Nice job with the vid. I loved this in the arcade and got it on ps1. It's playable but nothing beats that awesome arcade atmosphere for sure
Yeah it was always hard to recreate the shooters and the drivers on the home systems....
Bringing back memories 😁😁 #VRArcade

Thank you Matthew!
You're welcome! BTW I saw your Maximum Force video and noticed the guns were red and blue on that cabinet.
Why isn't this video getting a million views today?
The CIA is probably removing it from UA-cam's algorithm, you're lucky you found it :)
This game is definitely on my wish list
We just sold one of them earlier today :)

Very cool man I love hearing about stuff like that!
back in the day my brother and I found an area 51 cabinet unlocked... we played free all fucking night it was glorious
Between this, Doom and GoldenEye. This is what got me into shooters
Three classics! Thanks for watching Christian!
awesome cabinet
No need for correction. This game came out in 1995. I am now 30 years old and still play it. Did I mentioned I owe an arcade of it myself.
+elmexiyankee It's really popular, we always sell every one we get in quickly (including this particular one) !
Ugh ! Where do you guys buy them ? This was my favorite childhood game :(
I remember playing Area 51 in Kissimmee Fl at Villas at Island Club Britannia Blvd
My local Pizza Hut back in the '90s had this. Good times. I think the printing method is called dot matrix.
This game was a monster, they had them everywhere!
Our pizza hut had it too! That's crazy.

i remember playing this. wasn't it fun to get to shoot out windows as well as the aliens?
Yeah, at the time that was some new stuff, LOL.
Carnevil and Area 51 were so badass
Yup, very well designed!
UnCreative Deconstructionism CarnEvil’s ending is also amazing!
Dude’s thoughts: “Encountered strange monsters, cool set pieces, saved some people, tested reaction times, enjoyed killing.”
*Token appears again*
“OwO, what’s this?!”
*inserts coin again, Umlaut’s eyes open and it laughs*
Betty: *scream of terror*
Dude: “Their blood will pay me!”

That's really cool, crazy that they put so much hidden stuff in these!
great video!!! i loved this game growing up. they had it at a local movie theater. it was so much fun! :D
it's one of the best for sure!
My local theater in Idaho ( i moved a few months ago) still has it in their lobby.
I played this with my mom at an arcade today and she was really bad at it but it was fun lol
just added this game to my PSX collection
We don't get the Playstation version in very often!
@@LyonsArcade id love to have that cabinet. along with some lucky and wild
Lucky And Wild was awesome! I had a couple out on location they were very fun.
And I’ll just say she definitely looks like she’s ready for business lmaoooo. Bro I’m going to buy this.

Stay tuned man, this Friday we've got a cool video you'll appreciate coming up :)
enjoyed playing it when I was just very young, just got scared of the game over screen, still scares me to this very day
It was very well done, very cool game!

She has two grenades ready lol
+adidas1984x Yowsa!
This will help us raid area 51
I'm not going with yall to Area 51 man, i'm afraid the CIA is going to shoot us all when we get there.
nice cabinet.what is the name of this machine right side from area51?looking good:)
+fors4halla That red one is just a generic Golden Tee kit... the cabinet itself was a Mortal Kombat at one point!
I play it at the palce
Very cool game!
who else put it on 2 player so you could dual wield?
That’s kind of cheating but not really if you paid lol
How do you make all of your money to buy all of these arcade games?

Simple.. He buys them cheap, fixes them up abit and then sales them for quite a bit more.
Pink fire
Ron it came out 96
Arcade original is the best, the PS2 remake sucked
